As a twin mum and also as a woman and a writer, I have a lot of different places and spaces in my life. There are times when I need to be dressed up and there are times when dressing up is the worst idea ever. My kids, like all kids, like to make messes and I like to be able to participate or at least not lose my mind when I inevitably get sucked into their dusty fun.
But there are plenty of moments in my life when I need to look polished and put together. For my wardrobe, the tops that I choose have to be wardrobe workhorses.
Here are my top five styles that are a staple in my closet.
1) The Short-Sleeve Top
Whether made of a casual material like cotton or a dressier fabric like silk, a short-sleeved top is the most versatile piece in my wardrobe. I can wear it by itself in warmer months and I can layer it under a cardigan during the fall and winter months. Nothing gets more use in my closet.
2) The Button Down Top
This is another top that is a workhorse in my wardrobe. Theses tops can be made of a heavier weight material for warmth during the cooler months or it can be made with a lightweight fabric to use during the warmer months. This style is perfect for a casual weekend brunch or a work meeting. These tops look best fitted comfortably to the body. I like to get my button down tops tailored for just the right fit.
3) The Twist Front Blouse
This top is a sweet mix of femininity and flair. It is versatile, fitted, and gives me the confidence I need to go from a work meeting into a date night. It can be dressed up easily with a pair of heels and is flattering on all body types. Choose it in a rich, bold color or pattern for a statement piece or choose it in a muted neutral for a laying piece to wear with any and all of your outfits.
4) The Knit Top
The knit top is a piece I love to wear and layer in the colder months. It wear it under jackets, over other shirts, or simply by itself. It can be worn with a business suit, skirt, or a casual pair of jeans on the weekend. Its ease and predictability makes it a staple in my wardrobe and makes it a piece I’m never without in my closet.
5) The Crop Top
Okay, hear me out. Today’s crop top is not the wild child shirt you wore when you were a teenager. Crop tops can be made out of delicate materials and fabrics and when I pair them with high-waist pants they are not too revealing for daytime. Give this style top a try in your wardrobe the next time you’re in a rut. It’s a fun exploration into something creative and trendy!
Those are my top five tops that I love as staples in my closet. What are your favourite tops?
