Back to Basics: How to Find the Perfect Skincare Routine for Your Skin Type

Building a solid skincare routine is one of the best things you can do to keep your skin healthy, radiant, and thriving.
That said, with the sheer volume of beauty advice available online, it is easy to feel completely overwhelmed. Skincare is never a one-size-fits-all journey; tips that work wonders for one person might cause irritation or breakouts for another. That is why it is so important to deeply understand your unique skin type before diving into new products and routines. Once you know exactly what your skin needs, tailoring your regime becomes incredibly simple. If you are wondering how to kickstart your beauty routine the right way, here are some essential skincare steps to explore today.

Step 1: Identify Your Unique Skin Type
Before buying any new products, you need to know what you are working with. Wash your face with a gentle cleanser, leave it bare for an hour, and look in the mirror. If your skin looks shiny all over, you have oily skin. If it feels tight and flaky, it is dry. Shiny only in your T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) means you are combination, while zero irritation or shine means you have a normal skin type.
Step 2: Stick to a Gentle Double Cleanse
Cleansing is the foundation of healthy skin, especially in the evening. Start with an oil-based cleanser or micellar water to break down stubborn makeup, sunscreen, and daily pollution. Follow it up with a gentle, water-based foaming or hydrating cleanser to actually clean the skin surface. This ensures your pores stay completely clear without stripping away your skin’s natural, protective oils.
Step 3: Layer Your Products from Thinnest to Thickest
To make sure your skincare actually works, you need to apply it in the correct order so everything absorbs properly. The golden rule is to always go from the thinnest texture to the thickest texture. Start with your watery toners and essences, follow up with your targeted serums, lock it all in with your favorite moisturiser, and always finish with oil or sunscreen during the day.
Step 4: Never Skip the Moisturiser
Whether your skin is bone-dry or incredibly oily, moisturiser is completely non-negotiable. Oily skin often overproduces oil because it is actually dehydrated underneath and trying to compensate. Choose a lightweight, oil-free gel moisturiser if you are prone to shine, or a rich, ceramide-packed cream if you suffer from dryness, to keep your skin barrier strong and balanced.
Step 5: Patch Test Every Single New Product
It is incredibly tempting to slather a new, exciting product all over your face the second you buy it, but patience is key. Always patch-test a small amount of product on your inner arm or just under your jawline for 24 to 48 hours. This simple step ensures you don’t end up dealing with a full-face allergic reaction, breakout, or chemical irritation from an incompatible ingredient.

Listen to Your Skin
At the end of the day, achieving a healthy, glowing complexion isn’t about buying the most expensive products or following a complicated 10-step viral trend. It is simply about listening to your skin, understanding its unique needs, and staying consistent with the basics. Be patient with your progress, give new routines a few weeks to show results, and treat your skin with the kindness it deserves!

Lifestyle tips for Glowing Skin

Finding the right skincare can feel like a game in a way. As we age, our skin changes, and skincare products that used to work so well may no longer be the right fit. To find the  right skincare products, you may have to test a good few. I have played around with a few skincare brands in the last few years. Some have been a better fit than others but what I noticed with my skin was, at first the new skincare products would work amazingly well, at least for the first couple of weeks, and then they would stop being as effective.

When it comes to lifestyle changes to make for glowing skin, I have had to learn when it comes to skincare, and I am still learning, but I have been able to pick up some up great lifestyle tips for glowing skin in my quest. Here are three of my favourite skincare tips –

Use a gentle facial cleanser twice a day

Washing your face twice a day with a gentle facial cleanser is the first step in any skincare routine. You want to pick the right facial cleanser for your skin type so it doesn’t dry out your face or cause any breakouts. I have used a few cleansers and I have found that the more gentle the facial cleanser, the better it is for my skin. Vegan formulas are the only skincare products I use, so the gentle facial cleanser has to be Vegan friendly for me to try it.

Exfoliate at least once a week

When it comes to exfoliating, I usually aim for once a week. I know many beauty pros recommend exfoliating three times or more a week, but that sounds like a lot. My skin is quite sensitive and can be prone to breakouts sometimes, so I am always really careful with skincare treatments. Exfoliating more than once may be right for your skin but just be careful not to over exfoliate so as not to damage your natural skin barrier.

Use a toner twice a day

Using a toner every time you cleanse is important. Toners keep the skin hydrated and also aid the absorption of facial creams, moisturisers and serums. As always, I opt for toners with Vegan formula. I have recently discovered some amazing Vegan skncare products, and I will be sharing my thoughts on them soon.

Do you have any Vegan skincare brands you are into?
