OOTD: Calling the Shots

The title of this post is inspired by the name of the lipstick I am wearing – Rimmel London Call the Shots. I have been incredibly busy these last couple of days, dealing with new clients and life in general. I almost didn’t have the take these outfit photos, but I was determined to find the time, against all odds. I believe when you want something so badly, you find the time for it. No room for excuses this year. I am calling the shots in my life!

Spring is here, and I am loving the sunshine we are getting. It is still more rain than sun, but I can’t complain. I made good use of the amazing weather by getting these photos taken. I hope the sunshine stays.

Every piece I have on is an “oldie but goldie”.  I got this black floral dress last year summer, and I have worn it a few times now. It is dead comfy and so easy to style; one of my current favourites. The brown faux leather jacket is also from last season’s collection, and so are the brown boots. If you are a regular reader, you would spot the black bag and sunnies, I have had them for donkey years, and they still look good.

This is the reason why I like to buy quality items. The more you spend on an item, the longer you have it, that is usually the case with me, especially when it comes to accessories – shoes, bags, jewellery and sunglasses. And that is the reason why I like to invest a little more in them, so they serve me for longer.

I also like to sell my old accessories on eBay, and bags do sell quite well on eBay.

Christmas Money Saving Fashion Tips

This festive season is all about spending, which leaves most of us very broke in January. With the Christmas parties and celebrations going on, we all tend to spend a little bit extra buying sparkly outfits and accessories for the many occasions we have lined up. I keep getting invites to events all over the country, so I can imagine many fashion bloggers are receiving many event invites as well.

It is very easy to get carried away with the party season and drain the bank account in the pursuit of looking stylish. The good news is you don’t have to. You can look stylish and not spend all the money you have.

Here are some money-saving fashion tips you may find useful –

Will it be worn

Research has shown, we only wear 10% of our entire wardrobe. Is that true at your end? I won’t say it is true at mine but I do have my favourite pieces I wear regularly. So before I buy anything new, I ask myself if it would be worn and how often it would be worn. My answer determines if I buy it or not.

Have a budget

Having a clear figure of what I am prepared to spend on a shopping spree leaves no room for over spending. I always have a budget in my head, and I write it down if I have to. That way I can shop smartly and happily, knowing when to stop. Withdrawing the exact amount of money needed also works, leaving no room for me to go over my set budget.

Worth per wear

When it comes to buying high-end, I like to go high-end (or as high as my bank balance allows me) on footwear, bags, jackets and jewellery. And get reasonably priced pieces for the rest of my wardrobe because I look at worth per wear when deciding on how much to spend on an item.

Sell

I sell many of my pricey preloved items on eBay and I make a small fortune on them. If you look around your wardrobe, I am sure you will find something worth listing, so have a dig around.

Look out for the sales

I am always on the lookout for bargains, so I do most of my shopping in the sales. I hardly buy anything full price these days.

Fashion and the Environment

Fashion Tips Image

The older I get, the more I start to think about the environment, and how to consume less energy. Back in the days, I use to just go with the flow, but I am happy to say I am now wiser, and I now think twice about how my fashion choices affect the environment. The ethical fashion way is the way to go. Here are 3 ways I consider the environment, as far as fashion life is concerned:

I wash at 30 degrees

I wash all our clothes at 30 degrees. Washing at 30 degrees saves 40% of energy, and my clothes come out looking clean and fresh, so it is a win-win for me. Plus, my clothes last longer when I wash with no so hot water. This greener option is good for my wardrobe, wallet and the environment.

No tumble drying

I was at  party the other day, having a conversation with some ladies, and 1 of them complained about not being allowed to use a tumble dryer, while holidaying at a friend’s place, and I realised so many people still tumble dry their clothing, and I think it is so crazy. Apart from the fact that a tumble dryer consumes a lot of energy, it damages clothes most of the time – they shrink and look funny. The sun and wind do a far better job at drying your clothes, or you could just pop the damp clothes on a rail indoors, with a window open and leave it for a few hours.

I honestly cannot remember the last time I used a tumble dryer. I have lost far too many clothes using that. A long spin and popping the damp clothes on a rail does the job for me most of the time.

Give back

I donate my old clothes and accessories to charities quite regularly. I try to do a clear out at the end of each season, so I decide on what to keep for the next season, and what to give away. I also sell fairly used clothes and accessories on eBay. It is my own way of giving back to those in need and saving the environment. Speaking of eBay, I haven’t had the time to list anything on the website, and I have many things that need to be sold. I am hoping to get back into it when I get less busy.

These are some of the ways I consider the environment when it comes to my fashion life. What are your thoughts? Do you do any of these?
