A Sense for Scents: A Roundup of the Best Scents in Hand Lotions

EOS

The adage “put your best foot forward” is a bit misleading because it is, in fact, our hands that are extended first. Whether it’s a handshake, a wave, or the ever-so-underrated high-five, our hands are seen far more than our feet ever will be. The highlight of my skincare routine is hydration, especially the hands. My favourite part about lotions is the scents, of course. I love food-based scents far more than those derived from flowers. Perhaps it is my inner foodie that desires to smell like food. Who knows? The sense of smell and the brain are intricately linked. A whiff can transport you to a memory you perhaps had once forgotten, evoke an emotion, or be a calming reminder of someone you love. Here is a sampling of some of my favourite hand lotion scents:

#1 Apricot: Apricot is a favourite because it immediately reminds me of my mother. She is a true lady in every sense of the word. Like her, when the apricot scent enters the room, you are every bit aware of its presence, but it is never overpowering. It is also a delicate scent that is affable to even those who prefer lotions of the unscented variety.

#2 Cucumber: Cucumber is such a fun smell. It boasts a crispness that’s both sweet and refreshing. I find this scent most appropriate for the daytime. Cucumber is certainly the wildcard of the group. It pairs well with just about any other scent. It can amplify the aroma of a more muted scent or tone down a very dominant fragrance. Currently my favorite Cucumber-scented lotion on the market is made by Evolution of Smooth. If you want to check it out you can find it here.

#3 Vanilla: Whether we’re talking cake, ice cream, or lotion, you can never go wrong with a classic vanilla. Depending on the vanilla, it can be very light or quite powerful, especially when blended with another scent. For me, the best vanilla is somewhere in between. It’s certainly noticeable but not headache wrenching. I love vanilla in the winter. It compliments the cold weather and is a fragrance equivalent to an elegant winter white.

#4 Lemon: Ahhh! Nothing makes me feel quite the way the scent of lemon does. There’s a reason it is always a scent option in household cleaners. This smell on your hands just screams, “clean!” It rouses fond memories of Saturday-morning chores and summer lemonade. The citrus tingle makes your hands feel so revitalized and full of energy.

How to Lighten your Underarms

50 Shades of Blue Image

Dark underarms can be so embarrassing. It prevents you from wearing those gorgeous sleeveless tops or dresses you want to wear in the summer. You end up feeling insecure and self-conscious about your dark underarms, and this can slowly start to affect your self-esteem.

Shaving, use of harmful chemical substances from hair removal creams, deodorants or antiperspirants are major causes of dark armpits. Thankfully, there are effective home remedies that can help make your underarms lighter. Using natural products is the best way to lighten your underarms as chemical products will do more harm than good. I’ll share some natural home remedies that will help lighten dark underarms.

You can lighten your underarms naturally in 3 ways:

1. Bleach your underarms

Certain foods contain bleaching agents which help to lighten your skin. Lemon is quite effective when it comes to bleaching dark areas of your skin. The acidic properties in lemon help lighten your underarms and exfoliate dead skin cells.

Lemon Application:

Rub a lemon segment directly on your underarms or apply lemon juice with your finger tips. Massage it in for a couple of minutes before you take a shower. Do this daily. Lemon has the tendency to dry your skin. So, moisturize your underarms to prevent it from drying out.

If you have sensitive skin, lemon may cause an irritation. This is because lemon is extremely acidic. Potatoes are a great alternative to lemon as they have mild acidic properties. This makes potatoes ideal for lightening sensitive skin.

Potato Application:

Rub a slice of potato on your underarms for 5-10 minutes, then wash it off with warm water. You can also grate the potato to extract its juice and apply the juice on your armpit. Do this morning and night for best results.

2. Exfoliate your underarms

When dead skin cells accumulate on your underarms, it can make it look dark. Gently exfoliating the area removes the dead skin and makes your underarms look lighter. Baking soda is an effective exfoliant. Aside from the fact that it’s natural, baking soda acts as a natural deodorant and antiperspirant. It even prevents odours.

Application:

Mix baking soda and water together to make a thick paste. Then apply the mixture on your underarms. Using your fingers, gently scrub your underarms for some minutes and then wash off the mixture with some warm water. Make sure you don’t scrub too hard to prevent any injuries.

3. Oil your underarms

Interestingly, oiling your underarms can lighten your skin. Coconut oil is rich with vitamin E. The Vitamin E in coconut oil helps to lighten your skin naturally. Just another reason to stock up on some coconut oil.

Application:

Rub some coconut oil on your armpits before you take a shower. Massage the coconut oil for a few minutes, then with a mild soap and lukewarm water, wash the oil off from your skin.

To experience the direct effect of Vitamin E, you can buy Vitamin E in a capsule, puncture it and apply the oil on your underarms. Massage the Vitamin E oil on your skin, and then wash it off. Do this daily for best results.

I have used these tips personally, so I know they work. May not work for you or suit your skin but it is worth a try if you are struggling with dark underarms.

How to Get Summer-Ready Legs

Shades of Blue Image

It’s summer! And you know what that means? Time to bring out those lovely dresses, skirts and shorts…and of course, show off those legs!
Since your legs will likely be exposed during the summer, it’s important to get them looking fabulous. To get fabulous looking legs, you need to make prep them. Here are some steps you need to take to have your summer-ready legs.
1.    Get Rid of the Hair
If you want to flaunt good-looking legs during the summer, removing the unwanted hair off your legs is the first step. Waxing is a painful but common way of getting rid of the hair on legs. It can be done at a salon or from the comfort of your home using a wax strip. Another option is to use an epilator. Epilators are pretty handy. The process is not as messy and it’s so effective that it picks out the tiniest hair on your legs.

Another popular way of getting rid of the hair is by applying a hair removal cream. I currently use Veet Hair Removal Cream, and it works like magic, leaving me with smooth, hair free legs within minutes.
2.    Exfoliate
Now that your legs are hair free, the next step is to exfoliate. Exfoliation doesn’t only help remove traces of dried skin, it also helps to prevent ingrown hairs and bumpy skin. This will ensure that your skin feels nice and smooth.

To exfoliate, you can use exfoliating gloves. Slip your hand through the exfoliating glove and scrub your legs, preferably in circular motion. Take care not to apply too much pressure or scrub too long so you don’t hurt yourself. An alternative to exfoliating gloves is a scrub, which you can buy from the store or make yourself if you are feeling creative. Natural scrubs like the sea salt or Epsom salts make excellent scrubs. Apply the scrub on your legs and rub in circular motions. Don’t apply too much pressure while scrubbing or you could end up hurting yourself. And remember not to scrub for too long.

3. Use a Hard Skin Remover

If you have a hard skin remover, like an Emjoi Micro Pedi, this is the time to use it the most. These devices get rid of rough, dead skin, leaving your feet summer-ready.
4.    Moisturize
The next step is to moisturize your legs. Moisturizing helps to keep your skin soft, smooth and hydrated. The best time to apply a moisturizer is immediately after stepping out of the shower while your skin is still damp. This way, while applying moisturizer it will trap the water and keep your skin hydrated.
5.    Apply sunscreen
This is the final and most important step in getting your legs summer-ready. Your legs will be exposed to the rays of the sun. So, it is important to protect them from the harmful Ultraviolet (UV) rays. Apply a generous amount of sunscreen on your legs after moisturizing.

These are my tips for summer-ready legs. Do you have any tips to share? Drop them in the comment section.
