5 Things to Consider When Buying a Bag

*Collaborative post.

That’s a great bag—is so much more than just an accessory. It’s your daily sidekick, a style statement, and sometimes even your portable home. Anyone who is always on the go knows how important it is to have everything you need in your bag. From your receipts to your snacks, to even an extra change of clothes, your bag needs to be your all-in-one go-to place.

However, as most people know, bags are hardly cheap—especially if you’re buying a reputable brand. Make the wrong choice, and you could not only find yourself with buyer’s remorse, but you could even end up with holes in your bag. To help you, here are some of the most important tips to keep in mind when purchasing a new bag.

Function Over Flashiness

We get it—that fabulous tiny sequin clutch may be stunning, but is it really going to suit your lifestyle? Will it really hold your phone, wallet, keys, and whatever else you want to squeeze in there?

Before you get swept away by how something looks, ask yourself what you need. Is it simply a going-out bag? Or is it something you’re going to use every day for work, travel, and errands? If a bag can’t comfortably carry what you need to carry in it, then it’s probably not the right one for you—no matter how cute it may be.

Materials

The materials that your bag is made of are going to make a big difference in its overall durability. Look for sturdy zippers, reinforced stitching, and ideally, quality leather. You don’t want to worry about your bag having to be replaced every few months—or even once a year.

A good bag should last several years, even up to a decade. A general rule of thumb is: if it feels flimsy when you first buy it, then it’s probably only going to get worse. Choose something that feels sturdy and will stand the test of time.

Versatility

Unless you have the budget to buy several different bags for each outfit you wear, chances are you probably want something that is versatile and will go with many different looks. Stick to a neutral or classic color that will work with a wide variety of outfits.

A neon bag or something patterned may be cute on its own, but when you try to pair it with an outfit, it may look downright gaudy. Instead, choose something that’s neutral and versatile, and you’re much less likely to experience buyer’s remorse.

While you’re at it, consider buying a bag that can be worn in several different ways. Something that can be worn as a crossbody or handheld will give you even more value for your purchase.

5 Biggest Mistakes People Make When Buying Clothing

*Collaborative post.

Shopping for clothes should be fun, but let’s be real—it’s easy to end up with a closet full of “meh” purchases that don’t quite do the trick. Maybe it was an impulse buy, maybe it doesn’t fit right, or maybe it just doesn’t match anything else you own. Sound familiar? To help you avoid buyer’s remorse, here are five of the biggest mistakes people make when buying clothing (and most importantly, how to avoid them!)

Not Considering Your Lifestyle

That sparkly dress might be fabulous, but if your daily routine consists of school runs and work-from-home days, will you realistically wear it? Are you going to have time to take it to be dry cleaned? Before buying anything, ask yourself, does this actually suit my lifestyle? Prioritizing practical pieces that align with your daily activities will save you from owning a wardrobe full of “maybe someday” outfits.

Ignoring Fit and Buying the Wrong Size

We’ve all done it—buying something too small as “motivation” to lose weight or grabbing a size too big because it’s “cozy.” But the reality is, if it doesn’t fit you properly right now, chances are, you won’t wear it. Clothes are supposed to make you feel comfortable and confident, so always go for a fit that flatters your current shape, not your “maybe someday” size.

Getting Swayed by Sales

A 70% off tag is tempting, but if you wouldn’t buy it at full price, do you really need it? A good deal isn’t actually a deal if it just sits in your closet gathering dust. Instead of shopping based on discounts, focus on pieces you genuinely love and will actually wear.  Even if that means you pay a little more

Following Trends Blindly

Trends come and go— that’s why your personal style should always come first. Buying something just because it’s trendy (but doesn’t suit you) most of the time leads to regret. If you genuinely enjoy a certain trend, go for it!  But don’t bother giving in to a style that doesn’t suit you simply because it’s “trending.” Instead of chasing every new fad, invest in timeless pieces that compliment your style and body type.  This won’t just make you feel more confident, but you’ll avoid looking back at photos of yourself and asking “what was I thinking???”

Forgetting to Check the Fabric and Quality

It looks cute, but will it hold up after a few washes? Fabric quality matters! Always check the label to see what a piece is made of.  You want to choose natural fibers like cotton, wool, and silk as these tend to last longer than synthetic materials. Also, inspect the stitching and seams. If it already looks worn in the store, imagine how it’ll hold up after a few wears!
