How to Care for your Accessories

Without a doubt, accessories form an essential part of any outfit. They not only complement what we wear, but can also give our outfit that ‘WOW’ factor if used correctly.

As important as accessories are in fashion and style, very few people actually take good care of their accessories. Many times we just chuck our earrings in the jewelry box until the next outing, or hide our watches in their drawers.

If accessories are so important in creating great looks, then we should be taking care of them a bit more. Not taking care of our accessories can make them start looking old, lose their shine or start changing colour. Most times, neglected accessories are prone to getting damaged quickly no matter how high quality they may be.

If you have not been taking care of your accessories, then here are some tips that you can start applying straightaway.

  1. Keep your accessories dry at all times

Ever noticed some of your jewelry change colour after a while? That happens when your accessories, especially the ones made out of metals like bras, copper and bronze get in contact with water and start to oxidize.

When your accessories come in contact with sweat, perfume or chemicals in your cream, the elements in your accessories start to react with those substances. This is the main cause of your accessories changing colour over time.

The best way to go about this is to ensure that you use your cream or perfume before you put on your accessories and not after you put them on. This will give those substances a chance to dry before they get in contact with your accessories.

Also once you feel yourself sweating, gently damp your sweat off so that it does not get to your accessories.

  1. Clean your accessories after using them

Since there are some elements that may react with your accessories when you are out and about, you will need to wipe your accessories before you store them away. Wipe your accessories with a soft cloth to ensure that no water, perfume or cream is lodged in corners of your accessories.

Make sure that you are thorough as even a little bit of cream hidden on the surface of your accessories could cause quite some damage over time. For example, nothing is as vulnerable as the watch you wear on a daily basis. If you want your watch to last longer, take time to wipe your watch before you keep it away for the day.

  1. Store your accessories in the appropriate place

Do you leave your accessories lying around after using them? Keeping your accessories out in the open exposes them to elements that could destroy your accessories. Some of your accessories like chain necklaces or long beaded earrings could get tangled or even get broken.

To prevent this from happening, make sure that you have a special box or compartment where you can keep your accessories. This will provide the perfect environment for your accessories to be stored as it will be kept in a dark cool place that will be far away from anything that could damage your accessories. Another example is a padded jewelry box will protect your delicate jewelry from being scratched.

These small actions can do wonders for the life of your and your accessories will thank you for this.

  3. I have a costume jewellery stand in the shape of a small template shop window model with different shape hooks on to keep my jewellery on. It’s really good as it keeps them untangled.

My special expensive jewellery is in a jewellery case which was my late Moms. Good post Stella and very important

  4. I have to say I don’t really do anything to care for my accessories at the moment, I know I probably should to keep them at their best but it’s hard to find the time! Or remember to think about it even!
