According to the American Bar Association, there are currently 1,328,692 attorneys in the United States. This allows room for a wide diversity in experience and attorney fees.

When you are trying to determine “how much do lawyers cost?” be aware that the amount of attorney fees you pay depends on the details of the case and the type of case you have. Here is an overview of attorney fees in the United States that shows the different billing methods attorneys use.

Hourly Rates

On a national average attorney fees run $100 to $600 per hour. Rates for a new attorney or one located in a small town are more likely to be in the lower range. An attorney with years of experience, a high success rate winning at trial, or in a large metropolitan area will likely have higher rates.

Flat Fees

Some attorneys bill on a flat fee basis. The attorney estimates the amount of time it will take to resolve your case and will charge you one flat fee rather than billing on an hourly basis.

To your advantage, if the case takes longer than the attorney estimates, get more than you paid for. If the case takes less time than the attorney estimates, the attorney makes a better profit.

Contingency Fees

In a contingency fee, the attorney only collects a fee if they win your case. The normal contingency rate is 33.3% of the award. This fee is common for lawsuits such as personal injury and workman’s comp. The attorney fees, expenses, and liens are paid first, and then the client receives the remaining funds.

Overview of Total Charges

In addition to the attorney fees you pay your lawyer for appearing in court, your billing may reflect additional items including;

  • Court filing fees
  • Travel time to court
  • Phone conversations with you or others pertaining to your case
  • Court appearances
  • Time spend conducting research
  • Time spent drafting complaints, motions, depositions, and correspondence
  • Reviewing discovery, correspondence, emails from you, opposing counsel, or anyone else pertaining to your case
  • Office expenses such as copy expenses, the printing of evidence photos, process server fees, etc.

If your lawyer has a legal assistant or paralegal performing work on your case, your bill may reflect those services at a lower rate.

Retainer Fee

This is an up-front payment you make to retain the attorney’s services. The attorney then holds this money in an IOLTA account and withdraws money as they earn it while working on your case. Your monthly billing statements will show the work the attorney has done and the balance remaining on your retainer.

Consultation Fee

A large majority of attorneys offer free consultations. They look over your paperwork, advise you on what they can do, and quote you a price to retain their services. There are some attorneys that charge for consultation appointments.

When scheduling a consultation appointment, inquire as to whether or not there is a fee and how much time you will have to meet with the attorney. One of the qualities to look for on how an attorney will handle your case is the courtesy and professionalism of their staff on the phone.

How Much Do Lawyers Cost?

Answering the question “how much do lawyers cost?” is difficult because every case is different. Each type of case and attorney preference combine to determine the billing method. The best course of action is to schedule a consultation with an attorney to discuss your case.

They will advise you on the billing method for your case. If you decide to hire them will have you sign an attorney fee agreement. Make sure you understand your financial obligations prior to signing.

Before the fame: from Bingo callers to celebrity status

*Collaborative post.

Lifestyle Blog image

When was the last time you saw your local Bingo caller up on the big screen? Or traipsing the cobbles of your favourite evening soap? Although it’s a somewhat unlikely career progression, there are actually a lot of current celebrities who started out on the stage at their local Bingo hall, calling out the numbers. That’s right, you’re not the only one who enjoys playing online Bingo and fun filled nights down at your local brick-and-mortar location!

Read on to find out more.

Gary Barlow

Before the days of playing huge venues and penning songs for other famous singers, Gary Barlow actually began his career as a Bingo caller. It seems that he was always a big fan of the game, and still is, as the Take That star continues to host his own regular Bingo nights, as well as organising a few for the crew when he goes on tour, aptly dubbing it “Barlow’s Bingo”. Not only that, for his 10th wedding anniversary Barlow got all his family and friends together for a big game of Bingo, reminiscing about his past life on the stage at his local Bingo hall. Let’s just hope that they liked the classic game nearly half as much as he does!

Speaking on his life before he found his fame, Barlow confessed: “I used to be a Bingo caller when I was first starting out. I used to love reading out the numbers. We have bingo nights backstage on the Take That tour to help everyone relax”.

