Road Trip from New York to Maryland

After spending 48 hours in New York City, our next stop was Maryland. We decided we were going to drive down, so we rented a car from Enterprise. The process of renting the car was smooth and straight forward. The car was in a good shape, and car seats were provided for the kids as requested.

The road trip was fun overall. The kids didn’t bug as much, so it was a good journey. As soon as we got out of New York, and got into New Jersey, there was difference. The air felt different. The people looked a lot happier. It was like a breath of fresh air. We stopped over at a service centre in New Jersey, so I had the opportunity to take in the city and observe the people. People watching is one of my favourite things to do. I also got the chance to grab a New Jersey souvenir. It would be amazing to spend a few days in the city one day. I am sure there would be a lot to see.

Driving in the US is always fun. The driving rules are different from the rules in the UK, so you have to pay attention. The roads are so wide in comparison to the tiny roads we have here. And there were quite a few toll gates on our way, but it was all good. We all enjoyed the road trip, and I can see us doing it again, from other cities.

I know we are a bit adventurous when it comes to how we holiday. And I like that about our trips. When the kids get older, we plan to be even more adventurous. I would love to visit California one day. The distance is putting me off, but I am hoping we could make the trip when the kids are a bit older. There is a lot to see in the world and I plan to see as much as possible.

You can see more of my trip on my 48 hours in New York and Madame Tussauds posts. I will be writing more on my stay in Maryland. I didn’t get to do much of exploring. Majority of my time was spent shopping. We planned to take the kids to see the White House and other parts of Washington DC, but we didn’t get the chance to do all that. It was my 3rd time in Maryland so I have done most of the tourist stuff already but maybe when next we are in the area, we will get to do more.

Our Visit to Madame Tussauds New York

While we were in New York, we visited Madame Tussauds. It was my first time visiting a Madame Tussauds. I am yet to visit the one in London, so I was happy to visit this one. The wax museum was celebrating Bollywood, so there was a DJ and some Bollywood dancers, which was good entertainment. We didn’t plan to visit Madame Tussauds. It just happened because our hotel was next door to the museum, and we decided to go in. I wish we planned our visit beforehand. It is a lot cheaper to buy the tickets online, rather than at the door. We would have saved around $20 if we booked the tickets online.

My first impression of Madame Tussauds New York was that I got the feeling of being in a club. The music was way too loud. I didn’t understand why the music had to be that loud in a wax museum but we quickly got on with it.

We got closer to the stars for sure, and we took lots of photos. You may have seen some of my shots on Instagram if you follow me on there. I have been disturbing the timelines all week now.

There was a lot to photograph. The kids loved posing next to the celebs, especially my daughter. She had a fantastic time. It was like Christmas came early for her.

We took a break after an hour or so. There was a little restaurant, so we got some drinks and pizza. The kids needed a break and we adults were shattered as well. After our lunch, we carried on admiring the beautiful wax creations. Some were more amazing than others. I really like the ones of the Royal Family and Princess Diana. They looked very real.

We decided to skip the world-exclusive Ghostbusters: Dimension Virtual Reality Experience bit because we were advised our kids may not like it much. Which was a shame, since we had that package on our tickets already. We would have saved a few dollars and not bothered getting a platinum ticket if we knew the reality experience may not be age appropriate. But we made the most of the rest of our time there by heading off to watch Marvel 4D movie. It was about 20 minutes, and we all enjoyed the short movie.

Overall, we had a great time. We were at the museum for around 3 hours in all. I would love to visit Madame Tussauds in other locations, but will make sure to plan the visit.

A Beginners Guide To Visiting Cannes

Cannes is best known for hosting the world famous film festival that draws huge crowds every year. But that’s only one of the things that it has to offer. It has an amazing climate all year round with great beaches and plenty of great cultural sights to see. If you’ve never thought about visiting Cannes before, it might be worth heading over there next time you visit France. Here is a quick guide to make sure you get the most out of your trip.

Where to Stay

Cannes can be a pretty expensive city and if you’re staying right in the centre, it’ll cost you. Luckily, there are some great places you can stay nearby that will be a lot cheaper, while still giving you easy access to all of the sights. Mougins in France is only a 15 minute drive from Cannes but you can still find the same luxury accommodation, without the hefty price tag. There are plenty of amazing villas that come complete with a swimming pool and a beautiful view of the surrounding area. Staying just outside the centre of Cannes will make the whole trip a lot cheaper and it also gives you a chance to get away from the hustle and bustle of the centre if you want to relax for a day or two.

Shopping

There are some great shopping destinations in Cannes if you’re after a bit of retail therapy while you’re away. There are some great markets offering local produce, particularly if you’re a big seafood fan. As well as brilliant food markets, there are some quaint little antique shops and traditional potters where you can pick up some great souvenirs for the house. If you’re into your fashion, you can find some of the best clothing brands in the world like Chanel, Prada and Louis Vuitton. The best thing about it is, they’re often cheaper than you can buy them elsewhere.

Cultural Sights

Cannes is known as a center for film culture but there are also other great cultural sights to visit. The Malmaison is home to some great modern photography and art exhibitions, housed in an old 19th century mansion that was originally part of the grand hotel. For some local history, the Musee de la Castre is the place to go. It houses a great collection of weaponry, artifacts and old ceramics that were collected by local aristocrats.

Food And Drink

Pretty much anywhere you go in France you’ll find great food and drink and Cannes is no exception. There is a good local fishing industry in the area. So you can find some of the best seafood in the country in Cannes. Particular highlights include Astoux et Cie Brun and the Michelin starred La Villa Archange. If you’re looking for something a little more straightforward, Grill and Wines is a great standard restaurant serving good food with great service.

It’s always worth visiting Cannes for the film festival but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go any other time of year because it’s not just about the touristy stuff.
