Is 2017 the Year of the Skirt

Is 2017 the Year of the Skirt?

One of the best things about fashion blogging is that there is always something new to write about. The fashion world never stands still. There are always new trends and styles to enjoy, and 2017 is no different. It is already turning out to be an interesting year. This is because, this year, many designers have radically changed their approach to women´s fashion.

Gone are the muted palette and the tight-fitting style of trousers, blouses and dresses we have grown used to over the past few years. Brighter, loser clothes are starting to appear on the catwalks and in the shops, as designers start to change direction.

For the past few years, dresses have dominated, but that is definitely changing. It is clear that skirts and tops are set to be the go-to combination. As you can see on this page, there are a lot of different cuts to choose between.

Pleat skirts

The biggest trend is accordion pleat skirts. These long, full pleated skirts are popping up everywhere. Even Beyoncé has been seen wearing one, so you know this is a trend that is going to last. They are being worn in lots of different ways. A lot of women are pairing them with a generously cut top that is tucked into the waistband and pulled back out slightly to create a soft look that works well with this type of skirt.

Full maxi skirts

The maxi cut is still with us, but instead of dresses it is skirts, for 2017. Most are full and made of soft, relatively heavy fabrics like jersey, so they may not be suitable for wearing on really hot days, but they are definitely going to feature in a lot of women´s wardrobes.

Tailored skirts

At the other end of the spectrum are tight-fitting pencil and tube skirts. They come in a range of lengths.

Naturally, most of the pencil skirts finish either just above or just below the knee. However, the tube skirts come in a wide range of lengths including some that end midway down the calf.

Many designers are offering them in a range of elasticised fabrics, which helps to create a cleaner, slightly flatter silhouette. If you like a smooth, un-interrupted line, look for pull on versions, which do not have zips built-in. Naturally, most of these are made of some sort of stretch fabric. They not only look good they are also, typically, very comfortable to wear.

Ultra casual skirts

For those of you who want to keep things casual, button through denim skirts are a good option. They look good whether you are wearing a t-shirt or a casual shirt. If you prefer a more tailored look, a chino style pencil, or straight skirt is a good choice. They look good whether you wear them with sandals or a pair of ankle boots, on a cooler day.

For some of us wearing a skirt is going to take some getting used to, because they have not been popular for many years. However, they actually look great, so the next time you go shopping it is really worth trying a few on.

What do you think of the skirt craze?

Hey fashion lovers! Since we are still fresh in the new year, I thought we should chat about fashion mistakes to avoid this 2017. Because even the best and the most stylish fashionistas can make poor style choices sometimes.

Wrong Sizing

So many реорlе get their sizing so wrоng. You need to ensure you buy the right size of сlоthing. If thе сlоthing doesn’t fit, don’t buy it. And if you have bought it already, don’t wear it.

If уоu аrе losing weight, make ѕurе you buу сlоthеѕ thаt fit your new size or hold off shopping until you are done with the weight loss. When I am in between sizes, or trying to lose weight, I like to shop for dresses online, simply because I get better bargains and options, and dresses are easier to rock when I am in between sizes. Whеn buуing clothes, mаkе ѕurе you сhесk the ѕizing and ensure you get your right size for the store. Sizes mean different things in different stores and countries.

Wrinkled Clothes

You should never step out of your house lооking wrinkled! I hate ironing but I hate looking wrinkled a lot more, so I make sure my clothes are well ironed.

Hеrе iѕ a ԛuiсk tiр: if уоu want to dесrеаѕе the timе it tаkеѕ to irоn уоur сlоthеѕ, hang thеm uр оnсе уоu hаvе worn them, so they are not wrinkled when next you need to wear them.

Tоo Many Cоlоurѕ

Wеаring toо mаnу different colours will ruin your overall look. When I say too many, I mean more than 3 colours. Kеер уоur colouring ѕimрle by sticking to at least 1 bright colour, and 2 minimal colours at the most, except you are going for a colour blocking look.

Viѕiblе Pаntу and Brа Linе

Contrary to рорulаr bеliеf, it iѕ not ѕеxу оr attractive tо hаvе a viѕiblе panty or bra linе. Always wear lingеriе thаt ѕuits what you have on.

Choosing Wrong Designs

Each уеаr, fashion designers bombard us with new pieces and accessories in various designs. However many оf the high fаѕhiоn designs do not ѕuit thе regular wоmеn. Always opt for designs that suit your body shape and personality.

We all know that Mаxi drеѕѕеѕ wеrе оnсе a trend, but they аrе also now a wаrdrоbе ѕtарlе, and they аrе hеrе tо ѕtау. Every wardrobe should have a few maxi dresses. They are effortless, vеrѕаtilе аnd suits аll ѕhареѕ and ѕizеѕ, with no effort rеԛuirеd at all! It is also very easy to shop for dresses online, which is an added plus for me, you all know how much I love my online shopping, I would be lost without it.

Why is Fashion So Obsessed with the Old Trends

Chichi London Dress Picture

I always keep an eye out for new trends in fashion. Compared to the styles that were available since the time I’ve been running Fashion & Style Police, what is termed “fashionable” has evolved so much. Despite the remarkable changes in fashion, I couldn’t help but notice how old trends and styles kept coming back.
History does have a way of repeating itself and fashion was not left out in this. But why? Aren’t we in the modern age? Why do old trends have to creep into the fashion scene and on the runaways again and again? Don’t get me wrong! I do love the baby doll dress from the 60s which inspired the empire waists and the denim jackets, crop tops and animal prints from the 80s. Even the most loved skinny jeans are an evidence of the presence of old trends in today’s fashion. What I want to know is why fashion keeps “borrowing” from the past and doesn’t seem to move forward.
So with some research, observation and plenty of deep thinking, I’ve been able to get some answers. I must warn you that what you will read will make you love, appreciate and respect fashion a little more. Here are some reasons why fashion is so obsessed with old trends:
Reason #1: Fashion designers look to the past as source of inspiration.
How does a majority of the fashion styles come to life if not for the fashion designers? This was a big revelation to me. Fashion designers draw inspiration from various sources: life, nature or events. But if you want to create something new, you need to go back in time to see what others have done and find ways you can “borrow” or improve on their designs. Pretty smart, don’t you think?
Reason #2: Some old trends can easily fit the present times and still look good.
The beauty about fashion is that there are endless possibilities to how you can combine outfits together to give you a new look. Have you put on a denim jacket and love the look on you? No matter how old their origins, some of those pieces are timeless. They look so good that you feel that it’s part of present time.
I love mixing and matching various pieces and I have discovered several ways old pieces work. There’s this versatility behind each piece. They work for pretty much anyone and any era.
Reason #3: To show appreciation for the originality of the past.
What better way to show tribute to the time than by wearing the clothes that reflect that period?
The fashion trends of the past find their way to the future when people see themselves identify with the culture, attitude or class of the past. For example, wearing leather jackets to represent the cool but tough biker look or the black dress adorned with long white pearl beads to allude to the classiness of the 1960s. The old trends were like a voice to give expression to the attitude, culture and class we still feel today. Impressive, isn’t it?
