Charity of the Month – Beat Eating Disorders

The charity of the month is Beat Eating Disorders, formerly known as the Eating Disorders Association. This charity was founded in 1989 to end the suffering caused by eating orders and to support the lives affected by it. I came across this amazing charity on LinkedIn and I was blown away by their work.

Eating disorders are terrible illnesses that affect the lives of around 1.25 million people in the UK. Many of those struggling with this illness keep it a secret from their family and friends, and they come from all ages, backgrounds, races, and gender. Eating disorders can affect anyone, regardless of who you are and where you are from.

Eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), and other specified feeding or eating disorder (OSFED). It is a horrible illness that can ruin lives but with the right support and treatment, full recovery is possible.

I feel it is the secrecy that is the worst part of this illness. Eating disorders usually come along with a lot of shame, which is why the sufferers battle with it silently. The more awareness raised about eating disorders, the more comfortable people will be about talking about these issues. This is why Beat Eating Disorders charity is doing such an amazing job. I am a huge fan of this charity.

Charity of the Month – Shout 85258

The charity of the month this February is Shout! I am now working closely with this charity and their work is so amazing. For those who are not familiar with Shout 85258, it is a free, confidential, 24/7 text-messaging support service for people struggling with their mental health. Also, Shout 85258 is the first service from Mental Health Innovations and it was launched in May 2019. Since the launch, Shout has had more than 1,000,000 conversations with people who are experiencing mental health distress.

It is great to discover services like Shout 85258 working hard to help those who need support in an easy and confidential way. Many of us rather communicate via text messages these days, so having a charity step up and provide support in an innovative way is really helpful.

Here are some facts about mental health in the UK from Mind and NHS:

  • 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem of some kind each year in England.
  • 1 in 6 people report experiencing a common mental health problem (like anxiety and depression) in any given week in England.
  • 1 in 10 children experiences mental illness.

Mental health illness can be a lonely experience for those dealing with it. In a busy noisy world, it is hard dealing with any form of distress. Plus, there’s still a stigma attached to mental health illness, which is why we must continue to talk about it and raise more awareness so more people feel comfortable seeking help.

How to help Shout 85258

There are many ways to get involved in supporting this charity. You can help Shout 85258 continue to support those in need by donating, volunteering, fundraising and partnering. Another way of getting involved is by sharing the Shout 85258 number on social media to spread the word.

Charity of the Month – Buttle UK

The Charity of the Month is Buttle UK. This charity focuses on children and young people in crisis. It is dedicated to helping young people and children experiencing financial hardship and social issues. Buttle UK provides valuable support to this vulnerable group. This support is designed to improve emotional, educational, and social outcomes through the Chances for Children grants, which funds boarding schools for those children whose home environment is disruptive and chaotic.

I think this charity is doing an amazing job. It can be extremely challenging for children and young people when their home which is supposed to be their sanctuary is a chaotic mess. Being able to afford boarding school through Chances for Children grants from Buttle UK gives vulnerable children living in disruptive homes opportunities to thrive and shine mentally, emotionally, and physically.

Here is a quote from Buttle UK about the grants they offer:

They are made directly to children and young people who are facing a range of complex issues. They are tailored to their particular needs, in order to prevent them from falling further into crisis and help them to transform their lives.

The grants pay for a range of items and costs, many of which are those we would expect any child growing up in the UK to have, but which their parents or carers cannot afford. In a small number of cases, where home is not the best place for a child to be, the grant pays for them to attend boarding school.

You can read more about the amazing work the charity is doing here. Also, if you or someone you know is interested in hearing more about the grants, you can check eligibility here.

There are many ways to support this charity, you can donate whatever you can afford, and you can also arrange to fundraise for the charity.
