How to care for your hair while you sleep

We sleep for an average of 8 hours a day and our hair can get caught up as we sleep. If your hair is natural (afro) like mine, you may need to pay a bit more attention to how you care for your hair as you sleep. Here are a few ways to protect your hair while sleeping:

Invest in a silk pillowcase

Investing in a silk pillowcase is one of the most simple ways to take care of your natural hair while sleeping. Silk is a gentle fabric that protects your hair from excessive damage and pulling while you toss and turn as you sleep. Silk pillowcases are also super comfy and they aid in a good night’s sleep, which is another good reason to invest in them. I have quite a few and I can’t imagine not sleeping on a silk pillowcase now.

Use a silk scarf and bonnet

Still on how amazing silk fabric is when it comes to hair care, invest in a couple of silk scarves and bonnets, and your hairline will thank you for it. Wrapping your hair in a silk scarf will keep it moisturised and protected as you sleep. Using a silk scarf, bonnet, and pillowcase at nighttime will do wonders for your hair.

Moisturise your hair before bedtime

It is important you moisturise your hair before you sleep. I usually moisturise my hair with Black Seed Oil and water mixture in a spray bottle just before I wrap it up in my silk scarf and bonnet. This keeps my hair soft and moisturised overnight.

Avoid tight protective styles

Tight protective styles damage hair, especially the hairline. It is best to ensure you avoid hairstyles that put excessive pressure on the hairline, especially when you sleep. Loose styles are best if you prefer not to sleep with your hair down. I prefer putting my hair in loose plaits and leaving them down but wrapped for bedtime.

Beauty Muse: Cece Winans

The lovely and talented Priscilla Marie Winans Love known professionally as Cece Winans is the Beauty Muse for this month. For those who do not know, Cece Winans is singer, songwriter, author, talk show host, and actress. I have been a huge fan of her for many decades now. Her music is forever playing on my Spotify Gospel playlist. My favourite track of hers is Mercy Said No! The track reminds me of my spiritual life every time I listen to it.

Cece Winans has one of the most beautiful faces I have ever seen. Her skin is flawless, her hair is always gorgeously made and her facial features are so striking. This woman has not aged a bit. It looks like she is ageing backwards. She is 56 years old but she looks way younger than that.

Beauty Muse: Cece Winans

I would love to be a fly on her wall so I can spot how she takes care of her skin. I won’t be too surprised to find that she doesn’t do anything out of the ordinary skincare routine. Most of the time, women that look this good at her age are just naturally blessed. Her interview with blackgospel.com confirmed my suspicions. Cece Winams was asked to share some of her beauty secrets, here is an except from the interview:

Well, I think beauty comes from within. I really do. I do laugh a lot. Even through rough times you’ve got to learn how to laugh. You have to find the joy. I really enjoy life, and I appreciate all that God has done. I would say that my relationship with God refreshes me every day. We all go through challenges but Jesus proves himself to be a wonderful Lord and Savior. So my faith is number one. You have to have your priorities straight.
And then other than that, washing your face and putting Vaseline on it. Nothing fancy. My mom to this day washes her face with Vaseline on it. It’s like, ‘’Wow, mom. If I can have a skin like yours when I get to your age, I would be doing good.’’ Just keep the things simple. I think women are so hard on themselves. We have to learn to really appreciate who God has made us to be, complement one another and laugh.

I can tell she laughs a lot. She is usually laughing in her photos. I love the Vaseline tip as well.

What do you think of Cece Winans? Do you like her as a Beauty Muse? Are you a fan of her music?

Haircare Secrets of the Stars

I got this amazing book – How to be adorned; A girl’s guide to Hollywood glamour by Caroline Cox. The amazing book is about all things beauty and I was reading a chapter about haircare secrets of the stars the other day. I found the chapter really interesting. It was fun to dig into all the beauty tips of the stars like a fly on the wall. Here are some of my favourite hair care tips from the book  –

Constance Bennett

Constance Bennett was an American stage, film, radio, and television actress. This beauty washed her hair every 2 weeks (like I do) with soap and eggs! After washing her hair with soap, she would rub in whites of 2 eggs into her hair and rinse it all off with hot water, then warm water and finally cold water.

Irene Dunne

Irene Dunne was an American actress and singer. Her haircare secret was rubbing in hot oil into her hair 3 three hours before washing, followed by a vinegar rinse. She washed her hair once every 3 weeks.

Eva Longoria

The beautiful Eva Longoria touches her roots with hairspray and eyeshadow the same shade as her hair dye to blend in. I think this tip is one to remember. I love her hair.

Madonna

Madonna loves showing off her roots. She intentionally lets them show to create an edgy look undone look and it works great for her.

Jerry Hall

Jerry Hall washes her hair once a week and doesn’t use a blow-dry. She allows her hair air dry and uses French mink oil on the ends of her hair.

Jennifer Lopez

The beautiful Jennifer Lopez aka JLO rinses her hair with mineral water to flatten the cuticles and help the hair stay shiny. No wonder her hair is always looking so good.

Do you have a tried and tested hair care tip to share?
