Golf is a sophisticated game that has many etiquettes players need to follow, from politeness and self-discipline to repairing pitch marks and replacing divots. Every golf club has its own set of rules but one rule that does not change is golf clothing. There are many spoken and unspoken dress code rules for golf, which can be vague or even confusing for beginners. To help you, here are some tips on how to dress for golf games
Most golfers prefer wearing the infamous polo-style shirts. They are your safest option and they are comfortable as well. You can either wear any polo or button-down you have or you can get a golf shirt. Golf shirts come a little longer than regular ones, which help them stay tucked in when you are swinging your club. Speaking of which, the top you are wearing HAS to be tucked in whichever bottom you have on. Additionally, do not get a shirt that is tight around your body as it can be a bit restrictive, get one that is of a loose fitting. One final thing concerning tops: never wear a t-shirt or a tank top to a golf court. It is considered inappropriate by most golf courses.
Pants and shorts
Pants and shorts are both acceptable for golf courses. They can be plaid, linen, cotton, khakis, capris or chino. Everything is acceptable as long as you avoid jeans, gym wear and cut-offs. In the cold weather, slacks are most golfers’ favorite option, especially if they are water resistant in case of any rain. Plus, whether you are wearing pants or shorts, do not forget to wear a belt or else you will be uncomfortable and lose concentration while playing.
Skirts and dresses
All of the aforementioned and the following tips apply to both men and women. In addition to them, there are some rules concerning dresses and skirts. Most clubs ask women to wear skirts or dress that are below their knees or maybe a little shorter. If you have a short tennis skirt, you can wear it with tights underneath it. Skorts and culottes are popular options among most female golf players because they are comfortable and practical. The length rule applies to dresses as well. Sport dresses are always acceptable but the safest option are polo dresses. Avoid sundresses and you are good to go.
Shoes and socks
Golf shoes are the best option for footwear because they are designed to be stable and comfortable. Some clubs require the shoes to have soft rubber spikes instead of metal ones underneath to protect the green. Sandals, boots and tennis shoes are not acceptable. Most courses accept sneakers and running shoes but they might not be the best choice, as they do not offer stability. When it comes to socks, the most common choices are low socks that are barely visible when you are wearing short bottoms. With long sacks and pants on the other hand, wear crew socks with neutral colors or you can match them with the color of your pants.
- Contact the club you are playing at to check if they have specific rules for golf attires and colors
- Take a golf hat with you. It will keep the sun out of your eyes and let you concentrate on your game
- NEVER WEAR JEANS! EVER!
- Do not mix patterns. Wear one patterned item while the others are of solid colours
- Stay away from wearing the color green and all of its shade or else you will blend in with your surrounding green fields
- Also, stay away from loud flashy colors. Your game has to steal the show, not your clothes
- Avoid wearing heavy watches or jewelry. They might hinder your game
- Check the weather before your games and dress accordingly. Wear waterproof clothing for rainy days and clothes made of quick-dry fabrics when it is hot and humid.
There are a couple of things other that the appropriate style to look for when shopping for a golf attire, such as breathability, weather protection, comfort and functionality. Golf clothing by TheGolfSociety, Galvin Green, Callaway among others offer these qualities combined with fashionable styles.
What do you think of these tips?
I never knew there were dress code rules for golf! I have never been to play golf but this is a helpful guide for when I finally try it.
Interesting information. I don’t play golf, but I do watch a bit of it on T.V. I did not know that those attires are required, I just thought golfers only wanted to look “flashy.”
Great tips! I have never played golf and would have no idea what to wear at all! These are fab tips and ones I will bear in mind if ever I play!
Glad you like the tips. Thanks for stopping by.
I wouldn’t know where to start with a dress code for golfing so this is very handy in case I ever get the chance to go!
Glad you found the post handy. Thanks Elizabeth.
I don’t play golf, but it makes total sense that there are dress rules – like any other sports. Just because it takes place on a lawn doesn’t mean its not sports.
Exactly. Thanks Renata.
Now this is a great post and very informative. For me I loved the skirts and dresses, this should be a great fit for the game.
I wouldn’t have had a clue about dress codes for golf so thank you for this! I may be going later in the summer, to watch rather than play though!
Watching is fun too xx
Nice action shot at the end. I’ve never played golf (besides miniature), but if I did, I’d like to wear a Slayer shirt!
Nice. Thanks for reading.
Never knew that golf has a dress code. Nice shot at the end 🙂
Yes many are unaware.
For my daughter who plays golf, I let her wear colorful outfits. Even if she plays golf, she is still a girl so I think it’s fine to indulge her a bit. 😀
Yes it is 😊
Shirts and comfortable shorts are so very essential. Need to be able to twist around and get in somewhat awkward positions out on the course.
Yes they are.
Ha! I hate golf BUT my husband works for 3 golf courses in an administrative capacity, so this may come in handy some day!

Sometimes wearing louder clothes is the best way to distract from a bad game! No doubt this will be helpful to beginners. The more people we get to play this game, the better!
I agree 😊
