Understanding the Different Skin Types

There are five basic skin types: Dry, Oily, normal, combination and sensitive. It is important to note that skin types are primarily determined by genetics and are not the same as skin conditions. Let’s do a quick rundown of each of these skin types;

1.   Dry Skin

Dry skin describes a skin type characterised by a dull and flaky appearance. Although pores are unnoticeable, people with dry skin typically notice fine lines and a feeling of tightness on their face, mainly because dry skin produces less oil compared to normal skin.

2.   Oily Skin

Oily skin is characterised by excessive sebum production, usually resulting in the skin looking shiny and greasy throughout the Tzone area with enlarged pores.

3.   Normal Skin

A normal skin type is one that is not too dry nor too oily. It can best be described as a well-balanced skin. People with normal skin typically have a radiant appearance and a smooth and even texture without visible pores.

4.   Combination Skin

A combination skin type is one with parts ( the T-zone area) that are oily and other parts that are dry(cheeks).

5.   Sensitive Skin

Also, sensitive skin is usually referred to as a skin type; it is possible to have sensitive, dry skin and also sensitive oily skin. This skin type is usually prone to external irritants and may appear reddish, itchy or dry when irritated.

How to Identify Your Skin Type

Discover the skin type you have through any of these methods;

1.   The Wash Test

This method involves watching how your skin looks and feels after a wash.

  • Start by washing your face with a gentle cleanser and pat your face dry with a clean towel.
  • Wait for 20 minutes without applying any skincare product.
  • If your skin looks dry and feels tight, you have a dry skin
  • If your face has a shiny appearance throughout, you have oily skin
  • If only your t-zone area appears shiny, you have combination skin
  • If your skin is hydrated and comfortable, you have normal skin.
2.   The Blotting Sheet Method

Alternatively, you can discover your skin type by pressing a blotting paper onto your skin.

  • Wash your face with a gentle cleanser, pat dry, and wait 30 minutes.
  • Press the blotting paper onto various areas of your face and hold to see the oil marking
  • If the blotting paper is soaked with oil from all areas of your face, you have oily skin
  • If you see little to no oil, you have dry skin
  • If the blotting paper absorbed oil from your t-zone area, you probably would have a combination skin
  • If there’s minimal oil from every area of your face, you have normal skin.

Discovering the skin type you have is not rocket science. With any of these simple methods, you can find out your skin type and learn how to better care for it

Product Review: Boots No 7 Products

face-mask-picture

I had a mini shopping haul in my local Boots store some days ago, and I decided to step up my skin care routine, and try some new skin care products. I usually never go for Boots No 7 products because I believe they are not made for my skin tone. But there was a 3 for 2 offer going on that day and I needed to try the No 7 Lash & Brow Perfector so badly  (I heard all about it at the Street Style Bus Event), so I went for that and 2 other cool products I needed, which were – No 7 Beautiful Skin Purifying Mask for Normal/Oily Skin and No 7 Beautiful Skin Overnight Radiance Boost for All Skin Types.

Starting off with this amazing purifying mask, I have used it a few times now and I love it. I wish I could use it every day. It is so far the best face mask I have ever used. It is a new product so no product description on Boots Website but here are my thoughts:

PROS

  1. It feels amazing on the skin. Once it is applied on the face, it heats up and feels so warm and nice. I love the warmth. It feels like I am in a Spa.
  2. I like that the application and waiting time is quick. The mask should be massaged for 2 mins, and the waiting time is an extra 2 minutes before rinsing off.
  3. My skin feels AMAZING after. It feels and looks smooth. And it looks brighter as well.
  4. It is affordable at £12.50, and there is usually the 3 for 2 offer to take advantage of.
  5. I like the packaging.

I have been after a good Lash and Brow Gel for awhile now. I ran out of The Body Shop Brow Gel some months ago, and I have been in search of another since then. So when I saw how brillant this No7 Lash & Brow Perfector was at the beauty sessions at the Street Style Bus Event, I knew I had to get it.

No7 Lash & Brow Perfector is a caring, conditioning gel to enhance and shape your lashes and brows.

Here are my thoughts:

  1. It conditiones my lashes and brows.
  2. My brows stay in place all day.
  3. I love the compact packaging.
  4. It is quite affordable at £8.50.
  5. It has a very light texture. It does not clump the brows or lashes.

Do You Know Your Skin Type?

Our beauty topic for this week is Skin Types. You need to know your skin type in order to know how to care for it and use the right products. Before you think about make-up, it is important to have a healthy skin. There are five skin types which are as follows:

1. Normal Skin:

Skin

The normal skin type is smooth, unblemished and evenly toned. Women with this skin type are blessed as they hardly suffer from breakouts and other skin problems.

2. Dry Skin:

Dry Skin

The dry skin usually appears flaky and feels rough to touch. It is quite a problematic skin type as wrinkles tend to develop early and dryness tends to intensify with age and weather conditions. The good thing about this skin type is that pores are almost invisible and women with this skin type hardly have breakouts.

3. Oily Skin:

Oily Skin

The oily skin feels greasy which makes it prone to breakouts, blackheads and other skin problems.  The plus side with the oily skin is wrinkles do not appear prematurely and it maintains its elasticity longer than other skin types.

4. Combination Skin:

Combination Skin

This is my skin type and I know most women fall under this skin type. The combination skin combines the features of both the oily and dry skin. The T-zone is the oily part while the cheeks are the dry part of the skin.

5. Sensitive Skin:

sensitive-skin

The sensitive skin can be dry and or oily. It usually feels flaky, itchy or bumpy. Women with sensitive skins usually have underlying skin problems like dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis and so on. These skin conditions can be treated with the right products and medication.

Whatever your skin type is, whether it is normal, dry, oily, sensitive or combination skin type, you can encourage it to its maximum protection by using the right skin care routine every day. Sometimes, your skin type may change due to age, weather or skin care regime. Next week I will be writing on skin care routines for the various skin types so look out for that post.
