How to style an outfit for special occasions

When it comes to special occasions like weddings and birthdays, you have to make sure you get your outfit right. The last thing you want is to go over dressed and annoy the celebrant or go under dressed and looks scruffy. Here are some fashion and style tips you may find useful when styling an outfit for a special occasion.

Stick to the dress code

Always ensure you find out what the dress code is before styling your outfit. You don’t want to wear a pair of jeans or a denim skirt to a black tie event. Make sure you also check for colour codes just incase. The key to dressing to special occasions is to look smart and decent. That usually works. You can find lots of inspiration on Pinterest.

Don’t upstage the celebrant

Like I previously mentioned, upstaging the bride/celebrant won’t do you any favours so make sure you don’t go over dressed. Stick to the dress code and colour codes, and ensure you don’t wear any over the top clothing or accessories. You don’t want the attention on you on the celebrant’s special day. For example, don’t wear a white dress to a wedding unless it is a background colour to a pattern.

Dress in tune with the seasons

Pay attention to the seasonal shades of fashion and style your outfit in those shades in mind. For example, dark berry colours mixed with blacks and greys go well in the winter season. So you could opt for a berry dress (ensure colours are in line with the dress codes if any) with black accessories.

Have a stylish cover up at the ready

Wearing a strapless dress is all well and good until it gets chilly. Have a stylish cover up at the ready will be a life saver. So make sure you have one.

Get a winter coat

If you are attending the event in winter, ensure you have a good statement coat ready. You don’t want to hide your stunning outfit under an ugly coat. Go for a lovely striking coat in a block colour that suits your outfit.

The right heels

You should opt for shoes/sandals that go well with your outfit and the event. It is more stylish to wear a dress with a pair of heels rather than flats, but go for the right type of heel for you. You need to be able to walk properly in them and feel comfortable.

What are your thoughts? Which do you pay attention to the most when it comes to styling an outfit for special occasions?
