Hair Care Tips

Hair Care

While growing up, I had healthy, thick long hair (I am hairy remember), and thankfully I have passed the hairy gene to my kids. However, over the years, my healthy hair began to thin out, and I lost a good chunk of it. In fact, my hair is usually buried under some hair extensions, braids, or wig, so I don’t have to deal with it.

I did not pay attention to my hair care when I was younger, and I am living with the result of my neglect. If I could turn back the hands of time, I would pay special attention to my hair, but since I can’t, I will do what I can do now, which is, shower the little hair I have on my head and my daughter’s beautiful long  kinky hair, with extra love and care.

There is nothing as beautiful as healthy hair, so if you have it, you better take care of it. Many people would do anything to have a second chance to take care of their hair. Just ask the people at Hayley Street Hair Clinic – the leading hair replacement specialist, renowned for pioneering the adoption of high quality follicular unit extraction technology (FUE) in the UK. Many people are willingly to spend good money to have a full head of hair. The hair transplant cost page provides more information on how much people spend to have their hair back.

If you have gone through the website, I guess you won’t need anymore convincing on how important it is to take good care of your hair while you can. Here are some hair care tips you may find useful:

Washing your Hair

Now this tip is more for black women because majority of us tend to have hair extensions or braids on.

Try not to wash your hair too frequently if you can get away with it. I aim to wash my daughter’s hair twice a month, in between I have her hair in plaits. I also aim to wash my hair twice a month. Listen to your hair, if it looks dry, you are probably washing your hair too often.

Also, while washing, make sure you are using the right shampoo ad conditioner for your hair. I usually start off with a hair shampoo, then I leave my conditioner in for about 30 minutes, then wash off.

Oil your Hair Religiously

I oil my hair and my daughter’s hair every two days. The weather, the sun and pollution could damage your hair, so try to apply a moisturising hair oil, cream or spray to protect it. Oiling the hair regularly nourishes the hair, which makes your hair look healthy, and shiny.

Use the Right Curling Iron

There are so many types of curling irons in the market today, many perform similarly, but meant for different hair types, so make sure you have the right curling iron for your hair type. I have very thick hair, so I use a ceramic flat-iron hair straightener and a ceramic curling wand to get the curls out, and it works perfectly.

Protective Styles

I noticed my hair breaks a lot when I just have it out in the open, so I usually have my natural hair in a protective style, usually a weave underneath the whole glam you see. That way, I can be rest assured that the ends of my hair are nicely tucked in, and protected from the elements.

So there you have it, my hair care tips. What do you think? How do you take care of your natural hair?

  1. My hair is in really bad condition, which is due to bleaching and heat damage. I’m always on the lookout for good hair care products. Thanks for sharing, theres some great tips here x

  2. I need to start oiling my hair as I have very brittle and dry ends! I didn’t know you were supposed to do it as regularly as every 2 days though! Thanks for the tips 🙂

  3. Being a tad older than you, my generation of the 70’s as a teen, there wasn’t as much advice about as now. I am fortunate to have a good head of hair. Since the youngsters have grown (though I always had a regular 6 weekly trims when they were young as I had learnt they were important) I have spent alot more money on my hair as it is my crowning glory.

If my hair isn’t right nothing else matters. You could put me in the most classiest designer outfit make up etc. and it wouldn’t be right without my hair right. I wouldn’t but I would rather wear no make up out than go out without my hair right. No chance.

My hair regime is to wash every 2 days. I use Joico hair products (my hairdressers sells and uses) When I have shampooed and conditioned I wrap a towel wrap round my head with the conditioner still in and leave it on whilst I am showering and wash it off afterwards. The warmth helps the conditioner soak in. Once a week on pamper hours I use a Joico hair treatment and leave it on for 20 minutes wrapped in a head towel.

I also use a heat protector, good quality hairdryer GHD’s and take care of my brushes. I go to the hairdressers 4 weekly for a regular trim as my hair grows really quickly and there is alot of it. I also do this because I have my hair coloured (twice a year I change the colour) every 8 weeks to keep on top of the smattering dreaded greys that have that started seeping through. I dont and never will do grey. Growing older disgraceful yeah.

BTW I am a Leo and our manes are very important ! Thank you for the article I really enjoyed reading it. Hair is a biggie for me.

  4. Wow. Very good tips on hair care.Washing twice a month is very good but having weave on on disturb adherence. I just must look for a way out of this. Anyway thanks for sharing.

  5. My hair has thinned out a lot over the years as well, I’m tempted to get extensions to try and protect my hair a little more – thanks for sharing x
