Is 2017 the Year of the Skirt?
One of the best things about fashion blogging is that there is always something new to write about. The fashion world never stands still. There are always new trends and styles to enjoy, and 2017 is no different. It is already turning out to be an interesting year. This is because, this year, many designers have radically changed their approach to women´s fashion.
Gone are the muted palette and the tight-fitting style of trousers, blouses, and dresses we have grown used to over the past few years. Brighter, loser clothes are starting to appear on the catwalks and in the shops, as designers start to change direction.
For the past few years, dresses have dominated, but that is definitely changing. It is clear that skirts and tops are set to be the go-to combination. As you can see on this page, there are a lot of different cuts to choose between.
Pleat skirts
When looking at a womens skirt the biggest trend currently is pleated skirts. These long, full, pleated skirts are popping up everywhere. Even Beyoncé has been seen wearing one, so you know this is a trend that is going to last. They are being worn in lots of different ways. A lot of women are pairing them with a generously cut top that is tucked into the waistband and pulled back out slightly to create a soft look that works well with this type of skirt.
Full maxi skirts
The maxi cut is still with us, but instead of dresses, it is skirts, for 2017. Most are full and made of soft, relatively heavy fabrics like jerseys, so they may not be suitable for wearing on really hot days, but they are definitely going to feature in a lot of women´s wardrobes.
Tailored skirts
At the other end of the spectrum are tight-fitting pencil and tube skirts. They come in a range of lengths.
Naturally, most pencil skirts finish either just above or just below the knee. However, the tube skirts come in a wide range of lengths including some that end midway down the calf.
Many designers are offering them in a range of elasticised fabrics, which helps to create a cleaner, slightly flatter silhouette. If you like a smooth, uninterrupted line, look for pull-on versions, which do not have zips built-in. Naturally, most of these are made of some sort of stretch fabric. They not only look good they are also, typically, very comfortable to wear.
Ultra casual skirts
For those of you who want to keep things casual, button-through denim skirts are a good option. They look good whether you are wearing a t-shirt or a casual shirt. If you prefer a more tailored look, a chino style pencil, or straight skirt is a good choice. They look good whether you wear them with sandals or a pair of ankle boots, on a cooler day.
For some of us wearing a skirt is going to take some getting used to, because they have not been popular for many years. However, they actually look great, so the next time you go shopping it is really worth trying a few on.
What do you think of the skirt craze?
I like skirts! You can interchange how you wear them. I like the stretch skirts that I can wear with leggings.
I also like the elasticated waist skirt for comfort. I love my fashion however it also has to be comfortable.
I have quite a few Joe Brown’s skirts as I love there quirky stand out colours
Yea Joe Brown’s skirts are pretty.
Skirts are not something I wear often in the UK but now that we’re moving to a warmer climate I think I’ll be in them alot more. Although Denim skirts do not suit me. Tried one on last week and it looked awful on me!
I am not a fan of denim skirts anymore either.
I LOVE skirts, they make me feel so feminine, I normally wear them in summer
Yea me too.
I love skirts, I have a few and can not wait to wear them. I have chucked all my old Winter tights away so I need to wait a few more weeks until the weather has warmed up. Love your skirt, Stella 🙂
Thanks Claire.
I love the look of the pleated skirts, but they don’t suit me so well. I generally stick to denim skirts, with black tights and DMs or Converse!
Oh good you know what suits you already!
I love skirts SO much and am thrilled to see them popping up everywhere. Loved this post — it made me want to run out and shop for skirts!

I rarely wear skirts, I’m more of a jeans girl. As the weather gets warmer I do kinda have to switch things up a bit though!
Yea I wear more jeans than skirts too.
Oo I hope so – I love midi skirts because they cover enough of my legs up, but I still feel summery in them 🙂
