How to Dress for a Game of Golf

Golf is a sophisticated game that has many etiquettes players need to follow, from politeness and self-discipline to repairing pitch marks and replacing divots. Every golf club has its own set of rules but one rule that does not change is golf clothing. There are many spoken and unspoken dress code rules for golf, which can be vague or even confusing for beginners. To help you, here are some tips on how to dress for golf games

Tops

Most golfers prefer wearing the infamous polo-style shirts. They are your safest option and they are comfortable as well. You can either wear any polo or button-down you have or you can get a golf shirt. Golf shirts come a little longer than regular ones, which help them stay tucked in when you are swinging your club. Speaking of which, the top you are wearing HAS to be tucked in whichever bottom you have on. Additionally, do not get a shirt that is tight around your body as it can be a bit restrictive, get one that is of a loose fitting. One final thing concerning tops: never wear a t-shirt or a tank top to a golf court. It is considered inappropriate by most golf courses.

Pants and shorts

Pants and shorts are both acceptable for golf courses. They can be plaid, linen, cotton, khakis, capris or chino. Everything is acceptable as long as you avoid jeans, gym wear and cut-offs. In the cold weather, slacks are most golfers’ favorite option, especially if they are water resistant in case of any rain. Plus, whether you are wearing pants or shorts, do not forget to wear a belt or else you will be uncomfortable and lose concentration while playing.

Skirts and dresses

All of the aforementioned and the following tips apply to both men and women. In addition to them, there are some rules concerning dresses and skirts. Most clubs ask women to wear skirts or dress that are below their knees or maybe a little shorter. If you have a short tennis skirt, you can wear it with tights underneath it. Skorts and culottes are popular options among most female golf players because they are comfortable and practical. The length rule applies to dresses as well. Sport dresses are always acceptable but the safest option are polo dresses. Avoid sundresses and you are good to go.

Shoes and socks

Golf shoes are the best option for footwear because they are designed to be stable and comfortable. Some clubs require the shoes to have soft rubber spikes instead of metal ones underneath to protect the green. Sandals, boots and tennis shoes are not acceptable. Most courses accept sneakers and running shoes but they might not be the best choice, as they do not offer stability. When it comes to socks, the most common choices are low socks that are barely visible when you are wearing short bottoms. With long sacks and pants on the other hand, wear crew socks with neutral colors or you can match them with the color of your pants.
