Charity of the Month: Manchester Women’s Aid

The charity of the month is Manchester Women’s Aid. This charity is focused on helping domestic abuse survivors by providing safe and confidential temporary accommodation, play services, advice and support, dedicated case workers and support groups. It was created in 2014 and it is currently the largest specialist provider of domestic abuse services in Manchester. I have done a lot of research into their work and what they are doing to help women and children fleeing domestic violence situations. It is lovely to see great charities like Manchester Women’s Aid working tirelessly to save vulnerable women in the city.

Manchester Women’s Aid Mission
  • To promote the equality of women
  • To protect women and their dependants through promoting the mental and physical health of such beneficiaries; advancing the education of such beneficiaries; relieving need, hardship and distress among such beneficiaries and advancing the education of the general public in relation to issues of women’s equality and domestic abuse.
Manchester Women’s Aid Refuge (Emerge)

The charity provides temporary emergency housing for domestic violence victims. It currently has five refuges across Manchester catering for up to 30 families in crisis. Many of the refuges offer full disabled access. The refuges are a mixture of self-contained units and communal homes. The charity also helps facilitate the move to a more permanent accommodation.

Manchester Women’s Aid also provides interpreters for women who do not speak English and they also assign a support worker to every woman who walks into their refuges.

I think this charity is amazing and I am glad to know these services are available to those who desperately need it. If you or someone you know is experiencing any form of domestic violence, please speak out and get help. There are many support services like Manchester Women’s Aid set up to help you get out of such toxic environments.

You can click here to donate to Manchester Women’s Aid. You can give as little or as much as you like – £10 could provide a welcome pack for a woman or family arriving at one of our refuges, with essential toiletries and other basics.

Charity of the month – ActionAid UK

The charity I am supporting this month is ActionAid UK. This charity is focused on the rights of women and girls. ActionAid’s vision is a world without poverty and injustice, in which every person enjoys their right to a life of dignity. One of the biggest causes of poverty in the world is the denial of women’s and girls’ rights, so it is refreshing to find a charity focusing on these issues to help elevate poverty.

ActionAid UK deals with violence against women and girls, women’s economic empowerment, and women’s and girls’ rights in humanitarian crises. Violence against women and girls (VAWG) is a fundamental human rights violation. It affects around one in three women and girls around the world and is a major cause of concern. One of the ways of reducing this trend of violence is by helping women earn a sustainable living. An empowered woman is a strong woman, which is why I am happy to see women’s economic empowerment at the top of the list of what ActionAid UK is all about.

ActionAid UK works in rural and urban communities across Africa, Asia, and Latin America, every day, all year round. The charity also responds to emergency situations arising from disasters or conflict. You can make a donation to help support the work the charity is doing here. If you want to sponsor a child, you can do so here.

There are also others of getting involved with ActionAid UK. You could organise a fundraising event, shop their Christmas card collections and other gifts, or become a campaigner. Have a look at their get involved page to find out how you could work closely with the charity. You can also watch ActionAid UK’s YouTube Video on violence against women and children.

Give to those who have nothing this Christmas with Solace Women’s Aid

This year has been an odd year for me. There has been a lot of ups and downs, but the downs have been a bit more than normal for some weird reason. I am glad the year is almost over. I am looking forward to the Christmas break and starting 2020 from a clean slate. It is so easy to get carried away this season with feeling Christmassy. There are presents to buy and wrap, decorations to put up and shopping to do, it can be too easy to stay focused on ourselves and what we need.

Give to those who have nothing this Christmas

This year and going forward, I am doing it differently. I am giving the little I have to those who have nothing this Christmas. It is surprising to know how many people go without day after day in one of the richest countries in the world. Homelessness is rising day after day, women and children are fleeing their homes due to domestic violence. These people have nothing this Christmas. Imagine if we all gave the little we had to a charity of our choice. That would put smiles on so many faces.

Solace Womens Aid

The charity of my choice this Christmas is Solace Womens Aid (and this is not an ad). The charity focuses on supporting women and children fleeing domestic abuse in London. I have no ties with this charity. I just think they are doing a great job and I felt like supporting the team through a donation and a blog post. Domestic violence is a major issue for the most vulnerable in the society and it breaks my heart to hear about women and children being forced to leave their home and belongings to be away from male abuse. These women and children usually leave with little or nothing, to start all over again. The fear of the unknown means many women would rather stay in abusive environments than seek refuge elsewhere. Which is why charities like Solace Womens Aid is amazing and your donations can help them do more.

Every month, I plan to donate to a new charity and share a blog post about the charity as well. I hope we all have an amazing time getting ready for the big day this month, and remember those who have nothing this season.

Thanks for reading and donating. Have a great week.
