Where I Get Inspiration for Blog Posts

I have been blogging on Fashion and Style Police for over 6 years now, and it has been an amazing experience. Many people wonder how I manage to run a blog for this long and publish new posts regularly. I think it comes down to my genuine love for writing. Writing is my creative outlet and my happy place. I can’t see myself not writing. It is not a chore for me at all, and that explains how I do it. Another question I get a lot is where I get my inspiration for my blog posts. I see inspiration everywhere and I tap into it.

My inspiration comes from different places – my children, books, blogs, social media, tv series/movies, magazines, in life settings, and everywhere in between.

Where I Get Inspiration for Blog Posts

The Kiddies

I get a lot of inspiration from my twins. They keep me very busy and I enjoy watching them explore the world around them. They give me inspiration for my blog posts especially posts for Kids Section Category on here. It is amazing to see the world through their eyes and I am enjoying every bit of parenting them, even when they make me repeat myself every minute.

Reading Books

Reading is my favourite thing to do. I love reading non fiction books on my Amazon Kindle and I am currently on a read a book a week challenge. I have read 12 books already this year, and I get a lot of inspiration from the books I read. The book I have just finished is A Pocketful of Holes and Dreamsย by Jeff Pearce. I finished reading it yesterday and I gained a lot of insight from the book.

Social Media

Social media is full of inspiration. I learn something new everyday on my social media platforms. It does feel like information overload sometimes, but if you mute the noise, you get a thing or 2 from them. Social media itself is an inspiration. All the platforms are very inspiring in their own way.

Other Blogs

Other blogs inspire me. I enjoy reading different types of blogs, from fashion and beauty blogs, to parenting and travel. Lifestyle blogs are my favourite because the posts vary and they cover a variety of topics. I can find myself scrolling some blogs for hours. It is amazing how creative bloggers are. One of my favourite Lifestyle Blogs from the day I stared blogging until now is Forever Amber. She covers all various topics and I find her writing style and photography amazing.

Magazines

To be honest, I hardly read magazines these days. Back in the day, I read a couple of magazines each month, from Cosmo to Glamour. But nowadays I only find myself reading my Boots free magazine. Maybe because I am forever reading a book, and there is no time to actually a magazine. But I still get many ideas from reading the only magazine I do read. Magazines are full of inspiration.

TV Series/Movies

I am not usually a TV person, but I do enjoy watching a couple of TV series like Call the Midwife, Married to Medicine, Real Housewives of Atlanta, The Mummy Diaries, and many more. Watching movies on Netflix/Amazon Prime is another way I unwind in the evenings, and I get inspiration from what I watch.

In Real Life

Inspiration is everywhere I look. I am inspired everyday as soon as I set out. It could me spotting a lovely outfit, or a well made up face. I could get inspired from a conversation I am drawn into or I overhear. It could be anything really.

There is a thin line between getting inspiration from someone/something and copying. Every creative should be aware of this invisible line and be sure not to go over it.

Blogging Tips – How to Streamline your Blog Content Creation

Blogging is a lot of work. I have been blogging for close to 6 years now and it gets harder the more you blog. If you plan to take your blog from a hobby to a business, then you have to be prepared to do the work. I work pretty much everyday on one blog related job or the other. If I am not writing or articles blog posts, I am taking and editing photos, or scheduling social media posts.

There is always something to do when you work from home and run a business. It is tricky to separate home life from work life because it all happens in the same place. And my team are my family members but it works great for us. We won’t have it any other way.

You can’t succeed as a content creator if you don’t create content regularly. A good way to stay on top of your content creation as a blogger is to streamline your content. Here are ways you can go about doing that.

Have a blogging schedule

I blog pretty much everyday, so that is my schedule. Sometimes, I am unable to blog for some days when life gets in the way which is the same for all of us. Having said that, it works better when your readers know when to expect a new blog post. Having a blogging schedule is a great way to grow your readership and stay ahead of the game.

Get a blogging journal

Blogging journals are great for writing down ideas and anything related to your blog. I always have mine on me for whenever inspiration strikes. If I am unable to get to my journal, I make use of my iPhone notepad. Have a list of blog post ideas in a journal means you always have fresh ideas for your blog posts.

Determine the objective of your content

Before you start writing your posts, it makes sense to determine the objective of the blog post. Once you have that outlined, then the rest of the content would follow naturally. Having a clear objective of your content means you have a good title, relevant focus keyword and additional keywords all good to go. That way the blog post would be interesting to read and easy to find on search engines.

Keep writing

I write a post pretty much everyday. Sometimes I write about 2/3 posts a day, depending on deadlines and what campaigns I am working on. Writing everyday has helped me become a better writer. And my number 1 blogging tip to anyone thinking of turning their blog to a business, is to read and write as many times as possible everyday.

When it comes to streamlining your blog content creation, the more you write, the more blog posts you would have in your draft. So that means you would always have posts ready to be published even on days when you are unable to write.

How do you streamline your blog content creation? Do you have any tips to share?

Running your blog as a business

Many people are gobsmacked when I tell them I earn a full-time living wage from Fashion and Style Police. It makes no sense to them how I can earn money writing on this blog. They wonder how it can be possible to earn anything tangible as a blogger working from home. Well, if you are one of these people struggling to understand how bloggers make money, then you are on the right blog. It is very possible to make good money from your blog. I know this because I am one of those bloggers fortunate enough to make money from blogging.

In other to make money as a blogger, you have to run your blog as a business. Running your blog as a business means you have to publish quality articles on the regular. It also means you have to charge the right prices when approached by brands and PRs. So how do you go about these? Let’s start with charging the right fees first.

Mind on the money

Now this media kit above is an old kit but it still works. Every blogger should have a media kit that clearly outlines what services you offer and why brands should work with you. I have had a few brands ask for a media kit so it is quite handy to have. You could also include your rates on your media kit if you wish but I rather not as my fees vary from campaign to campaign.

So what should you be charging? That is a question only you can answer. No one else can tell you what to charge because our circumstances all vary. I always have a figure I want to earn every month in my head and that figure guides what I charge every brand. Also, I have a minimum fee in my head that I can’t go below. This helps me get rid of time wasters that want to pay me $20 for a job worth $200. Knowing what to charge happens once you know your worth. It takes time but if you have a business mindset, you would get there quicker than others.

Ignore your competition

I know this goes against everything we have been taught by the business gurus but trust me on this one. When it comes to blogging, variety is truly the spice of life. You don’t want to be like any other blogger but yourself if you intend to turn your blog into a business. You have to stand out from the rest of the crowd and you can only do so if you ignore your competition and focus on your focus.

Ignoring your competition means focusing on publishing quality content on your blog and social media platforms. It means following like minds and making friends with the bloggers you get on so you are not isolated. But it also means you don’t spend the whole day stalking your blogger role models on Instagram or Twitter, and trying to be them. It means not copying their fashion sense or writing style. It means being true to yourself. You can get inspiration from those in your niche you admire and stay in your lane at the same time!

Focus on the content

Content is king, let no one deceive you. Everything else works on the back of good content. If your content is not up to scratch, your dreams of making money from your blog may never become a reality. What makes a content good? Good content to me informs, educates or entertains. It is written in good clear English, with a captivating writing tone. Good content has great photography and usually gets people talking.
