Tip 1 – Understand your skin type

Choosing the right cleanser for your skin starts with you understanding what your skin type. It helps you pick cleansers with the ingredients your skin needs. You don’t want to go for a cleanser just because it is popular with beauty content creators, instead you want to choose the right cleanser that best suited for your skin. For instance, if you have a dry skin, you would want to try oil and cream based cleansers as they are more hydrating. While, if you have an oily skin, you would want to try foam cleansers as they are more lightweight and remove excess oil effortlessly. Understanding your skin type is the first step in getting your skincare routine right and picking the most appropriate cleanser. What is your skin type?

Tip 2 – Go for gentle cleansers

Like with everything skincare, always opt for gentle cleansers. Using harsh skincare products are never a good idea, especially for those with more sensitive skin. It is always best to go for gentler and more natural products that would do only good. Always check the ingredients before you buy a new cleanser or any skincare product, and make sure you are happy with all that is included. Which cleanser are you currently using?

Use Gentle Hair Products

It is always a good idea to use gentle products especially when it comes to hair care. The last thing you would want is to apply harsh products on your delicate edges. I usually opt for natural products and I make sure it is gentle enough for my hair. For example, alcohol-based products could do more damage than style, as they tend to dry out the hair. So when next you go shopping for hair care products, make sure you go for more gentle options. Here are some great options here and here.

Avoid Tight Hairstyles

Now this is a big one, especially with protective styles that tend to be tighter than others. I always make sure I avoid tight hairstyles because the tightness can damage the hair edges and follicles. I have had a few bad experiences over the years with tight hairstyles, so it is something I stay away from now. If you want a healthy hairline, stay away from tight hairstyles.

Say No to Stress

Like with many things, stress can cause havoc in our lives and in our edges. Whch is why finding ways to unwind and relax in a healthy manner is crucial for our overall health and wellbeing. If you want to save your edges, avoid being stressed as much as possible because stress disrupts the natural hair growth process.

Avoid Lots of Friction

This is where the hair silk scarves and bonnets come in handy while we sleep as they protect the hair edges from friction. Silk pillowcases also help protect the hair from lots of friction which could damage the hair line.

Little to No Heat

Using lots of heat could damage the hair. I avoid using heat on my hair and instead, I wrap my hair to dry after a wash, and style my hair with no heat. It works for me but if you rather use heat, be gentle especially with the hair edges.

Double cleanse

I have recently started double cleansing, first with a cleansing balm, and then with a water based cleanser. I do this about twice a week and I fnd that it leaves my skin very clean and clear. For this tip to work effectively, you should ensure that you are using the right cleansing products that would not leave your skin dehydrated. I have been trying out some new luxury skincare products that are really good and I would writing some beauty review posts soon so keep your eyes peeled.

Wash your face with lukewarm water

Still on cleansing, this should be done twice a day, once in the morning and before bedtime at night. It is best to avoid using hot water when cleansing the face as this can strip tye skin, leaving it dry and dehydrated. Always cleans with lukewarm water or cold water if you can manage it. This also applies to the body, hot water can damage the skin if used excessively, so for glowing skin, stick to lukewarm water temperature.

Apply skincare products in the right order

Always start with the thinnest/lightest to the thickest when applying skincare products. So for example, it is cleanse, tone, serum, moisturiser, and face oil. Also, give about 2/3 minutes for each product to be fully absorbed into the skin before applying the next product.

Massage your skincare products into the skin

When applying your skincare products, take your time with each product and step, to ensure the skincare products are fully abosobed. Apart from the fact that face massages are really relaxing, they also help boost circulation which helps your skin glow. This is one tip I am doing a lot more of and I am love it.

Use sunscreen and stay hydrated

Using sunscreen every day helps protect the skin from harmful rays and prevents premature skin ageing. Some moisturisers have sinscreen, some don’t. So always check to see if you need to apply separate sunscreen and include this in your daily skincare routine. Also, remember to drink the recommend amounts of water to ensure overall health.
