Beauty Muse: Taraji P Hensen

Hey beauty lovers! The beautiful Taraji P Hensen is the beauty muse this month. I am a huge fan of this gorgeous black woman. This American actress and author has an amazing skin and her facial features are simply beautiful. It is hard to believe she is actually 49 years old. She could easily pass as a woman in her early thirties. This woman is simply gorgeous!

I remember seeing Taraji P Hensen in her first role in Baby Boy. That movie was one of my favourite back in the day. I became a fan of Hensen immediately. It would be lovely to be a fly on her wall to see how she gets to keep her skin glowing this much. But since that is not possible, reading her interviews where she shares her skincare routine and beauty tips is the closest to spying I can get.

Here are some of her skincare and beauty secrets she shared with Vogue a few days ago –

For her makeup

“I just like to look refreshed…. I’d usually just pop a lash on and go!”

“I’m just showing off for y’all. I just want you to know I know how to do makeup.”

This is true, she usually wears her makeup light and the natural look works great for her.

Here a few more skincare tips she shared in a different interview with Glamour

I wash my face in the morning and at night. I drink a lot of water. You have to stay hydrated. As far as my hair…I wrap my hair at night because that’s less heat on it everyday. I’m a health whore, for lack of a better word. I love healthy hair and healthy skin. Also, I love skin that glows. That’s why I love this shea butter, because I put it on and I feel like, when I go home and I go to bed I take my clothes off, I feel like I’ve just put lotion on. And I only put it on once a day. I use the cream for my feet and I put socks on at night.

Her tips are spot on. Drinking a lot of water everyday does wonders for the skin and overall health. Washing the face morning and evening nourishes the facial skin and keeps it clean/moisturised. These tips definitely help the skin stay healthy and I can see they are working great for her.

Skincare basics you should know

Taking care of your skin is important. I started paying more attention to my skin in my 20s, and I wish I started earlier. When it comes to having a great skincare routine, the earlier you start, the better. There is only so much makeup can hide. If the foundation isn’t right, the paint would look off! So ensure your skin is in top shape before spending money on makeup to plaster on it. Here are some skincare basics you should know.

Know your skin

The first step in having a good skincare routine is to know your skin. Is it oily, dry, normal or combination? Oily skin is greasy and shiny. Many of us had our own share of oily skin in our teenage years. Dry skin is dull and flaky with rough patches, especially across the cheeks. Combination skin is a perfectly even toned skin, with maybe an oily T-zone. Knowing your skin type will help care for your skin properly, and with the right skincare products.

Use gentle skincare products

Once you know your skin type, you need to get the most gentle skincare products for it. Avoid anything too harsh for your skin, Essential oil-based products are generally good. The simpler the product, the better. Don’t experiment to much when shopping for skincare products. Stick to products you have tried and tested and only use new products you have researched properly. Always read the instructions at the back to ensure there are no harsh ingredients.

Don’t pick your face

I know how tempting it is to squeeze spots and blackheads. I also know how horrible it looks when the squeezing goes wrong. Squeezing spreads the bacteria, damages the skin and can scar. My advice is to leave the blackheads and spots alone when they spring up. Alternatively, you can have they removed professionally if they bother you that much. The skincare pros steam the face to loosen the blackheads and extract without any scars or infection. You can also have your acne treated professionally as well.

Cleanse, tone and mositurise

These steps are the holy grail of skincare. You really should not skip any of them. Your skin will thank you for it. Cleansing is the first and most important step. You need to always remove your makeup before going to bed. Toner is the second most important step. It is designed to tighten the skin all up again after cleansing. Moisturising is the third and final step. A light moisturiser is great for nights and a heavier moisturiser for the day. A good night cream can also perform wonders on your skin.

Healthy lifestyle

Having a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet and good sleep would do your skin wonders. Drinking the recommended amount of water everyday helps your skin too! So if all else fails, ensure you have a healthy lifestyle to keep your skin glowing.

Hair growth before, during and after pregnancy

Our hair is our crown and we should pay more attention to it. When I say hair, I mean our natural hair. Hair extensions, wigs and all the rest are good but our primary concern should be with our natural hair that grows out of our head. I have neglected my natural hair for so long and I am still paying for all the damage I caused it. The good part of the experience was having the knowledge to care for my hair going forward and share my insight with my daughter and anyone who cares to listen.

Our hair grows at a rate f about 1cm every month. It is less for some of us and more for others. It all depends on the type of hair, genes and how we nurture our hair.

Our hair lasts for between 1 to 6 years. Then it sheds and a new hair replaces it. On a good day, we lose around 100 hairs. The older we get, the less our hair grows, which is the younger you are, the easier it is to grow your hair. It is faster to our hair between the ages of 15 and 25 because this is when out hair is at the thickest. The irony of this fact is this is the stage most young girls are developing and finding themselves. So they end up experimenting with all sorts of hairstyles, which may damage their hair in the end. The hair usually thins out between the ages of 30 and 50 years.

Hormones and Hair Growth

Our hormones affect our hair in various ways. During the teenage years, our hormones make the hair greasier and curlier. While in menopause, our hair becomes drier. When we are pregnant, our hair becomes really thick and hair loss decreases massively thanks to the high levels of oestrogen and progesterone. I still remember how thick and long my hair was while pregnant with the twins. My hair was so healthy and shiny, it was unbelievable. However, once I had the kiddies, my hair started shedding at an alarming rate. All the hair that would have been lost over 9 months fell out within weeks after delivery.

I went natural after childbirth and I have been growing my hair since then. My hair has really improved since I went natural. I have been nurturing it and paying more attention in ensuring it stays healthy. My efforts have paid off and my hair is thanking me for it.

How do you nurture your hair? Any hair growth tips?
