I keep getting comments about how high some of my shoes are, and how I manage to walk in them, so this post is a long time coming….
Most woman wants to achieve that confident, sexy and elegant look. What better way to make this happen than by wearing high heels! A beautiful pair of high heels always adds that touch of class to every outfit – even a simple pair of jeans and a t-shirt, like the Fashion & Style Police t-shirt, for example.
However, having a pair of great-looking heels is not enough, you need to know how to walk in them. Knowing exactly how to walk in them is the key to achieving that bold feminine strut. So, I’m going to give you some tips on how you can walk in heels and unleash that confident, sexy and elegant woman.
Start off comfortable
If you’re not used to walking in heels or it’s your first time walking in them, don’t jump into stilettos straight away. Start with short 1 inch chunky heels. Chunky heels will give you more surface space to walk on. That’s why wedges are the easiest to walk in. Once you’ve gotten used to the feel of walking in them, graduate to kitten heels. Kitten heels have short but slender heels. From there, you can move up to 2-3 inch heels, then 4-5 inches. Usually, the taller you are, the more uncomfortable you are wearing higher heels. A rule of thumb is when you notice your knees bending at a particular height of heels, drop an inch lower.
Focus on the 2 Ps
Posture and poise are the things you must pay attention to while walking in heels. These are what will bring that feminine elegance to the fore and prevent any pain that may arise from bad posture.
Stand straight. Ensure your spine is long but relaxed. Your shoulders should be wide and not slouching. Tense your abs, slightly raise your chin and make sure you are looking straight ahead.
Never bring your chest forward in the name of standing straight and don’t push your bum backward. That will look unnatural and hurt your posture.
Aim for a smooth landing
Now it’s time to take your first step. Maintain your straight posture. Put your best foot forward right in front of the other foot and repeat with the other foot as if you are walking on an imaginary straight line. This will give you that famous catwalk.
As you are landing on your feet, make sure you land heel first then gradually distribute your weight to your toes. This will prevent exerting too much pressure on the balls of your feet. At first you may have the temptation of walking on the tips of your toes but avoid doing so. Walking on tip-toes will make your toes sore and cause your knees to bend and that won’t look classy at all.
Work your hips
Remember Shakira’s hit song “Hips Don’t Lie”? She was right!
Allow your hips to lead your legs. Moving your hips forward will control your whole leg starting from thighs down to the rest of your leg as you land on your heel and distribute your weight to your toes. Focusing on the movement of your hip, keep your kegs straight. Your legs must never be bent while walking. Working on that hip movement gives you that sexy side-to-side strut showing off your curves.
Move with the rhythm
Usually, walking in heels will make you walk in short strides, making you walk slower than in other shoes. So, you will take more steps than usual.
As you get used to walking in your heels, you will notice a nice rhythm forming. Be conscious of that rhythm and let your whole body follow it. Feel free to gently sway your arms from side to side. This will make you look more graceful as you walk.
Practice, Practice, Practice
Practice makes perfect! No one was born a natural when it comes to walking in heels. It takes steady practice. Practice walking in your heels at home. Try walking on different surfaces to get used to how it feels, but always make sure you take breaks from time to time to ensure you rest your feet.
I hope you find these tips useful. Do you have any tips to share? Drop me a comment, lets chat.

I could follow these tips and still end up falling over. I just have the worst balance haha
Lol..
I wish I could, but I have flat feet and find heels just so uncomfortable x
I know someone who has flat feet too. She struggles as well xo
Great advice, thank you. I think my days in heels are limited due to the curve in my spine, but I love them for special occasions!
Yea they are great for looking all glam x
I think it’s all about practice. Start low and aim higher 🙂
Exactly. Thanks for stopping by x
Great advice!
Glad you found it useful x
I’ve never been good at wearing heels and don’t think I’m all that bothered really. I am not a girlie girl so am happy in flats x
Your happiness is all that matters x
I unfortunately can’t wear big heels like that anymore. i have health issues that have ensured that. I have bought an expensive pair of shoes for my eldest son wedding in August with a small heel and will remember some of those tips for it. I am sure I will be ready to kick them off before the day end though. Great tips though Stella
I am always happy to take my heels off after a busy day. It is the best feeling in the world..
sadly i have arthritis in my feet and any attempt at wearing heels causes agonising pain :0(
Oh heels are a no-no then. Sorry to hear that x
I don’t know why but I find it more comfortable to wear heels then flats for some reason. I love wearing heels!
Me too xo
FOr me, it is still heels any day and anytime. Your tips are great.
XO
I trust you (wink wink)..
I’ve never been good with heels and prefer to wear flats when i do decide to wear heels I prefer wedges.
Wedges are very comfy.
Your pictures are super funky. I love wearing heels, I am so short, they always make me look better and more confident. Great advice! X
Thanks Helen x
This is a really good guide. Practice makes perfect. You can tell when someone has the walk down!
Yea you can. Thanks Liz x
Haha you have no idea how much I needed this post! I can’t walk in heels at all, wish I could!
Glad you found this post useful x
I love wearing a good heel, I just don’t get the chance to wear them that much. I’m away on holiday next week so I am looking forward to cracking out the heels x
Ah nice. Have a good holiday xo
Not worn high heels in a while, I need to re-train myself. Nice tips
Thanks Anosa x
I can only wear wedges and I am not really confident to wear heels. I have to take every tip listed here. Hehe
Wedges are comfy so that is a good way to start if you want x
I probably won’t be in heels for a long time but I shall keep these tips in mind as I am hopeless walking in heels
I was once hopeless too. I had to learn x
I love heels! I think being short it is in my DNA to love and be able to walk in them ha
Lol..I love my heels too.
I once wore huge heels. I was dressed as Baby Spice at Halloween. It must have been 1998ish or thereabouts. I looked awesome but walked like a newly born giraffe. This guide would have helped.
Oh my, lol..
Great tips, I have found since having children I can no longer walk in heels as my balance is all off xx
Yea I struggled to get back into the game after having my kids x
I have got so lazy about wearing heels that I need to learn again. Currently I stick my bum out and waddle.
Lol..I know that walk..
I love heels, purely because I’m a shortie, but I always find it difficult to find the right pair. You definitely have to make sure you can walk in them before buying.
Yea true that x
I can do kitten heels and chunky wedges, but not stilettoes! Would just fall over 😀
I know what you mean. I use to be like that too..
I gave up walking in heels a long time ago. I wish I hadn’t in a way as there is no going back once you get out of the habit
Yea it can be hard to get back into the swing of it.
oh gosh, I haven’t walked in heels for a while, I’m afraid I forgotten how to walk in them lol. Something I promised myself this year was to transition to walking in normal heels compared to wedges! I can rock( even run) in the highest of wedges but I cant walk in heels lol. Love your pictures too xx
Thanks Sarah xo
