Know your colours

We have colours that suit us better than others. If you don’t know your colours, the best way to find them is to try out pieces in different shades and see the colours that suit your natural colouring best. Your favourite colours may not be “your colours”, so play around with various colours to discover the best shades for your natural colouring.

Know your body shape

I have written extensively about knowing your body shape on Fashion and Style Police. You can catch up on some of the posts here and here. Knowing your body shape and what suits your shape best would help you stick to the right pieces that showcase your body in the right way.

Invest in quality items

Once you know your colours and body shape, the next step is to invest in timeless, quality items to create a capsule wardrobe. I always choose quality over quantity, so investing in quality classic items is a must because they are forever stylish and hang around for longer. A great place to start when it comes to investing in quality items is in the bag and shoes department, and then as the need arises and the bank balance allows, you can splurge on other areas.

Be unique and stay comfortable

A personal style should be unique and comfortable. There’s no point in developing a signature look that resembles that of your friend or favourite celebrity. For it to work and stand the test of time, your style needs to be all you. So take your time and discover what that entails to create your look.

Get inspired

I know I just said we should be unique and all, but sometimes, we may struggle to discover what our likes and dislikes are when it comes to fashion and style. So it’s okay to get inspiration from other outlets like fashion magazines, style blogs, and social media. As long as it is just inspiration, that’s fine! I get styling ideas from various sources, and these ideas inspire me to create my look.

Here are some tips to help you stay stylish on a budget –

Keep your wardrobe uncluttered

This is one tip that is not as popular, but keeping your wardrobe uncluttered helps your clothes breathe, and allows you to easily shop your closet and spot any gaps. I recently did a massive declutter of my wardrobe and being able to get rid of unloved items felt so good. It also allowed me to really see spot gaps that needed filling for the spring months. I realised I didn’t really have springy pieces that were stylish and comfortable enough to work from home in. If you want to stay stylish on a budget, the first step is to declutter and see what you are really working wit

Create or maintain a capsule wardrobe

Having a capsule wardrobe allows you have a fab collection of pieces and accessories that embody your personal style, and this helps you create various looks with minimal effort. Apart from the fact that having a capsule wardrobe can be seriously stylish, it also makes fashion shopping a lot more affordable, as you would find that you don’t have to shop so often, and you would get more wear out of every item.

Look out for sales

Before you go shopping, look out for which stores have items on sale. If none, consider holding on until you can get the item for a cheaper price. With the rise in cost for pretty much everything, it is important to avoid impulse buying, and shop more smartly. I love buying items on sale that I would have bought at full price. It feels to shop and save money at the same time.

Mix high-end with high street pieces

This is one of my favourite style on a budget tip. Mixing high-end pieces with high street pieces is a smart way to style on a budget. Styling a River Island or NEXT dress with a Gucci handbag and Stella McCartney heels is super cool.

2.   Dress for you

Styling is an entirely personal journey. It’s totally about what works for you. You should not be pressured by the fact that everyone is dressing some type of way. Go for outfits that suit your body type and resonate with your personal style.

If you’re still confused about what works for you, you can find inspirations on Pinterest and from quality fashion blogs, with styles of women with your body type. You’d surely find something that resonates with you.

3.   Prioritise quality over quantity

Investing in your style is not just about having lots of items in your wardrobe.  Once you’ve identified your style, streamline your shopping lists to high quality and classic pieces you love and that would elevate your look. Focus on spending the majority of your budget on high quality items that you’d be comfortable wearing every time.

Having fewer high quality items that you love would give you more outfit options. It pays to spend a bit more on high quality pieces to help create your signature style.

4.   Organise your Closet

Instead of just staking your clothes in your wardrobe, opt for organising your wardrobe in a way that makes it easy for you to see all you have and shop your closet effortlessly. This would ensure that everything in your closet is visible and useful.

A great way to start is by arranging your outfits by item types. Then go on to separate casual from dressy outfits. That way, you can see the entire closet easily, and spot the gaps that need filling.

5.   Don’t go overboard with trends

One thing about trends is that they are temporary. The last thing you would want to do is splurge on styles that would fade away very quickly.

If you have a shopping budget, spend 80% on your basics and 20% on trends. Also, don’t be pressured into buying trendy outfits. Stay true to your personal style by only buying pieces that suit your signature look.

6.   Declutter your wardrobe

If you have never thought about decluttering your wardrobe, now is the best time to do it. You would essentially be getting rid of items you don’t need.

Building a personal style is all about you, what you love and what you’re comfortable with. The tips listed would help ensure your style is unique, organised and personal.
