16 things I would tell my 16 year old self

Being a teenager can be so hard. You feel no one really understands you, and sometimes it can get out of control for many. Luckily I was a responsible teenager. I didn’t get a lot of trouble and had great grades all through high school. I got my GCSEs a year earlier than my peers, and had the opportunity to go to university at the age of 16. Actually I went in few months to my 16th birthday.

I was quite young but very intelligent and street smart for my age. So I handled university quite well.

I read posts like this a lot on other blogs and I like them because they make you reflect and think deep. I would love to sit 16-year-old self down, and tell her a lot of things but these 16 things are the top on the list.

  1. Know your worth, and don’t settle for anything less than what you want.
  2. Shine bright like a diamond, never let anyone dull your shine.
  3. Be yourself. Everyone else is taken.
  4. Embrace your strengths and your weaknesses. They make you who you are.
  5. Focus on your studies, so your grades don’t drop.
  6. Go for a university degree you have an interest in.
  7. Have a bit of fun. You are young only once.
  8. Take care of your skin. Drink more glasses of water and don’t sleep with your makeup on.
  9. Pay attention to your hair care. Stop wearing hair styles that destroy your hair-line, and get rid of the relaxers that break your hair.
  10. Learn how to drive, so your 30-year-old self doesn’t have to worry.
  11. Pay more attention to your skills and improve them.
  12. Get rid of toxic relationships/friendships. They are not needed.
  13. Don’t be afraid to stand out from the crowd.
  14. Start a blog.
  15. You know the difference between right and wrong, always stick with the right.
  16. Relax, everything would be fine in the end.

  1. Wow well done for your achievements in going to uni early/ getting your exams done early too. I wish I could tell myself to not let anyone come before your family and although not to plan everything do think to the future because it will come around quick enough x

  2. Great post! I think I would tell my 16 year old self all of these as well. And also not to be so quick to grow up, when you’re a teen you think your parents don’t know what their talking about and you just can’t wait to be 18-21 or older so you can move out and be on your own. I’d tell my self that being an adult isn’t all it’s cracked up to be so get ready, enjoy being a teen cause life is gonna get REAL! Lol

  3. I do love these posts – I often think that I can migrate my brain into my kids’ heads so they make the right decisions and always try their best, but we have to let fate take its course don’t we? 😉

  4. Gosh – so many things I’d tell myself I wouldn’t know where to start listing them! This is a great list.

  5. What a positive post and how amazing that you go to do all that at such a young age (and do it successfully). I am not sure what I would tell my 16 year old self. I certainly didn’t have your confidence and was very naive! I think I would tell her that it is okay to make mistakes and not to take any notice of what other people think or say!

  6. What a lovely post Stella. You are so right. I would tell myself to be more confident. I was always shy but being shy made loose out on lots of fun things with not having the confidence to go get them..

  7. I would tell her ”Gal you are going to have to go through alot of sh*t to find out who you really are and to get to peace and happiness”

Having had a messed up childhood which meant I was dysfunctional anyway at 16 cos of, it’s kind of hard to think of anything else I could tell her. It’s been 1 hell of a roller coaster.

  8. Beautiful tips. You have said it all. Will just adopt these wonderful tips for my grandchildren lol. Love your blog – very educative.

  9. I’d tell myself all of these… Especially about the toxic relationships and friendships and I’d certainly take better care of my skin. Great post! xx

  10. This is such a great post! I also started writing a letter to my teenage self and it was so emotional for me! We just don’t know what it’s all about do we? Thanks for sharing
