Simple ways to care for your hair

*Collaborative post.

Sometimes we overcomplicate things and do more harm than good. Our haircare routine is one thing we overcomplicate. When it comes to haircare, I like to keep it simple. The simpler the routine, the healthier my hair is. Our natural hair can be difficult to maintain but when taken care of properly, the results are amazing. I have been paying special attention to my hair for the last couple of years now and I have started to see the results. My hair is thick and healthy. It is also growing like weed now, which is good. Prior to me going natural, my hair was weak and very unhealthy. I was dealing with intense hair breakage and I could do little or nothing with my hair. So going natural was the best thing I ever did for my hair. It allowed me to treat it properly with the nice hair care products like this Nanogen hair thickening fibres, to keep the hair healthy and shiny.

Here are some simple ways to keep your hair nice and healthy –

Use a hydrating shampoo

A simple way of caring for your hair is to use a hydrating shampoo regularly. Your hair retains more moisture when you wash it with a hydrating shampoo. Many shampoos tend to dry out the hair so keep an eye on the ingredients before you splash out on the next shampoo.

Conditioner is a must after you use a shampoo

Using the right hair conditioner after a shampoo is a simple way to care for your hair. You should also pay attention to the ingredients to ensure they are best for your hair type. Leave in conditioners also work great for the hair. I like to apply mine everyday to keep my hair moisturised and healthy.

Moisturise daily

Moisturising the hair daily is a quick and easy way to take care. I have a leave in conditioner, coconut oil and water mixture in a body that I spray on my hair and it keeps my hair so healthy. I have a very dry scalp so keeping it moisturised everyday is really important.

Put on a silk scarf at night

Wearing a hair scarf at night helps retain the hair moisture. It also protects the hair, reduces hair breakage and keeps the hair in place. A silk bonnet also works great if you rather have that on at night. I would be lost without mine.

Protective styles help the hair

Having your hair in protective styles help give the hair a well deserved rest from all the manipulation. I like to have my hair in protective styles every other moment to give the hair a break and switch up my look. Also, using the hair protective style products help the hair style stay neat for longer.

How to Stop your Hair from Thinning Out

Has your hair lost volume? Is your hair thinning out? Thinning hair has been a great problem for women. As the hair thins down, your hair becomes brittle, it breaks and eventually falls out. There are a lot of factors that cause the hair to thin out. Stress, poor diet, harsh chemical hair products are among some of the main reasons and sometimes it can also be genetic.
Your hair can improve considerably if you change your hair care routine. Here are some hair care tips you may find useful:
1.    Save your hair from tension
Excessive tugging on your hair while brushing or tying your hair up in a tight ponytail or bun can cause a lot of tension to your hair. You also cause tension to your hair each time you use a comb and a hair dryer when trying to straighten your hair. This causes the hair follicles to get damaged.
Practise brushing your hair gently and try not to comb your hair as often. I know this may sound crazy but to retain some hair length, especially for the natural afro hair, you need to not comb as often.

Instead of making hairstyles that will require you to keep your hair tightly together, choose looser hairstyles. Instead of having to comb everyday, have your hair in a protective style so you don’t have to comb as much.
2.    Cut back on using heated styling tools to style your hair
Subjecting your hair to intense heat can weaken the hair and cause it to break easily. I stay away from heated styling tools completely. They are great for hair extensions but not for my hair. I air dry my hair 99% of the time. If at all you have to use them, make sure you apply a heat protectant to help conserve moisture in your hair.
3.    Condition you hair regularly
When your hair is dehydrated, the strands grow thinner. Conditioning will help restore moisture into your hair. The amino acids found in hair conditioners help to prevent your hair from further damage. Go for lightweight conditioners because ultra-softening conditioners tend to be heavy for the hair. Opt for conditioners that contain panthenol and glycerin as they help to moisturize and thicken the hair.
4.    Give your scalp a good massage
Massaging your scalp promotes blood circulation which stimulates hair growth. You can use natural oils like sesame oil to massage your scalp before shampooing. Another name for this exercise is “Pre-Poo”. Or each time you shampoo your hair, give your scalp a good massage before rinsing the shampoo out.
5.    Eat a healthy diet
The hair derives nutrients from the body. A deficiency in hair-friendly food can cause your hair to thin down. So eat foods rich in the B vitamins, folic acid and iron. Include leafy green vegetables, eggs, beans, carrots and nuts into your diet and your hair may start to thank you for it.
6.    Take time off to relax
Stress affects everything so I wasn’t surprise to learn it also affects our hair follicles, which make them stop producing. Taking time off to unwind is essential to our wellbeing.

Hair Care Tips

Hair Care

While growing up, I had healthy, thick long hair (I am hairy remember), and thankfully I have passed the hairy gene to my kids. However, over the years, my healthy hair began to thin out, and I lost a good chunk of it. In fact, my hair is usually buried under some hair extensions, braids, or wig, so I don’t have to deal with it.

I did not pay attention to my hair care when I was younger, and I am living with the result of my neglect. If I could turn back the hands of time, I would pay special attention to my hair, but since I can’t, I will do what I can do now, which is, shower the little hair I have on my head and my daughter’s beautiful long  kinky hair, with extra love and care.

There is nothing as beautiful as healthy hair, so if you have it, you better take care of it. Many people would do anything to have a second chance to take care of their hair. Just ask the people at Hayley Street Hair Clinic – the leading hair replacement specialist, renowned for pioneering the adoption of high quality follicular unit extraction technology (FUE) in the UK. Many people are willingly to spend good money to have a full head of hair. The hair transplant cost page provides more information on how much people spend to have their hair back.

If you have gone through the website, I guess you won’t need anymore convincing on how important it is to take good care of your hair while you can. Here are some hair care tips you may find useful:

Washing your Hair

Now this tip is more for black women because majority of us tend to have hair extensions or braids on.

Try not to wash your hair too frequently if you can get away with it. I aim to wash my daughter’s hair twice a month, in between I have her hair in plaits. I also aim to wash my hair twice a month. Listen to your hair, if it looks dry, you are probably washing your hair too often.

Also, while washing, make sure you are using the right shampoo ad conditioner for your hair. I usually start off with a hair shampoo, then I leave my conditioner in for about 30 minutes, then wash off.

Oil your Hair Religiously

I oil my hair and my daughter’s hair every two days. The weather, the sun and pollution could damage your hair, so try to apply a moisturising hair oil, cream or spray to protect it. Oiling the hair regularly nourishes the hair, which makes your hair look healthy, and shiny.

Use the Right Curling Iron

There are so many types of curling irons in the market today, many perform similarly, but meant for different hair types, so make sure you have the right curling iron for your hair type. I have very thick hair, so I use a ceramic flat-iron hair straightener and a ceramic curling wand to get the curls out, and it works perfectly.

Protective Styles

I noticed my hair breaks a lot when I just have it out in the open, so I usually have my natural hair in a protective style, usually a weave underneath the whole glam you see. That way, I can be rest assured that the ends of my hair are nicely tucked in, and protected from the elements.

So there you have it, my hair care tips. What do you think? How do you take care of your natural hair?
