Does Fashion Empower Women

Fashion means a whole lot of things to different people. For some, it means a means of expression. For others, it’s a way to feel good about themselves. Then there are others who see fashion as a movement.

Seeing fashion as way to empower yourself as a woman is something that is most times overlooked by a lot of women. No matter how fashion conscious they might seem, very few women are aware about the type of power fashion delivers. It’s all up to you to be conscious of it and steer it in the direction that will help you grow as a woman.

But can fashion really empower women? I did a bit of research and soul-searching as I’m also into fashion and this is what I got:

Fashion makes you feel confident about yourself

There’s no doubt that looking good makes you feel great about yourself. And when you’re confident, you are able to do things in life fearlessly. For a woman, fashion empowers her to be able to come out of her shell. Fashion gives you that sense of security that you will be respected and heard because people usually address us the way we are dressed. Also, the boost of confidence fashion gives makes a woman feel unstoppable.

Fashion is a good avenue to make a living

Some of the women who venture into fashion industry have been extremely successful. Fashion is a lucrative business and there are so many angles from which you can start a career. From fashion blogging to fashion designing, or a being a personal stylist to sharing and selling courses or training, the options are endless, and the sky is only the beginning.

Being able to create a sustainable living from something that interests you is empowering as it gives you a sense of control over your life. You feel that you are able to support yourself and your family. You also define your income which empowers you to do greater things in life.

Fashion gives you the opportunity to share your message and make an impact

Fashion is expression. It’s a means of telling a story about society. While watching fashion shows on TV, I love listening to the behind-the-scenes interview with fashion designers. I observed that whenever they talk about their collection, there was usually a story behind it and a message they wanted to put out in the world.

Charity shows and fund raisers have been a great way women have impacted society through fashion. Their art through fashion has been an inspiration to several other upcoming designers, who look up to them for the motivation to pursue their dreams.

So does fashion inspire women? Absolutely! It’s all about being able to take fashion leverage on its power to give you the confidence to be yourself, the economic power to live the life of freedom and the ability to share your message and be an inspiration to others.

  14. I never used to second guess myself with what I wore until an ex made me so self conscious that even to this day 4 years later I still struggle.

    It can be such a confidence boost getting it right but also so hard when you don’t x

  15. Absolutely the truth! There are days when I feel I can do anything, other days I just want to melt into the wallpaper. No matter the day, I dress for the occasion. My clothing definitely reflect and affect the way I feel. 🙂

  18. It’s true, looking good can make you feel good. However…. “fashion” is a set of arbitrarily-decided-upon ideals. Society puts an incredible amount of pressure on women to spend money on clothes just to make themselves fit the ever-changing idea of “beauty” that society has constructed. And for the vast majority of women who don’t naturally fit this vision of beauty, it can be really harmful and a real struggle. If a woman looks terrible in the latest fashion trend, because of her body shape, but everyone around her is wearing/buying it, is it really going to empower her? Or will it lower her self-confidence? And make her try to spend more money and time trying to look like everyone else? A woman’s confidence should never, EVER come from the clothes on her body. That’s what’s wrong with society… we’re teaching young girls to get their confidence from looking like how society wants them to look.

  19. I believe fashion definitely empowers women, especially when it’s true to self. People get it twisted because they mix up fashion with the fashion industry, that’s terrible. One is self-expression the other is capitalism

  35. I agree, style is a way to express yourself and finding that perfect item of clothing or shoes is a great way to make women feel more confident. And a confident woman can handle anything! I also love the fashion and makeup blog and YouTube community because it’s creating a mindset among women that is inspiring each other and being encouraging and spreading self love #Queens love your post ❤

  36. I definitely think that fashion empowers women. I saw some of the other comments said that they can’t stand it when people say women dress for men (I hate it when people say that too!). It is so important that we dress for ourselves and dress to make us feel better and more confident.

    I agreed to a lot of the points you wrote about here. I do absolutely believe that fashion is an extension of yourself, of who you already are.

    It is sad when some people criticize how one dresses. I think dressing the way you want is a great freedom.

    Freedom is a basic right, and it starts from self accepting yourself.

  65. I really like this post, very thought provoking. It is true fashion does have that ability to make a living. This is one reason campaigning for a living wage in factories making most of our clothes is so important, this wealth should always be shared 🙂 This is what I am hoping for xx
