Know your colours

We have colours that suit us better than others. If you don’t know your colours, the best way to find them is to try out pieces in different shades and see the colours that suit your natural colouring best. Your favourite colours may not be “your colours”, so play around with various colours to discover the best shades for your natural colouring.

Know your body shape

I have written extensively about knowing your body shape on Fashion and Style Police. You can catch up on some of the posts here and here. Knowing your body shape and what suits your shape best would help you stick to the right pieces that showcase your body in the right way.

Invest in quality items

Once you know your colours and body shape, the next step is to invest in timeless, quality items to create a capsule wardrobe. I always choose quality over quantity, so investing in quality classic items is a must because they are forever stylish and hang around for longer. A great place to start when it comes to investing in quality items is in the bag and shoes department, and then as the need arises and the bank balance allows, you can splurge on other areas.

Be unique and stay comfortable

A personal style should be unique and comfortable. There’s no point in developing a signature look that resembles that of your friend or favourite celebrity. For it to work and stand the test of time, your style needs to be all you. So take your time and discover what that entails to create your look.

Get inspired

I know I just said we should be unique and all, but sometimes, we may struggle to discover what our likes and dislikes are when it comes to fashion and style. So it’s okay to get inspiration from other outlets like fashion magazines, style blogs, and social media. As long as it is just inspiration, that’s fine! I get styling ideas from various sources, and these ideas inspire me to create my look.

Adding colour

Summer is synonymous with bright colours and patterns, but it’s also the perfect time of year to celebrate a love of simple palettes and neutral shades. The beauty of summer dressing is that you can mix and match pieces and outfits to suit your mood or the occasion and try different trends. One day you may fancy throwing on a classic white cotton summer dress while another, you may want to go all-out with colour and opt for a bright pink, yellow, orange or green dress or a vibrant printed co-ord. Choose colours that make you feel happy and suit your skin tone. It’s a great idea to try different colours before you buy clothes to see if they suit you. You may find that you love a piece on the hanger but the colour doesn’t flatter you, or that you assume that a certain shade won’t suit but it looks amazing on. Be open to experimenting.

Catering to different occasions

Summer is a time when many of us enjoy a wide range of activities and social occasions. From chilling out at the beach or the park with a picnic to glamming up for a day at the races or a wedding, it’s important to think about your diary when shopping for additions to your wardrobe. If you are attending an event, and there’s a smart dress code, give yourself time to look for outfits and try different looks. You may want to opt for chic party dresses or floor-length gowns for a formal wedding or a ball, or you might want to explore different ideas, such as a tailored suit or a matching skirt and top. For the races, have fun with accessories and choose pieces that are comfortable to wear. Short suits, lightweight summer dresses and jumpsuits are brilliant options.

Embracing summer trends

It’s always good to add seasonal pieces to a capsule wardrobe to revamp your summer looks and embrace new trends. This summer, the hottest trends include floral prints, bright blues, sheer clothing, crochet, cut-out tops and dresses, sunset hues and fringing.

Accessorising

Accessorising is an easy, affordable way to freshen up your wardrobe. As temperatures rise, swap bobble hats, chunky scarves, boots and dark-coloured bags for sunglasses, statement jewellery, bright clutch, tote or cross-body bags, silk scarves and fedoras, straw hats or caps.

Embrace summer trends, try different looks, have fun putting outfits together and switch up your accessories.
