What is fashion and am I fashionable?

What is fashion? That can be defined in many different ways. I see fashion as modern/change, which isn’t surprising as the French word for fashion is La Mo, which is the short form of la modernité, which also means modernity. Fashion is what we see on the high street, the fashion magazines, the top designer stores, and on the runaway. It changes every season and to stay on top of fashion means to literally keep updating your wardrobe with every new collection that pops up. How possible is that especially now with all that we have going on?

Are we supposed to focus on fashion or style?

To be honest, I have never really been fashionable. Instead, I prefer having a capsule wardrobe that shows off my personal style. I stick to my personal style and not to the dictates of the never-ending fashion industry. Like many things, it takes a while to find your sweet spot but you know it once you find it. Being fashionable will clearly put many of us in debt, struggling to keep up with credit card payments and even store card payments. It amazes me every time when I am offered a store card for a fashion store. Why would I want to buy clothes on credit only for them to be out of season in a few months? That makes no sense. Now don’t get me wrong, I love looking good and I like to invest in my clothing and accessories, so I don’t have to keep shopping every few months. I also love spoiling myself and I have a lovely closet with more items I can count but I only shop for things I need. Going along with what is considered fashionable would be a waste.

How do you see fashion?

According to the editorial policy of Fashion Theory: The Journal of Dress, Body & Culture on Fashion History Love to Know Website, fashion is defined as “the cultural construction of the embodied identity.” Do you agree with this definition? How do you see fashion and would you call yourself fashionable?

Style Icon: Toni Tones

Hey fashion and style lovers! The style icon for this month is the beautiful Gbemi Anthonia Adefuye, known professionally as Toni Tones. For those who do not know, this stylish young lady is a Nigerian media personality, actress, and photographer. She has been on my radar for some time now and she is one of the few Nollywood actresses that I really like. I started paying attention to her after seeing her in King of Boys. Her acting was so impressive and the movie was so good. Since then, I have been a huge fan. I love her movies and her Instagram page keeps me very busy. It is filled with funny skits. This young woman is a bundle of talent.

Toni Tones’ style game is just out of this world. She knows what looks good on her and she slays it every time. I love her sense of fashion a lot! She is known for breaking necks whenever she steps on the red carpet. Her everyday look is also always on point.

If I was asked to describe Toni Tones’ personal style, I would call it chic, timeless, and very “Toni”. I love that she sticks to her own personal style. This style icon does not follow trends, she creates them and she makes it look so easy. She also has an amazing body and so everything she wears looks fantastic.

Add more vintage style to your wardrobe with these easy style tips

Are you desperate to add a touch of vintage style to your wardrobe? It’s easy to look back at the styles of fashion icons like Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, and Jane Mansfield and think that a white halter neck dress and perfectly coiffed hairdo will cut it. Sadly, it’s not that simple.

Vintage style means flawless elegance and it’s not easy to pull off. However, there are ways that you can add a touch of vintage style to your current wardrobe without looking like you’ve walked straight out of a fancy-dress shop. Read on for some simple vintage style advice!

Vera Wang Glasses Image

Glasses

The most effective way to emanate a vintage vibe is by using accessories. This means that if you wear glasses, you’re in luck! You’ll find a huge range of vintage style glasses available online. Vintage style glasses are certainly popular right now, and you can forget painfully heavy and bulky frames of yesteryear, as these days you can enjoy vintage style in absolute comfort.

Start shopping for vintage glasses online now and you can try hundreds of vintage styles virtually, from the comfort of your own home!

An A-line skirt

Unequivocally 50s! A-line skirts are the epitome of vintage style and they go with pretty much anything. This means that incorporating them into your current wardrobe is essential. The flattering cut of an A-line skirt means that it suits any body shape and type, meaning you’ll be full of confidence and vintage vibes no matter your shape or your age!

Add some pearls

Pearls ooze glamour and sophistication, but they’re also subtle and delicate. Working with simple accessories like a string of pearls means you can add vintage style to any outfit. Whether you’re heading to the office, for a coffee with the girls, or enjoying a night out with your S.O.

Try adding some vintage buttons

If you love sewing, then this one could be for you. If you want to mix eras and add a splash of vintage to your current shirts, blouses, and cardigans then consider replacing the buttons on your contemporary pieces with vintage ones. You’ll find buttons from eras gone by in haberdashery shops and even in online marketplaces. If you don’t know how to sew, there’s no better time to learn.

Rich fabrics are your friends

Stars of the silver screen didn’t wear polyester or cheap materials, they draped themselves in heavenly, luxurious fabrics. Silk, velvet, and satin were always the go-to fabrics on the red carpet and thankfully these days they don’t cost the earth. You don’t necessarily have to choose items of clothing in these richer materials. Shoes, handbags, and scarves can add a dash of sophisticated vintage to any modern outfit.

And finally, don’t overdo it!

It’s easy to try and replicate a whole vintage outfit. However, when it comes to fashion, less is often more. Adding a few vintage touches to your current wardrobe can add vintage luxury to any outfit! Keep it simple and experiment with different textures, fabrics, and colours.
