Moissanite vs. Diamonds: Which is Right for Your Ring?

There is a nothing quite like the look and feel of a real diamond. It has long been one of the most cherished stones in human history. Owning a diamond is like a rite of passage for many men and women. It is something to be proud of and enjoyed, forever. There are few other materials that last as long as a diamond will last. But what happens when you want the look and feel of a diamond, but can’t really afford to take on that kind of expense? Comparing Moissanite vs. diamond rings will help you decide if it is worth investing in a real diamond, or choose the more economical Moissanite.

The Look

At first glance, you may not be able to tell the difference between a Moissanite stone and a real diamond. Once you know what to look for, it can be quite easy to spot the difference. But if the look of diamonds is more important than having actual diamonds, the Moissanite might be for you. Moissanite appears to have a much shinier sparkle to it; sometimes it can appear exaggerated in certain lights, especially if the stones are quite large. If you are opting for a Moissanite stone instead of a diamond, consider using a smaller amount in your ring so the difference is less noticeable.

The Strength

While diamonds are the hardest materials used in creating jewelry, their rarity and composition make them much more expensive than the trending Moissanite. Because Moissanite is a manufactured material, the cost of the gemstone is much less than a real diamond. In considering the everyday wearability of a diamond and Moissanite, they are quite close in durability. There’s only a .75 measurable difference on the Mohs Scale of Hardness (which is used to determine strength in gemstones and diamonds). So Moissanite is a close second to diamonds.

The Cost

Obviously, a diamond-look-a-like is going to cost much less than a real diamond, however, Moissanite is not just a look-a-like. Real Moissanite is also quite rare and can be just as expensive as real diamonds. Thankfully manufactured Moissanite is about 30% less than real diamonds. That is a significant savings when it comes time to purchase your engagement and wedding jewellery. Consider using a smaller sized Moissanite gemstone to reduce the visible differences between the look-a-like and the real thing. Only you will know for sure.

Perhaps you want to save money on diamonds to be able to pay for a custom ring instead: you can get the look of the diamond ring you are dreaming of without the cost associated with a real diamond. 1. I personally want a Moissanite ring. Now that they have colorless, opting for a cheaper lab-created gemstone that looks almost identical to a diamond and nearly has the same hardness seems like a no-brainer to me!

  2. Anche io non ho mai sentito parlare di Moissanite, e comunque se mai dovessi comperarne uno, penso che ne vorrò uno vero, magari di tg piccola, ma vero 🙂 🙂 🙂 xò xò

  3. What a great post Stella. I am embarrassed to admit but I’ve never heard of Moissanite before so I found it extremely interesting to read. I guess it would depend on the price and overall design of the ring. But I actually prefer emeralds 🙂

  4. I haven’t heard of moissanite before. If it is that similar then I would definitely consider buying it instead of diamonds (I’m on the look out for some stud earrings…)

  5. Great post Stella! I must say I am actually scared to own a diamond ring or anything. I like emeralds and topaz but I haven’t heard about moissanite before.

    Anita,
