Charity of the month – Dream Catchers Dance Nigeria

To start off 2020 properly, let me introduce you all to my charity of the month. This month, the charity I am supporting is Dream Catchers Dance Nigeria. I have been following this charity for months now after finding their Instagram page by chance thanks to P Diddy’s feed. He shared a clip of some of the children dancing to a track and I was super impressed. The amazing dance moves of the cute kids caught my attention and have had it since. The lady behind this charity – Seyi Oluyole, is doing a fantastic job getting the kids off the streets and providing for them. She created Dream Catchers Dance Nigeria in 2014 to help street kids and children from low-income families get an education.

Poverty in Nigeria

In Nigeria, many children have to go without basic stuff everyday, education being one of them. Around  10.5 million children, between the ages of 5 and 14 years, are not in school. And only 61% between the ages of 6 and 11 years regularly attend primary school. These stats are disheartening, which is why I am glad there is a charity like Dream Catchers Dance helping the education invest in their future. This amazing team are doing a lot to help the children, getting them off the streets, giving them a home and keeping them busy with dance.

I read Oluyole’s story on the Aljazeera website and I was blown away to discover how far Seyi Oluyole has cone with the kids and how they got to where they are now. Here is a brief quote from the interview –

“Millions of children are out of school, poverty levels are high, and thousands loiter in the streets,” she says. “Addressing these challenges take really a lot of time – with our work we’re doing our own bit, and hopefully with more funding and support we can scale it to reach much more children even though that doesn’t necessarily reach everybody.”
