Closet Cleanse: How to Ditch Fast Fashion and Love Sustainable Style

With the rapid, unstoppable rise of fast fashion, building a more sustainable wardrobe is now more important than ever.
Brands are churning out massive collections at a speed our planet simply can’t keep up with, and the habit of constantly buying entirely new outfits every single season just isn’t realistic anymore. If you are ready to finally step off the exhausting fast fashion rollercoaster and embrace a more intentional, eco-friendly approach to style, you are in exactly the right place. This blog post is all about how to build a sustainable wardrobe.

I remember a time in my own life when my wardrobe was bursting at the seams with clothes I barely wore. Years ago, my shopping habits were all about quantity over quality—if it was cheap and on-trend, it went straight into my basket. These days, my approach has completely flipped. I rarely shop for new pieces, but when I do, I make sure they are top-tier quality and fulfill an actual need in my daily life. Buying a garment simply because it looks good on a sale rack no longer cuts it for me. It has to feel amazing and tick every single one of my boxes. This shift toward higher standards is exactly what led me to fall in love with sustainable fashion.
Here are some steps to help you on your journey to sustainable fashion and in building a sustainable wardrobe.
Step 1: Shop Your Own Closet First
Before you spend a single penny on new clothes, take a deep dive into your existing wardrobe. Dedicate an afternoon to trying on pieces you haven’t worn in months. You will often find hidden gems you completely forgot about, or realize that a simple styling tweak—like rolling up the sleeves or pairing it with a different belt—can make an old piece feel brand new again.
Step 2: Fall in Love with the 30-Wears Rule
Before making any fashion purchase, ask yourself the golden question: “Will I wear this at least 30 times?” If the answer is no, leave it on the rack. This simple mental filter instantly stops you from buying impulsive, hyper-trendy fast fashion pieces that are destined to sit in your closet after just one night out.
Step 3: Check the Fabric Composition Labels
Sustainable fashion is deeply tied to durability. When browsing for clothes, flip the garment inside out and read the care and fabric label. Avoid synthetic, petroleum-based fabrics like polyester, acrylic, and nylon, which degrade quickly and trap microplastics. Instead, look for durable, biodegradable natural fibers like organic cotton, linen, silk, and wool.
Step 4: Master the Art of Second-Hand Shopping
Thrifting is no longer about digging through dusty bins; it has become incredibly curated and accessible. Explore digital resale platforms like Vinted, Depop, Ebay, or Vestiaire Collective to find high-quality, pre-loved designer and vintage items at a fraction of their original price. Shopping second-hand extends the lifespan of clothing and keeps garments out of landfills.
Step 5: Invest in a Capsule Wardrobe Foundation
Shift your focus away from statement pieces and start investing in timeless, versatile basics. Build a foundation of high-quality essentials—like a perfectly tailored blazer, a crisp white button-down, and a classic pair of well-fitting denim. These core items can be mixed, matched, and layered endlessly, creating dozens of outfits from just a few high-quality garments.

Your Wardrobe, Your Impact
Stepping away from the fast fashion cycle doesn’t mean you have to lose your love for personal style. If anything, embracing sustainable fashion makes dressing up so much more rewarding. When you curate a closet filled with pieces that boast incredible quality, a meaningful story, and a true purpose, getting dressed every morning becomes an absolute joy. Start small, buy less, and choose well—your wardrobe (and the planet) will thank you!

Like with every essential oil, you have to be cautious when handling this oil. A few drops are all you would need at a time. I usually put in 4/5 drops in my bath water or diffuser and that is more than enough.

If you’re one of those people who cannot stop shopping, this post may give you great new ideas on how to avoid impulse shopping and save money by buying what you actually need. 3 Ways to Avoid Impulse Shopping

Struggling with impulse shopping? Here are the things you need to do –

Don’t shop when you feel stressed

If you are dealing with any emotional issues, it is best to stay away from shopping completely until you start to feel like yourself again. Research has shown that our brains react differently when we are stressed or dealing with emotional issues, and these changes in the brain cause us to make reactionary decisions instead of thoughtful ones.  If you have to shop when you are feeling low, take a break and ask yourself if you would buy the item(s) on a different day. This question would allow you to reassess the situation to ensure you are making the right purchase.

Have a budget and stick to it

This sounds easy but many of us shop without a budget and this is when it becomes tricky. It is important to have a budget and stick to it, that way we don’t get carried away while shopping and overspend. Having a budget also helps in making sure we stretch our money even more because when we have a budget we tend to look for sales and discounts to get more for our money.

Shop online

Online shopping is a great way to avoid impulse buying because we only search for items you want and buy them. You won’t have to go through aisles and aisles of tempting products when shopping online and that is one of the main reasons why it is such a great idea to shop online. Plus, shopping online is also super convenient. I don’t have to physically leave the comfort of my home to get what I need which is amazing.
