I looked back at some of my old outfit photos some days ago, and I was amazed at how much my personal style has changed for the better. I can never dream of wearing some of the outfits I wore happily back then. It just confirms how our personal tastes and style keeps changing. I am sure 5 years from now, I won’t dream of dressing the way I dress now. I think age and where we are at in life plays a major role in how we dress up. As long as we keep growing, our personal style will keep changing, hopefully for the better.
Here are a 3 ways of adding a personal touch to your personal style:
Use the KISS Principle
For those who do no know, KISS stands for Keep It Simple Stupid..Ha. I learnt that from my Finance tutor at the university. I always try to make all my outfits look effortless. Like I didn’t over think the pieces I choose. Also, I try not to over-accessorise because it usually ruins the look. The Style Icon – Bridget Sojourner, is one of the few women that can look good rocking so many accessories at the same time. To get maximum impact, stick with 2 key items at a time.
Focus on the Positives
Use the power of accessories to draw attention to certain parts of your body you like. So if you have huge boobs, put on a long necklace, if you have a small waist, put on waist belt to show it off.
Shop your Closet
Before you go all out to shop new pieces and accessories, take a good look at what you already have. I enjoy shopping my closet and I do it a lot. Shopping your closet basically means you styling your pieces differently. So matching pieces you haven’t matched before with accessories you haven’t matched before. This way you get more wear out of your pieces, and new matched outfit would feel and look new. It is a mind game. For example, the Jack Wills dress I have above is paired with a Tommy Hilfiger Trainers and a Guess Bag. For a different look, I can pair the same dress with a pair of black/brown flats or sandals, and a different handbag to give a completely different look.
Ignore Trends
Ignore trends COMPLETELY. Only shop for pieces and accessories that suit your personal style. Do not be forced into outfits that do not look good on you because everyone is wearing it. What looks good on Celebrity Star A may look hideous on you. Do not be deceived.

Love this post! Amazing idea:)
Glad you do x
I definitely agree that it’s important to pick outfits you like yourself and feel comfortable and confident in, rather than just following trends 🙂

Yea it is Jess xo
I totally agree, I am not one to follow the trends if they do not suit.
True that.
I’m not sure I have a personal style, but mine would be mostly about comfort. I’m mostly in jeans and since it is summer right now, I’m always in sandals too 🙂
Yea comfort should come first Dean x
I was looking at my first blog posts a few days ago too. I can’t believe some things I loved and wore but hate now. I have made mistakes by buying the in trends but not looking good on me before..Now I go for first impression thoughts and comfort 🙂
Spot on Claire..
I like your ‘don’t follow trends’ approach. Just my kind of style. 🙂
Yea x
Great tips. I certainly think positivity can have a massive effect on our styling and the way we look. Not just focusing on our good physical bits, but positivity in the mind too. Tx
Yea true that.
Love this, what great tips, I never really know where to begin so I will definitely keep these in mind when putting together an outfit next time!
Cool Sarah.
Totally agree – if the look of the moment doesn’t suit you, pass it by!
Yea true that.
I was smiling as I was reading your blog on this: when my youngsters were young, young I was pretty much jeans and t-shirt gal. That was much the staple for Mom’s 80’s/90’s. As they grew up, are now adults over the years after leaving the ex I started to develop my own style.
Yes like you I see how it has changed over the years. The elements are still there, however the skirts are a little longer now and the like.
I have also grown into loving dresses too. Something I hated once. I will wear them now during the day. I think fashion has evolved so much that your able to find your own style/trend with comfort too.
I too like to wardrobe shop & style. Great tips. Thank you for the article. Fab as always
