Beautiful skin is a result of the right skin regimen and healthy living. But before deciding on the right skin regimen to follow, you need to know your skin type. Knowing your skin type will determine the ideal steps and methods you have to take to have glowing skin.

I would say the most troublesome skin type to take care of is sensitive skin. Sensitive skin has an extremely low resistance to a whole lot of beauty products and even some natural beauty products. It’s not bad to have sensitive skin. You just need to be extra careful with what you apply on your skin, how much of it to apply and when you apply it.

If you have sensitive skin, here are 6 tips that will help you take good care of your skin.

  1. Choose a suitable cleanser for your skin

Cleansing your skin off dirt, dust and grime is important to make sure you have clear and healthy looking skin. But for ladies with sensitive skin, there’s a limit to what you use to cleanse your face.

When choosing the right cleanser, go for cleansers that are specifically designed for sensitive skin. This is to ensure that the chemical content in the cleaners are not too harsh for your sensitive skin.

Cleansing your face twice a day is ideal for your skin type. Use a mild soap to wash off the dirt from the surface, then use a cleanser to help clear out your pores. Remember to be gentle when cleansing.

  1. Moisturize regularly

For that smooth and supple skin, moisturize at least twice a day, both at morning and night. Moisturizing your skin helps to protect the skin from any harsh effects from the environment and also give your skin the necessary moisture so it doesn’t dry out.

Be extremely vigilant when it comes to weather changes. When the weather is cold, your skin will need more moisture than before. In such a situation, you have to moisturize more than before to prevent your skin from drying out.

  1. Apply sunscreen

This is more like a sequel to applying moisturizer. Moisturizers will help seal in the moisture in your skin but sunscreen will keep the harmful effect of the sunrays from damaging your skin.

Sensitive skin gets more affected from the sunrays than other skin types. So to be safe, apply sunscreen with SPF 30 for maximum protection.

  1. Ease up on the skincare products

Too many skincare products can be too much for your skin to handle. When you have sensitive skin, less is always more. To have beautiful skin, you have to stick to the basics. A simple routine of gentle cleansing, applying moisturizer and sunscreen is all you need to have glowing skin.

There’s no need to overburden your skin with too many products or procedures. Just keep it simple and your skin will thank you for it.

  1. Choose your products wisely

To prevent your skin from getting irritated, you need to choose your products wisely. Read the labels of the  products to make sure that they don’t contain any irritants like fragrance and paraben preservatives. A rule of thumb is to stick with products that don’t have complicated formulas. If the list of ingredients on the label is very long, chances are that one or two of the items on the list will irritate your skin. The shorter the list, the safer the product is.

  1. Test every new product

This is by far the most effective precautionary measure for sensitive skin. Most of the skin problems you experience are from immediately trusting products that swear they are great for sensitive skin.

Before using a new product, test it out for at least a week on an inconspicuous patch of your skin. If that patch of skin gets inflamed or irritated within a week then don’t use the product.

What is your skin type? How do you take care of it?

Do You Know Your Skin Type?

Our beauty topic for this week is Skin Types. You need to know your skin type in order to know how to care for it and use the right products. Before you think about make-up, it is important to have a healthy skin. There are five skin types which are as follows:

1. Normal Skin:

Skin

The normal skin type is smooth, unblemished and evenly toned. Women with this skin type are blessed as they hardly suffer from breakouts and other skin problems.

2. Dry Skin:

Dry Skin

The dry skin usually appears flaky and feels rough to touch. It is quite a problematic skin type as wrinkles tend to develop early and dryness tends to intensify with age and weather conditions. The good thing about this skin type is that pores are almost invisible and women with this skin type hardly have breakouts.

3. Oily Skin:

Oily Skin

The oily skin feels greasy which makes it prone to breakouts, blackheads and other skin problems.  The plus side with the oily skin is wrinkles do not appear prematurely and it maintains its elasticity longer than other skin types.

4. Combination Skin:

Combination Skin

This is my skin type and I know most women fall under this skin type. The combination skin combines the features of both the oily and dry skin. The T-zone is the oily part while the cheeks are the dry part of the skin.

5. Sensitive Skin:

The sensitive skin can be dry and or oily. It usually feels flaky, itchy or bumpy. Women with sensitive skins usually have underlying skin problems like dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis and so on. These skin conditions can be treated with the right products and medication.

Whatever your skin type is, whether it is normal, dry, oily, sensitive or combination skin type, you can encourage it to its maximum protection by using the right skin care routine every day. Sometimes, your skin type may change due to age, weather or skin care regime. Next week I will be writing on skin care routines for the various skin types so look out for that post.
