Did you know that you can prevent skin cancer, premature aging and wrinkles by using sunscreen? Sun Cream protects your skin from ultraviolet (UV) rays which could damage your skin. But just applying sun lotion doesn’t solve your problem; applying it correctly does.
It’s important for you to know the right way to apply sun cream so that you can get the protection you really need. With the following tips in mind you can be rest assured that you’ll have full protection from the UV rays and its harmful effects.
-
Get a good sun cream
Getting the right sun cream that provides the needed protection is the first step to getting your sunscreen application right. There are certain things you need to look out for when choosing the right sunscreen.
Choose a sunscreen that contains SPF that is 30 or higher that will give you overall protection. In addition, make sure that your sunscreen is water-resistant with broad spectrum protection. Due to the warm weather you’ll sweat or you’ll enjoy some time in the water. The water-resistant nature of your sunscreen will guarantee your protection from UV rays.
-
Apply your sunscreen at least 15 – 30 minutes before you step outside
For sunscreen to be effective, it needs time to be absorbed into your skin. It takes about 15 minutes for your skin to absorb the sunscreen.
Often most people apply sunscreen when they’re outside and that makes them prone to sunburns because they didn’t give the sunscreen enough time to be absorbed by their skin.
- Be generous with the amount of sun cream you apply
A little usually goes a long way, but in the case of sun cream a lot is your best bet. Usually the recommended amount of sun cream you should apply is at least an ounce. A good rule of thumb when applying is to pour enough sunscreen to cover your palm. Use that as a guide to apply sunscreen.
- Apply sunscreen on the areas that will be exposed to the sun
Which part of your body will be the most exposed to the sun? You should always ensure you apply sunscreen to all these parts that will be exposed to the sun. Don’t stop at just applying sunscreen to your arms, legs and face – get to all those intricate places like the back of your neck, ears and your hairline. Don’t ignore your lips as well. Make use of lip balm that contains at least SPF 15.
- Use sunscreen multiple times during the day
A single application of sunscreen is not enough to give you the needed protection from the sun’s rays. After a few hours the sunscreen you apply in the morning loses its efficacy. This leaves your skin vulnerable.
So you have to make it a habit to apply sunscreen often. Here’s a tip: apply sunscreen every 90 minutes. And to make sure that your skin is protected carry a bottle of sunscreen handy so you can apply it regularly.
I hope these tips are helpful. Stay safe in the sun.
