The benefits of protective hairstyles

With summer on its way, I am looking forward to wearing more of my natural hair. My hair is usually in a protective style (plaits/twists) and then I wear my wigs, but with the warmer weather coming through, I am excited to style my hair the way Mother Nature intended. I am also looking forward to some good old retail therapy and looking out for some cool deals on hair accessories and hair products.

Having my natural hair mainly in protective styles has some amazing benefits. Here are a few of them –

Retains hair length

One of the most amazing benefits of protective hairstyles is that they help retain hair length. Protective hair styles as the name implies protect hair roots and tips, which leads to retaining hair length, which is a big deal for us coily hair girls.

Easy to maintain

Protective hairstyles are naturally very easy to maintain daily. Once done, all it needs is daily moisturising and you are good to go! I usually moisturise with water from a spray bottle and hair oils – coconut oil and black seed oil, and since it is so easy to maintain, the hair does not need to be manipulated or bothered as much.

Aids hydration

If you are struggling to retain hair moisture, protective hairstyles are what you need because it aids hydration. The issue of moisture escaping would be a thing of the past with protective hairstyles as the hair would retain moisture and stay healthy.

Helps with hair growth

Another great benefit is that protective hairstyles encourage hair growth as a result of all the amazing benefits already listed. Also, it helps with hair growth by reducing hair breakage. So if you are looking at growing your hair, do incorporate protective hairstyles into your haircare routine.

Allows you to wear stylish wigs

Protective hairstyles keep your hair safely and nicely tucked away and allow you to wear stylish wigs, which is nice. I like being able to switch up my looks as often as I like, and wigs allow me to do this easily and quickly.

Tips for developing a personal style

When it comes to developing a personal style, it’s important to focus on what works for you. It can take some time to develop a signature look, but with plenty of practice, and the right colours, pieces, and accessories, it is achievable. Here are some tips for developing a personal style:

Know your colours

We have colours that suit us better than others. If you don’t know your colours, the best way to find them is to try out pieces in different shades and see the colours that suit your natural colouring best. Your favourite colours may not be “your colours”, so play around with various colours to discover the best shades for your natural colouring.

Know your body shape

I have written extensively about knowing your body shape on Fashion and Style Police. You can catch up on some of the posts here and here. Knowing your body shape and what suits your shape best would help you stick to the right pieces that showcase your body in the right way.

Invest in quality items

Once you know your colours and body shape, the next step is to invest in timeless, quality items to create a capsule wardrobe. I always choose quality over quantity, so investing in quality classic items is a must because they are forever stylish and hang around for longer. A great place to start when it comes to investing in quality items is in the bag and shoes department, and then as the need arises and the bank balance allows, you can splurge on other areas.

Be unique and stay comfortable

A personal style should be unique and comfortable. There’s no point in developing a signature look that resembles that of your friend or favourite celebrity. For it to work and stand the test of time, your style needs to be all you. So take your time and discover what that entails to create your look.

Get inspired

I know I just said we should be unique and all, but sometimes, we may struggle to discover what our likes and dislikes are when it comes to fashion and style. So it’s okay to get inspiration from other outlets like fashion magazines, style blogs, and social media. As long as it is just inspiration, that’s fine! I get styling ideas from various sources, and these ideas inspire me to create my look.