Russell Crowe

Another unexpected ex-Bingo caller and world-famous actor, Russell Crowe’s first-ever job was actually in a Bingo hall back in Australia, calling out the numbers. Bingo is far cry from his current career, with Crowe bagging an Oscar for his starring role in the film Gladiator, however, it gave him his first taste of being on stage and entertaining a large audience. The star has also mentioned his passion for the game in several interviews, not shying away from discussing his early career move. Despite his affinity for the game, Crowe was sacked from his job at the Bingo hall for coming up with, and frequently using, his own rude versions of traditional calls. Oh, what a naughty boy!

Shane Richie

Shane Richie is best known for his time on Albert Square as EastEnders favourite Alfie Moon, with his character facing several trials and tribulations throughout his time on the show. The character is famous for his cheeky remarks and cockney slang dialect, so it’s quite easy to see how these traits would lend themselves to Richie’s time as a Bingo caller. Following his Bingo career, Richie also did a stint as a classic bluecoat at the go-to family-holiday destination, Pontins. Wherever Richie goes, and whatever he does, it’s clear to see he’s a born entertainer!

Anthony Cotton

Another soap star who’s found his place in the Bingo community is Coronation Street’s Anthony Cotton – who plays Sean Tully on the show. However, this time, Bingo calling came after he’d found fame. Cotton even called the numbers in an episode of the show, getting the chance to demonstrate his passion for the game.

Speaking on his side job, Cotton said: “I love bingo. My character was a caller for a while, so I’ve done my fair share of visits to bingo halls. An audience is an audience – it doesn’t matter if it’s in a theatre or a bingo hall.”

Self love is the best kind of love

*Collaborative post.

Loving ourselves unconditionally is really important. These days, it is so easy to compare ourselves and our lives with that of others. Social media makes it dead easy to scroll through the parts of our online friends’ carefully curated feed and wish our lives were as perfect as their lives. We see their perfectly filtered faces and bodies, and we wish we looked as good as they look. It is all nonsense. Social media is purely entertainment for me. I do find some of it informative but I know it is the curated life of others and not really the reality for many. Which is why I take what I see with a pinch of salt and focus on me.

Self-love is the best kind of love

Once you love your imperfect self unconditionally, you become free, free to just be you. You won’t obsess over what your online friends are doing with their lives or how perfect they look because you will be too busy living your imperfect life perfectly. We are all beautifully and wonderfully made, and we have our own uniqueness that makes us special. Focusing on that and loving every aspect of ourselves is how to fall deeper and deeper in love with our life.

Filtered lives online are becoming trendy. Many people feel like everyone else is living their best lives apart from them, but that is usually not the case. You never know what is really going on in the lives of others. What you see online is the version they are willing to share with their social media followers. It may not be their reality, which is why you should not envy others because you never really know. Instead, focus on you and shower yourself with love.

Self-love tips

Here are 4 self-love tips you may find very useful –

Embrace your quirks and all

We are all very special and we have certain aspects of ourselves that are uniquely ours. The foundation of loving yourself unconditionally is to embrace all parts of yourself. Most times we may be tempted to dumb down our quirks in other not to stand out too much but we should really be doing the opposite. For instance, if you are registered on dating websites, putting your quirks out there would make it easier to find your perfect mate.

Live intentionally

Now, this tip is a big one for me. I find that it is super easy to just take each day as it comes and not aspire to do anything ‘major’ with your life. Not living intentionally will do you no favours. You should aim high, dream big, and live every day intentionally.

Forgive yourself

Many of us would have made mistakes (or what we call mistakes) over the years. It is normal and all part of growing up. Forgiving yourself is really important when it comes to learning to love yourself unconditionally.

Set boundaries and protect yourself

With self-love, you need to set boundaries with others. Having healthy boundaries would protect you physically, mentally, and emotionally. You don’t want just anyone to have access to you or live in your head rent-free. Also, setting boundaries would help you say no when you need to say no, and get rid of people who do not want the best for you.

Do you have any self-love tips to share?
