Why you shouldn’t wear makeup everyday

For most women, putting on makeup is a daily routine. Although makeup can enhance your beauty and make you feel more confident about yourself, it can negatively affect your skin. You may not see it now but as years go by, your skin goes on a gradual decline as it loses its health and vigor.

If you’re the type of person who uses makeup everyday, knowing what exactly makeup can do to your skin can help you prevent your skin from being damaged and your overall system from being harmed. Here are some reasons why you should take a leaf from Alicia Keys’ book, and ease up on your makeup usage. Trust me your skin will thank you for it.

  1. Clogged pores

This is the most common problem faced by women. Applying layers of makeup everyday can clog your pores. When your pores are clogged, your pores do not get the chance to breathe. Clogged pores are the number one cause of acne as grime and dirt from the makeup block the pores. This is what causes pimples to start forming on your skin. The pimples are pores that were infected and got inflamed. Pimples cause dark spots and destroy the overall look of your face.

  1. Chemicals get absorbed in your skin

Most makeup contain a lot of chemicals. These chemicals can be extremely harmful to your skin and your body. As you apply makeup on your face, your skin absorbs those harmful chemicals into your bloodstream. As you keep applying makeup, it creates a buildup of those chemicals in your system. Some of the chemicals found in makeup are sodium benzoate, propylene glycol, parabens and carcinogens.

  1. Applying makeup everyday may cause some parts of your face to wear away

Constant use of makeup will start thinning down sensitive parts of your face. For example, regular use of mascara can cause your eyelashes to thin down and break even though mascara is expected to make your eyelashes look longer and more pronounced. The reason why this happens is because of the type of chemicals contained in the mascara. In order for the mascara to be more effective, the level of those harmful chemicals is enhanced and this causes negative effects on your lashes.

  1. May cause you severe allergies

We all have different skin types and different kinds of makeup affects us in different ways. Prolonged use of makeup could cause your skin to grow sensitive and you may end up with a rash with each application of makeup. When not checked, this rash will get red and inflamed which will cause more harm to your skin. What causes the allergic reaction is the level of harmful chemicals contained in that particular makeup brand. The more you use it, the more your allergies will aggravate.

Now I am not saying you should not wear makeup. That will be hypocritical because I do wear makeup a few times a week, and I would have worn it everyday if I had an office to go to but since I work from home, I can’t be bothered to look glam half the time. What I am saying is make sure you wear your makeup safely and give your face a day or 2 each week to breathe without makeup. Also make sure you wipe every trace off and moisturised properly before going to bed, no matter how tired you are.

Thanks for reading and have a fab day wherever you are.

  1. I never wear make up everyday because removing it is what causes me issues. Make up remover makes my face dry no matter the type or brand! I keep make up for special occasions and nights out!

  2. This is a great post, I would not have thought of this. I only wear make up when I go out or shopping when I want to look nice. Not very often though. It does make you feel more confident.

  3. Good post, the ‘in’ thing now is to look like Kim K, i.e. contoured to buggery but that comes as a price as it takes a lot of make up shovelling and I’d be interested to know if those peeps actually wash their make up of. Of course a lot of them do, but I know a few gals who like to wake up with their make up…tsigh…I mos def dont wear makeup every day ( :

  4. I think it’s just a matter of personal choice really. I wear make up every day because I would look ill if I didn’t. But it’s my choice and I don’t feel under any pressure either way, and neither do I judge people who don’t wear make up. Peace and love, sisters!

  5. As I’ve got older, I wear make up less often. I used to put it on every single day, but now, I just don’t feel the need – I’ve even been known to out without any on! I do love make up though…

  6. I must admit I do wear make up every day apart from weekends unless I go out. I don’t tend to wear heavy make up or heavy foundation and definitely would not have the time or patience to contour or have the perfect make up every day.. but I must say it does give me confidence and I don’t think I could go out of the house with a totally bare face.. This is a great and informative piece, thank you for sharing!

  7. I don’t wear make up at home. Only when I go out. You must cleanse and have a good skincare regime if your going to wear it regularly I think. Great post Stella

  8. I’m definitely no one to be wearing makeup every day. Your skin definitely needs a break and your pores need time to breathe. Good point too, about all of the chemicals that are absorbed when we wear makeup.

  9. I never wear make up unless I’m going out OUT, I much prefer to let my skin breathe and look natural so that when I do make the effort and go out, I really feel as though I have made an effort!

  10. I do once in a while take a break from wearing make up but this tends to be on days that I stay at home. I like to let my skin have a rest so also when I get a chance I remove my makeup as early in the day as possible.

  11. Definitely agree with this and speaking from first hand experience. As a teenager I was so bad that didnt take my mascara off at all and developed a cyst under my eye lid which had to be surgically removed. It’s not nice so everybody … please take your makeup off and don’t wear it often.

  12. I don’t wear make up every day either. I find when I wear make up my pours get blocked and I end up with spots! Not good. Great post and great tips! xx

  17. I think wearing makeup everyday is fine but it’s really important to care for your skin, so properly cleansing it and moisturizing are extremely important (I mean even if you are not wearing makeup everyday it’s still important to properly cleanse and what not)
