Road Trip from New York to Maryland

After spending 48 hours in New York City, our next stop was Maryland. We decided we were going to drive down, so we rented a car from Enterprise. The process of renting the car was smooth and straight forward. The car was in a good shape, and car seats were provided for the kids as requested.

The road trip was fun overall. The kids didn’t bug as much, so it was a good journey. As soon as we got out of New York, and got into New Jersey, there was difference. The air felt different. The people looked a lot happier. It was like a breath of fresh air. We stopped over at a service centre in New Jersey, so I had the opportunity to take in the city and observe the people. People watching is one of my favourite things to do. I also got the chance to grab a New Jersey souvenir. It would be amazing to spend a few days in the city one day. I am sure there would be a lot to see.

Driving in the US is always fun. The driving rules are different from the rules in the UK, so you have to pay attention. The roads are so wide in comparison to the tiny roads we have here. And there were quite a few toll gates on our way, but it was all good. We all enjoyed the road trip, and I can see us doing it again, from other cities.

I know we are a bit adventurous when it comes to how we holiday. And I like that about our trips. When the kids get older, we plan to be even more adventurous. I would love to visit California one day. The distance is putting me off, but I am hoping we could make the trip when the kids are a bit older. There is a lot to see in the world and I plan to see as much as possible.

You can see more of my trip on my 48 hours in New York and Madame Tussauds posts. I will be writing more on my stay in Maryland. I didn’t get to do much of exploring. Majority of my time was spent shopping. We planned to take the kids to see the White House and other parts of Washington DC, but we didn’t get the chance to do all that. It was my 3rd time in Maryland so I have done most of the tourist stuff already but maybe when next we are in the area, we will get to do more.

Have you had a road trip from New York to Maryland? What do you think go both cities?

48 Hours in New York City

Last week, we spent 48 hours in New York City. It was our first time in NYC, and I have been dying to see the Big Apple. We landed at JFK airport after a very long British Airways flight. We were super exhausted as we had quite a few flight delays but we got there in the end. I wasn’t impressed with the flight service from Heathrow to New York. It left a lot to be desired. Apart from the many delays, the quality of the screen for the entertainment was poor. Thankfully, that was not the case on our back from Washington to Heathrow.

New York City is one place I have always wanted to visit. I have heard a lot of good and bad things about the city. I agree with majority of what I heard and I have my own views of the city. And I am very happy I finally got the chance to experience it all for myself.

The cold welcomed us as soon as we landed. It was a lot colder than it was in Cheshire, so it came as a bit of a shock to the system. It was easy to get a taxi to our hotel, and we were thankful for that. We stayed at Hilton Times Square for 2 nights. The service at the hotel was ok. I expected an excellent service since the hotel didn’t come cheap. But I quickly realised that excellent service in the US is extremely rare. I think it is just the way things work around there.

The first thing I noticed in New York, apart from the cold weather, were the long faces. Many of the people we came across looked unhappy. Like they didn’t want to be there, doing their jobs. It kind of reminded me of London, but the Londoners are not half as miserable as the New Yorkers.

We spent all of our time in Times Square. There was no plan to visit the major tourist attractions. We all suffered greatly from Jet Lag. And with 2 toddlers and just 48 hours to spare, there wasn’t much we could do.

Madame Tussauds was just next door to our hotel so we spent some hours exploring the beautiful place. I have a lot to share on that, so will be writing a dedicated on that in the next few days.

We also walked around Times Square and got some lovely shots! If you follow me on Instagram, you would have seen many of my New York City photos and stories.

After our 48 hours in New York City, our next stop was Maryland. We drove from New York City to Laurel, Maryland. It was a fun road trip. We sent through New Jersey, Delaware and other cities. I will be writing a post on our road trip and time in Maryland in other posts.

Overall, I found New York a bit too much. It was overwhelming. The city definitely never sleeps and we were in the heart of the madness. I didn’t have the time or energy to explore the city as much as I would have wanted to. But from the little I saw, I am glad I don’t live in New York. I don’t think I would be able to cope living there. The hustle and bustle is unbelievable and it is such an expensive city. Having said that, it is a beautiful place to an extent. The many skyscrapers are a beauty to behold and Times Square is so beautiful with the lights and billboards. It is definitely worth seeing at least once in a lifetime.

Will I be visiting again? Maybe. If something comes up, I would go. But as a tourist, definitely not anytime soon. Maybe when the kids are older and we have more time to spare.

Was the visit worth it? Oh yes. Everyone should see New York. It is a great holiday destination.

Have you visited New York?

Top Holiday Destinations

I am badly in need of a proper holiday. It has been a busy year so far, and a nice mini break is already needed. I have a few holiday destinations in mind, and I need to get planning. I am hoping to visit 3 countries this year as I did last year. Last year, I visited Italy in January, and Dubai and Oman in summer. I am not 100% sure of which countries I want to visit this year, but I am hoping they will be as much as fun as my holidays were last year.

Here are 3 holiday destinations I have in mind –

Iceland

I never really wanted to visit Iceland until some years ago. It has become a very popular holiday destination, and I now badly want to visit it. I would love to go ice-climbing in Iceland one day. I took some ski lessons last year with the family last year, and planning on having some more ski lessons this year. I have heard a lot of good things about ski lessons les menuires, so will be checking the snow school out later in the year.

Learning to ski professionally has always been a dream of mine. I hope it becomes a reality one day.

New York

I have never been to New York – The Big Apple before, but I plan to visit really soon. I have heard a lot about this amazing city, and I can’t wait to see it all for myself. It also sounds like a lovely winter destination. Especially if you are after the cold temperature, as I hear it gets really cold in the Big Apple. Even colder than in London.

New York is definitely a romantic winter destination for love birds, and a great all year travel destination too!

Los Angeles

Visiting this Southern California city is high on my travel list. Escaping to sunny Los Angeles would be an amazing idea right now as it is painfully cold in Cheshire.

I have always wanted to visit Los Angeles, thanks to the many reality tv shows filmed in the city. God knows I have seen loads. It would be great to visit the Disneyland park over there and experience the Hollywood city. There is a lot to see in this city and I am seriously looking forward to the day we would make a trip down.

It is quite a distance, so not sure this trip will be happening anytime soon with the kids. Maybe when they are a little older.

What travel destinations do you have in mind for 2018?
