Why We Need Our Beauty Sleep

We all love to sleep. I guess that’s no secret, right? After a tiring day we long for a well-deserved sleep. There’s nothing as rewarding as a good night’s rest. Actually it is recommended we have between 7-9 hours of sleep to experience the benefits, adequate sleep has to offer.
Lack of sleep can cause a lot of negative effects such as obesity, low-level of concentration, mood swings and stress. It can also make you more prone to medical conditions like diabetes and heart attacks. And it also affects the way we look. We all need our beauty sleep to keep us looking good but some days are harder than others, and the much-needed beauty sleep seems elusive. Sleep aid products such as the Gold Bee wellness range are can be good for helping you drift off, but there are still lots of things that can distract us from a good night’s sleep.

For those of us that work from home, and have children to cater to, having the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep is a dream. I go to bed past midnight almost every day, and I am usually up around 6am, so I know I do not get the recommended amount of sleep on most days, but I am working on it.

Here are some beauty benefits of getting the right amount of sleep so we can ALL remember why it is important and stop ourselves from bingeing on the new Netflix series, and get some sleep instead:

1.    Radiant skin tone
Lack of sleep makes our skin look dull. This is because blood doesn’t circulate efficiently when we are up and about. The tiny blood vessels called capillaries tighten preventing nutrients from flowing easily to the skin including your scalp.

When you sleep lying flat, there’s an improvement in circulation of blood to your face. This increased circulation of blood gives your skin a lovely healthy glow.

2.    Smooth skin
When we sleep, the muscles in our face relax. The lines caused by the tensing of our facial muscles smoothen out because the facial muscles are relaxed.

3.    Reverses signs of ageing
Reducing your hours of sleep with as low as 2-3 hours can cause your face to wrinkle. Adequate sleep brings back the youthful skin. While you sleep, your body produces collagen. Collagen pumps up the skin which helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

4.    Healthy-looking skin
Adequate sleep reduces the puffiness under our eyes and the increased blood flow during those 7-9 hours of sleep helps minimize dark circles. When we don’t have enough sleep, our eyes become red and under our eyes look puffy. Yawning due to lack of sleep makes our eyes water which then causes swelling and puffiness under the eyes.
Lack of sleep also causes dark circles around our eyes. When we don’t sleep, blood circulation decreases and the blood collects under eyes. The thin skin under the eye makes this visible in form of dark circles.

5.    Reduces acne
When you sleep, you feel relaxed and adequate sleep makes you feel fresh and improves your mood. Lack of sleep makes your body release the stress hormone called cortisol. When cortisol is released, it makes sebaceous glands produce more oil which promotes breakouts.

With these benefits, I think I will need to make an adjustment to my daily routine. Easier to say though. As a freelancer, I work long hours, and those hours are usually at night when the kids are in bed, but lets see how my new adjustment goes. I will be filling you guys in as always.

Do you struggle to get the recommended daily amount of sleep? How do you deal with it?

The Benefits of Drinking Water

Outfit Post Image

Water is important for the normal functioning of the human body. In fact, the body is made up of about 75% water, the brain up to 90%, the blood 80%, the skin 64% and the liver 96% of water. That’s amazing! No wonder some people refer to water as life.

The recommended amount of water we should take daily is 8 8-ounce glasses of water, which is equal to about 2 litres or half a gallon of water.  But I hardly drink half of that. I have always struggled with drinking the recommended daily amount of water. The AcquaBlend Water Bottles I reviewed some weeks ago, help me drink more water, but I still need to drink a lot more.

Since water is so important, I thought I should share with you the benefits of drinking the required amount of water.  Starting from beauty benefits all the way down to general well-being benefits. Maybe these benefits will help motivate us, lol.

1.  Gives a Healthy Complexion and Even Skin Tone
Low water intake makes the skin look very dull. Trust me I know. On the days when I manage to drink 2 litres of water, I can see a different in my skin tone. Drinking adequate amount of water restores skin moisture which enhances your complexion, making it look soft and supple, and gives your skin a lovely glow. Drinking water and having enough sleep are the best beauty tips ever!

2.    Combats Acne and Other Skin Disorders
A major cause of acne is oil clogged in the pores of your skin. Drinking water decreases the concentration of oil on the skin. It also flushes out the toxins that can lead to other skin disorders out of your body.

3.    Reduces Signs of Aging
Drinking water increases elasticity by plumping up your skin. This makes your skin less likely to create wrinkles, it also decreases the presence of wrinkles and fine lines that may have appeared already.

4.    Enhances Hair Growth and Healthy Looking Hair
Our hair also contains water. Drinking water everyday helps the hair grow longer, prevents breakage and encourages a healthy scalp.

5.    Aids Weight Loss
Drinking water helps to boost your metabolism which will help break down calories. Drinking water before a meal reduces appetite. As a result of this we tend to eat less.  Another plus is that water contains zero calories.

6.    Lowers the Risk of Health Problems
Constipation and many other health problems can be easily prevented by drinking more water. This is because water flushes out toxins and waste products out of our system. It also then promotes the healthy functioning of vital organs in your body. Drinking water also encourages mental alertness, increases cognitive function and improves brain performance, which is great for creatives.

The truth is I know the benefits of drinking the recommended daily amount of water. I have known all these benefits and more for years now but for a weird reason, I still prefer drinking my tea, cappuccino, wine and soft drinks. Drinking plain water feels like a chore, like something I have to do, but I don’t enjoy. The only time I enjoyed drinking water was while I was pregnant. I could drink 4 litres of water in 24 hours easily. That was one of the best things about being pregnant. I ate and drank healthy.

How do you motivate yourself to drink water? Are you a natural water drinker?

Cure Acne in 7 Days

bed

I have been sleep derived for days now, thanks to my darling baby boy. I was warned about the terrible twos and the sleeping problems it comes along with, but nothing prepared me for what I am currently going through. I am lucky, if I get 4 hours uninterrupted sleep on some nights, kisses to the beauty gurus for innovating the magic stick or liquid – concealer, it usually does the trick. Good makeup and a strong cup of coffee get me through the day on most days, but I now want a more permanent solution to my sleep worries.

I have also realised that apart from me going about like a zombie all day, due to my lack of sleep, my skin also suffers. I have more acne and spots when I am unable to have at least 7 hours sleep a night, than when I do have a good night sleep. On the few occasions, when my little ones allow me sleep, I find that I struggle to find a comfortable position to drift off. I have tried changing pillows, beddings, even tried a Boots sleep pillow mist, and I am still not getting my beauty sleep, so now I am thinking of changing our mattress.

We have had our mattress for now for almost 6 years now, and I know most brands recommend you change your mattress every 8 years, but I think ours is due for a change. I think the most important thing in my makeup bag is my BED (even though it does not fit in my makeup bag), it is not called a beauty sleep for nothing, without sleep there is no beauty or life. Research has shown that it is possible to survive without eating for weeks, but live only 11 days without sleeping, that fact alone should encourage us to make the most of our bed.

An independent study carried out by Adjustable Beds revealed improvements to skin, concentration, mood and well-being from a good night’s sleep. Check out the findings in this video below:

So there you have it. Having a good night sleep (8 hours every night), can cure acne in 7 days. I now aim to call it a day every night once it is 11pm. I know this will be hard, since I am so used to going to bed after midnight everyday, but it not good for my skin or state of mind, so I will be making changes.

Do you have 8 hours sleep every night? Sound off in the comment section.

Thanks for reading.
