My Personal Injury Story

I have decided to share a bit more of my personal life in a new blog series called – True Stories. It would be about my life experiences in general. I plan to run this blog series every month at least so wish me luck. Here is my first of many to come, it is my personal injury story.

I was involved in a traffic accident a while ago. Myself and 2 other family members were on our way to a wedding when it happened. We came down from Cheshire to London for the wedding, and we were heading down to the venue when the accident took place. We slowed down, approaching a traffic light, and the car behind slammed right into us, and we in turn slammed into the car in front. It was a horrible experience. Our car was a complete right off and it was a miracle we got out without physical cuts and wounds.

We had to wait for the police to come assess the accident. After that was done, we exchanged insurance details and contact information. We also took as many photographs as we could.

We obviously couldn’t attend the wedding in our state. We had to wait for the recovery team to come to our rescue and that took forever. We were finally rescued and given a lift back to our hotel.

I was just in shock for the entire day, I couldn’t believe what happened. We had big plans that day but it was taken out of our hands and completely messed up.

The next day, we found it extremely hard to get up in the morning, we were in severe pains, especially the driver of our car, so we had to call the ambulance. After examining us, we discovered we were suffering from a condition called Whiplash – a type of neck injury caused by sudden movement of the head forwards, backwards or sideways, as a result of the accident, and we were given pain killers.

After a few days, we were finally able to get back home, but we were still experiencing severe pains. We had already spoken with our insurance company and the investigation process had started. But we were still undecided about making a claim for personal injuries.

I personally didn’t want to make a claim at first because of the whole stigma attached to it. Many people see you as greedy for making a personal claim but then I realised, I had lost money and time I would never get back. I was still experiencing severe pains in my body and it was affecting the quality of my life. I was under a lot of stress after the accident as anyone would imagine. I could not go to work for weeks and I also developed a condition called Amaxophobia – the fear of being a passenger, which has made commuting very hard. I still panic whenever the car I am in approaching a traffic light.

So why should I suffer for the results of an accident that was not my fault? Or the fault of our driver? Asking myself those questions encouraged me to make my personal injury claim and I am glad I did. It took months for the claim to go through. I had to have medical examinations during the time, and send a lot of documentation back and forth, not to talk of the many phone calls and emails. It was incredibly stressful, but it finally went through so it was worth the wait and the stress at the end of the day.

My advice to anyone considering a personal injury claim is to go for it as soon as possible. I wasted time over thinking and that made my process longer. Also, make sure you file your claim through a reputable personal injury law firm so your claim goes as smoothly as possible.

Have you ever been involved in a traffic accident? Did you make a personal injury claim?

  1. How awful. So glad to hear that none of you had any major injuries. Yes, my brother and I were in a car accident years ago, when we were both Uni students. I don’t really remember much about it anymore except waking up in the hospital! Luckily, none of us had any major injuries too.

  2. Yes I was with the ex going back to 1999. It was awful. Though I suffered no physical injuries having already suffering from depression and the threads it just made everything worse. I was terrified of being in the car with traffic on the road.

A few weeks later we had to go to a funeral which was 100 miles away. I was a nervous wreck on the motorway. I was terrified everytime a car came neat us. As for the lorries well you can imagine.

I did get psychological damages. We also got some for my daughter who was in the back whose jaw hit against the back seat. She had just had a new brace fitted that day that was damaged through it. We were all wearing seat belts thank goodness.

Glad your OK Stella. Do right to claim. I have had other incidences in my life I could have claimed for but haven’t for various reasons. I think it’d weighing up each circumstance as to what’s right to do

Looking forward to reading your.life experience blog too

  3. Oh no that is absolutely horrible! Especially as you were on your way to a wedding when it was supposed to be a joyous day. I’ve also been in a car accident and it is a shock to the system. It happens so quickly! I hope you’ve recovered from the pains as a result of the accident.

  4. I am one of the lucky ones who have never been in an accident. Knock on wood.

But I do understand that negativity attached to filing a personal injury claim. I am sorry that you had to go through such a negative ordeal, but glad that all worked out for you. x

  5. Sorry to hear about this ..we had a similar experience when I was 20 weeks pregnant and someone crashed into us. We tried to make a claim against the person who was uninsured but we never got a penny from him. I was just happy my baby was safe.

  6. Oh my goodness, I am sure that did put a damper on your plans. My parents experienced something similar a few years back and they both came out with minor injuries.

  7. I was involved in a car accident while pregnant with my youngest daughter and I did make a claim as it was already a high risk pregnancy and I ended up needing a lot of extra scans, and I had horrific whiplash. I had 18 months of physio therapy ,saw an orthapeidic surgeon and spent a lot of time, and money, travelling back and forth to hospitals. In the end it was settled with a personal claim agency and I was given a sum of money that although didn’t really make up for the fact I had been through so much, was adequate to give us a nice holiday!

  8. I hope you are feeling better now. Yes I have been in two accidents, one when I was younger, and again when I was eighteen. I don’t know if my mom filed an accident claim back then. I did file an injury claim the second time. I suffered whiplash, and a broken ankle. I still have aches and pains from time to time, and my ankle still bothers me, I am 35 years old now. I was scared for a long time being in the passenger seat, and I didn’t drive for years after the accident.

  9. I have never had an accident thank goodness. But we did slightly hit a car some years back, it was our fault this time around with no injuries and he made a claim.
