How To Wear A Classic Jumpsuit

Image

A classic black jumpsuit is timeless. It doesn’t matter if you’re a girl who prefers vintage style or if you’re a girl who wants to wear what’s in the now, black jumpsuits are flattering on almost everyone even plus sizes. We have an idea that jumpsuits or jumpers are a “one size fits all” kind of universal basic piece, but they’re not: they have different cuts, different styles, and can be worn with different accessories to bring out different elements. Here is one thing that is universal, however: they make everyone look great.

Step 1: Look at How the Celebs Do It

The best way to decide how to wear a classic black jumpsuit is by taking a look at those who have gone before you. Because the classic black jumpsuit is both timeless and contemporary, there have been plenty of celebrities who have recently worn a black jumpsuit on the red carpet. Some celebrities may match their jumpsuit with a clutch and black heels, others may take a simple route with black boots, and others may take an even simpler route with very minimized jewelry. Consider a few different looks before you jump in.

Step 2: Decide on a Jumpsuit

There are several different kinds and cuts of black jumpsuits. Bloomingdale’s sells the Aqua Jumpsuit that has white spaghetti straps and wide legs. For a more casual look, Asos sells a short-sleeved jumpsuit with skinny legs. For a night out, Guess has a black jumpsuit with a halter keyhole top, a gold belt, and wide legs. If you want a black jumpsuit that you can dress up or dress down, a pleated jumpsuit from Alice and Olivia is sleeveless with a high neck and wide legs. Don’t buy the first black jumpsuit you find: take a look at the different offerings first.

Step 3: Coordinate Your Look

Once you decide on a jumpsuit, decide on the look you want. If you’re wearing a jumpsuit to work, adding a blazer might be a fantastic idea. If you were to select a blazer from, say, Nordstrom’s, be sure to select the right shoes from Heels.com to go with it. You want to be sure you’re coordinating the exact look you want, either by repeating the black and white element as in the example, or coordinating an animal print with a red blazer. If you’re going for a more casual look, try a pair of gladiator sandals like these Steve Maddens and a wide-brimmed hat. Don’t underestimate the coordination of gold, animal prints, and pops of color.

Step 4: Inside vs. Outside

As you’re coordinating, be aware of where you plan on going that day. An inside look could stay pretty simple with a great pair of heels and a great bag, whereas an outside look may require more. If you’re going out and it may be breezy, be sure to select a cropped cardigan like this one from Fossil. If you’re spending a lot of time in the sun, be sure to wear a pair of chic sunglasses, particularly a pair of mirrored aviators like these from Carrera.
