Outfit post: A Winter Coat

Hey fashion lovers! How is the cold treating you? The weather has been painfully cold here in the last few days. It has been so hard getting out of the house in the morning run. But thanks to my amazing Helly Hensen coat, the school runs have been a lot warmer. This beautiful winter coat is made to withstand the chilly winter season and it does just that. I love the simple design and the camouflage colour is a beauty. This is now my favourite winter coat.

I like to have a few coats/jackets for the different seasons. For winter, I like my coats a little heavier to withstand the cold weather. Having hoods on a few are ideal, plus they usually need to be waterproof for when I have to be out and about in the rain. I like to spend a bit more on my outerwear because they have to be great quality to withstand the harsh weather conditions. And quality usually means more money, which I am happy to spend  as long as it is good value for money.

This Helly Hensen Svelbard Parka is good value for me. It is my second winter coat from the brand and I know their coats are top quality pieces that usually last for years.

4 ways to stay chic this winter season

Winter is around the corner and the chill is definitely in the air. The autumn leaves were a beautiful sight this morning while doing the school run. I will miss autumn and the fashion when it ends, but I have winter and the chic fashion to look forward to. Today, I spent most of my time in the shops doing some shopping for the kids, and admiring winter fashion in stores. I am loving the colours in this season, and can’t wait to style them up. If you are wondering how to stay chic this winter season, you are in luck. Here are 5 ways you could do this –

Focus on your layering

The first style tip to stay chic this winter season is layering. Focus on your layering and you will effortlessly look stylish. Apart from layering to look stylish, it also keeps you nice and warm which is important if you want to look good. Being too cold or too warm won’t leave you looking fashionable. Fashion and comfort go hand in hand.

Style TipLayering is dead easy with winter fashion. The way to nail this look is to go for thinner pieces that offer the maximum warmth, so cashmere pieces are great for layering. Go for cardigans over long sleeve tops and scarves, and you will be layering on fleek!

Go for gloves

Get for statement gloves to add an instant wow to your look. I got some stunning looking gloves from River Island many years ago, and I still have them. They always get compliments because they stand out from the regular gloves you see in store and they look really glam with the gold studs on black leather. Going for statement gloves is one way to stay chic this winter. Many high street stores like Next, Debenhams and New Look, stock lovely looking gloves, so you should to find a pair you love.

Style Tip – Pair your long gloves with shorter sleeve coats/jackets for the chic look.

Wear a cape

I love wearing capes so much because they are dead easy to style. There are a few capes in my winter wardrobe and I know I will be adding a couple to the collection. Capes can create a effortless chic look and that is why I wear them when I can’t think of anything else to wear. Plus, they keep me super warm. I can usually get away with no wearing an additional coat when I have a cape on.

Style Tip – Keep the bottom leaner when wearing a cape. I usually stick to styling my capes with leggings or slim jeans for a balanced look.

Add a statement scarf

I love my scarves and I have a collection for each season. This winter, I will be wearing my thick scarves to stay warm and look chic. Winter fashion is never complete without scarves.

Style Tip – Go for oversized scarves in bright prints and colours to wake up your look.

How many garments do we really need in our wardrobes?

*Collaborative post.

Shopping no longer feels as guilt free as it used to back in the day. A lot has changed now and we consumers tend to think twice before splashing out on new pieces and accessories. Times have changed and we have all had to adjust to the new times. I no longer shop like I used to a few years ago, and I think twice before I add any new additions to my wardrobe.  But the question remains – How many garments do we really need in our wardrobes? Let’s see if I can break this down –

How many garments do we really need in our wardrobes?

Many of us think it is easier to shop for men than for women, but it is pretty much the same process most of the time. I remember being shocked back in 2017 when it was revealed that British women spend an average of £74 per month on clothes compared to British men who spend an average of £100. That same study also revealed that the average man owns about 56 pieces of clothing but only wears about 62% of these regularly. Women on the other hand own 95 but only wear 59%.

Tops and blouses

With tops, the best way to go is to have about six to ten pieces per wardrobe. Having said that, this is just an estimate. The amount of tops you would need in your wardrobe depends on your lifestyle, employment, budget and so on, but it is a guide to go by. I like to mix and match my tops with other pieces to create different looks. This works great for me and I find I get more wear out of each and every piece that way.

Pants, skirts and shorts

With pants, I like to have about six to eight of them in my wardrobe. That way I always have options but not too many that I forget about them. One denim expert recommended having about three pairs of jeans in the wardrobe and it makes perfect sense! There is no point having over ten or twenty pairs of jeans in your wardrobe. It is likely you won’t be able to wear half of the jeans most of the time.

It also makes sense to make some room for skirts and shorts especially in the summer months. I like to have a couple of these each for when the weather allows.

outerwear image

Outerwear is key

Having a great quality outerwear is very important. They are great wardrobe assets as they can help finish off any look. I like to have about 4 outerwear pieces. The key to getting your outwear pieces to stay with you for awhile is to invest a bit more in them. I always recommend at least two casual jackets, one waterproof jacket and one or two blazers in different designs.

Blazers are particularly important as they can take you from the office to the restaurant effortlessly. You can put on a blazer for a meeting at work underneath a stunning dress shirt, or top and skirt for example.

Shoes are made for walking

Shoes are super important. They have the power to take an outfit to a whole new level, and they can also completely ruin an outfit. I must confess, O like to have a couple of pairs in my wardrobe but you don’t really need as many pairs of shoes as you think you need. Three good pairs of shoes would work for many – One pair of smart shoes for work and events, one pair of boots for when the weather demands, and a pair of trainers for casual outings.

So how many garments do we really need in our wardrobes?

I would say between 18 – 25 garments. At the end of the day, this is just a guide. You may need more or less depending on the weather, lifestyle, budget and space. I hope this post helps you rethink every new wardrobe purchase you want to make. Have a great week.
