Children thrive when there is a routine

The Kiddies were on holiday until this week. They had their spring break earlier this year, and were back to school this Monday. Usually during the holidays, we have a very flexible routine. There is more time to get things done, so I usually have a relaxed approach to our routine. This works okay for the first 2 days or so, and then it usually becomes really chaotic. Children thrive when there is a routine in place as they know what is expected and what needs to be done. But when there is none, things can easily get crazy, which leads to tantrums, more tantrums, use of the naughty step and over tiredness.

The Importance of Routines

Many families still have the go with the flow approach when it comes to raising up kids and running the home. The children eat whenever, sleep whenever they decide to fall asleep and pretty much do whatever they want to do at home, with no clear set times for anything. They don’t see the importance of having a routine. Instead, they prefer to let things happen “naturally”, which usually never works in the real world.

Here are some of the reasons why having a routine for your children is really important –

Security

Routines give children a sense of security. It also help them develop self-discipline which is a life skill we all need to prosper. I have had a routine for the twins since they were 3 months old. The routine has been tweaked here and there from time to time, as they have grown older. I can’t imagine us not having a routine. A routine helps the child feel safe and secure, which helps them handle day-to-day life better.

Structure

Having a routine offers the child structure. This helps them manage themselves and their surroundings better. I feel better when my days have some form of structure. Structured days are always very productive for me, and it works the same way for kids. Having a routine, and knowing what needs to be done, and planning towards takes away power struggles you may be experiencing with your children.

Responsibility

Children learn to be more responsible and take charge of their activities when they have a routine. They know they need to lay their beds when they wake up for example, because that is the first thing they do with mum everyday. When there is a routine, you don’t need to go on and on about what needs to be done because the children know already. Children corporate better when there is a routine, which means fewer tantrums, stress and anxiety for everyone involved.

How to get your kids to enjoy reading

I have been reading to the Kiddies since they were tiny babies. I enjoyed reading as a child and I carried my love for reading and writing to adulthood. My kids have tapped into that. They enjoy reading and writing, and now the tables have sort of turned since they now read to me now. I get them to read at least 1 book (most times 2) everyday to me, and I read a book each day with them. The importance of reading to children cannot be overemphasised but yet it is amazing how many parents hardly ever read to their kids.

I know how tricky it can be to fit it all in. As a work from home mum, I have to be very organised to get anything done with my twins. So I know all about how tiring it can be to get hone and open books with kids, but it is something we have to do if we want them to excel in their day to day life. Reading and writing is something we do everyday. We can’t take a day off reading especially, so it is best to develop that skill as early as possible.

How to get your kids to enjoy reading

Luckily I don’t struggle in this department as my kids are natural lovers of books but I helped them develop their love for reading. Here are some of the things you can do to help your kids fall in love with reading –

Buy them books

The twins have bookshelves each filled with books, and they get regular books every week from school, so they read a lot of different books. I made sure they got age appropriate books from when they were born. This has helped because they discovered books from a very young age. The fact that they read books appropriate ages as also helped their reading.

Read to them

Buying books is a waste if you don’t read to your kids, Reading to them on a daily basis helps their development. Putting on different voices also helps capture their attention. My daughter started reading for herself from the age of 3 and has improved over the years, so as my son.

Get them involved

Before my kids could read, I got them involved by asking them to pick the books they wanted me to read to them. I also get them involved by asking questions about whatever book we were reading. Now that they read, I get them to pick the books they want to read and I listen while they read.

Reward good reading

If your kids are anything like my twins then they would love rewards. I got my kids potty trained with the help of a sticker charts and Underpants book. I got them to feed themselves with rewards. Anything worth doing, I get them to doing it by rewarding good behaviour. If you struggle to get your kids to read, having a reward chart may help. For every book they read (or attempt to read since looking at picture books does help), you reward. A reward could be big or small, from a new top to a trip to the park.

How often do you read to your kids? Do they enjoy reading?

Our mini photo shoot was fun as always. The twins enjoy taking photos, especially my daughter. She has a new pose for every new shot!

We really like these Syrup and Salt Sweatshirts. They are colourful and stylish. I really like the creative designs. The Grey Kids Sweatshirt with Glittery Lightning Bolt (Pink Highlight) is such a beauty. My daughter really likes the glittery lightning bolt with pink highlight. She has worn it a few times already as it complements her existing wardrobe so it is easy to style. The sweatshirt also washes really well which is a plus.

My son’s Yellow Kids Sunshine and Waves Sweatshirt is also very pretty. I love the bright colour, yellow looks lovely on him. The waves design is also very stylish. It reminds me of the summer months, which I am seriously missing at the moment. He has worn it a couple of times as well and it washes very too!
