We all go through periods in our life where we meet or work with people that we find difficult to get on with. You’re never going to impress or be friends with everyone, but it can be hard for you to manage to deal with someone that you don’t get on with. So here are some tips on dealing with a bad boss.

Find The Reason Why They’re Unpleasant

There are some people that just enjoy being an unpleasant person, and if you find out that this is the case in terms of your boss, you may want to think about speaking to someone who could help tackle this or finding a new job. Learning from your past experiences is important, and you want to make sure that you avoid any future bad bosses during other points in your career. However, not every bad boss has the intention to be unpleasant.

There might be a reason as to why they treat you with distaste or have an attitude to anyone they deal with when it comes to the workplace. It’s a good idea for you to figure out what this might be because there might be a chance that you can work around this and help your bad boss becomes a good one. Of course, it’s not your responsibility to change this authoritative figure into someone who is nice to others, but if no one else is listening or doing anything about it, you can always attempt to sort out the problem yourself.

 

Don’t Let It Affect Your Mental Wellbeing

Your mental wellbeing and general health should always come first whether that’s in your work or in your personal one. When you’re dealing with someone who might constantly be picking you out to emotionally and verbally attack, or if they’re just putting you on edge, that’s not healthy. There should never be a time where you dread going into work. As much as we can rely on money to keep us going in life, that’s not the be-all and end all to living.

There are plenty of jobs available out there, and if you find that your mental health is taking a knock, it’s very important to put yourself first and either ask for it to change or leave. It’s good to fight your corner of course when it comes to possibly removing that person from the organization, but your health is certainly not worth sacrificing for some role that you can find elsewhere.

 

Speak To Someone

There may be a possibility where you can speak to someone, like the HR manager or a person within the business who has more overall authority than your boss. Any accusation of someone abusing their role or being a bully should always be flagged officially. If you ever find yourself in a vulnerable situation and where you’re not being supported by the company, you can always seek the help of employment solicitors. Never be afraid to speak up, no matter how little support you have. Voicing your concerns at least takes it from hearsay and rumours to something concrete and where action can be taken.

 

Identify The Triggers

With any boss, there’s going to be certain things that might rub them up the wrong way, and although you might not mean to do it, it happens. So think about all those scenarios where there’s been an unpleasant occasion and find out what the trigger was. If it’s something you couldn’t help, then it’s not up to you to try and fix it. Although, if there’s something that can be done or you have the opportunity to avoid it, then why not give it a go?

 

Act As The Leader

For some bosses, they might not be present at the most important times, and when there’s a lack of leadership in your team or for yourself, someone needs to take charge. If your position and other team allow it, having you as a back-up leader, might be just what you need. There might be times where your boss is trying to undermine you or question your decisions. In this case, you need to stand your ground and have confidence in yourself. Never let anyone make you feel unworthy of being in a role. Show them what you’re worth, and that could be what makes them turn into more of a pleasant leader.

 

Dealing with a bad boss is difficult, and it’s nothing you would want to wish on anyone else. So use these tips on dealing with a bad boss as best you can to improve the situation.

      • It is. It affected my entire life inside and outside the office. Having to be cooperative and enthusiastic and have a positive attitude all day long while getting yelled at, demoralized and basically abused is completely exhausting. I’d come home after work and collapse. Night after night we’d eat takeout food. I neglected my son. I had no energy for friends. Sometimes I’d skip my shower just so I could spend 5 more minutes in bed. You can imagine my, grumpy and stinky, rolling into work the next morning! It was just a terrible experience. Five years.
