My Visit to Barcelona

Thursdays are all about memories. So I am throwing it right back to when I visited the beautiful city of Barcelona in 2012. I always wanted to explore Spain, so when I had the opportunity to visit Barcelona, I was super thrilled. Barcelona is such a beautiful city with so much history and a rich culture. It is definitely a city I would like to visit again with the kids in tow this time.

Visiting Spain was a dream come true. It was on my bucket list for years so making it happen was so cool. The trip happened pre kids and pre blogging, so I never really blogged about the trip. Which is why you are reading this travel blog post now.

The trip to Barcelona happened in my young and free days. I was determined to see as much of the world as I could see before starting a family and it happened. I did get to see quite a few cities. Now that the twins are older, I have slowly gotten back into travelling and I can’t wait to see some more cities.

I have a few cities I plan on seeing in the next couple of months. Some Spanish locations are high on my travel list and I am looking forward to ticking them all off as done. I am yet to visit any of the Spanish islands so they are definitely on my travel bucket list. One island I need to visit is Tenerife. It is the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands and I have heard amazing things about the Island. I have been looking online for Cheap Tenerife Holidays 2018/2019 and I have found some very good deals. Hoping to make that happen one day.

My Visit to Barcelona

Back to my visit to Barcelona many moons ago. We stayed at NH Hotel Cornellá for 3 nights. It was a lovely hotel with good customer service. I remember it was right in front of a Chinese restaurant that came in very handy.

The trip was fun. We visited a lot of tourist attractions – Barcelona Stadium, Seafood Market, Shopping malls and more. We hopped on the Red Bus Tour, which took us all over the city with running commentary. It was a lovely bus ride and we had a good time exploring the beautiful city and soaking in the culture. We even got on their own version of London Eye.

Why Holidays are Important

With our busy our lives are, holidays have become necessities. It is great to get out of the regular routine and do something elsewhere for a change. Holidays are important. They help us relax and unwind. Holidays also help us reconnect with loved ones. I enjoy going on vacations. If I could afford it, I would go somewhere special every month.

I have decided to do as much travel as I can this year and going forward. There are many cities/countries I am yet to visit to fully explore, and I really can’t wait to get on with it. I would love to see the world and appreciate all it has to offer.

Why Holidays are Important

I get to relax

Staying in hotels whenever I am on holiday is important to me. Even when I have a free place to stay with family/friends, I rather stay in a hotel. We work very hard on a good day, so when on holidays, we like to put my feet up and do nothing.

I don’t want to do anything while on holidays so the idea of room service, breakfast in bed, someone cleaning up after me (for a change) is right up my street. I would rather spend the money and unwind properly.

See the world

Going holiday means I get the opportunity to explore a different city. I want to see the world, and so far, I have seen quite a bit of it. I have visited Dubai, Oman, New York, Maryland, Paris, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Milan, Düsseldorf, Miami, Ireland and many more.

There are still a couple of countries on my travel list I need to see. I am slowly ticking them off one by one. The world is beauty and it would be a shame not to explore its beauty. I love every city I have seen for different reasons. Some are loved for their urban architecture, others for their party spirit, amazing food and great shops.

Create memories

I enjoy holidays because I get to create memories with my family. I take a lot of photos and make videos to keep these memories fresh in mind. Souvenirs are always bought as well. I never leave a city without a souvenir. It is my own way of taking something back home with me to remember the holiday.

Improve your health

Holidays help reduce our stress levels, which will in turn improve our health. Health is wealth, so taking time off to holiday is very important. Many of us are extremely busy juggling childcare, work, running a business and dealing with life in general. It can get so busy that all the hustle and bustle can begin to take a toll on your health. We need to remember to take things easy for the sake of our health.

Research has now shown that those who take less than one holiday every two years are more likely to suffer from depression and stress/burnout. It has also shown that those who fail to take annual holidays have a 21% higher risk of death from all causes and were 32 percent more likely to die of a heart attack.

I am not surprised by this results. I find that I laugh more while on holiday. Maybe it is the change of environment that amuses me or just a change of routine that makes me happy. Whatever it is, I like it. It keeps me in a good mood, even these Saturday quotes can’t put me in such a happy mood.

If all these does not make you book a holiday, I don’t know what will. I know many of us may struggle with going abroad on holiday, but you can holiday in your country or even in your city. There is a lot to see regardless of where you are based. You just need to find it.

It is also a good idea to schedule in some vacation time if you get the chance to go on a work trip or wedding abroad. Make the most of every new place you visit. Even if it means having an extra day or 2 set aside to be a tourist in the area, that will do you a whole lot of good. Whenever I go away for a wedding abroad, I make time to explore the city. I won’t want the only memory of my trip to be that of princess brides. That won’t be smart at all.

Why do you think holidays are important?

5 Ways to Travel Without Looking Like a Tourist

I love travelling and I had the opportunity to visit several counties. Whenever I am abroad, I like observing my surroundings and soaking in the culture.

Soaking in the culture as tourist is all good as long as you remember to play it safe. I usually do a lot of research before I visit any country. Thanks to websites like TripAdvisor and Expedia, it is so easy to find out all the information you need before you travel.

I like having fun on holidays but I don’t like standing out as tourist, because it tends to attract the bad apples. Here are some ways I travel without looking like a tourist.

Relax

This little trick may sound like a surprise to you but this helped me a lot. When you land in a new country or destination you’re likely to feel uncomfortable, restless or even overly excited. All that can give you away.

Someone who is familiar with the terrain hardly get over excited, restless or uncomfortable. They are usually relaxed and even indifferent to their surroundings.

I don’t advice you to feign indifference or you’ll miss out on all the beauty the country has to offer. I do, however, advice you to take a more relaxed approach as you soak in the best of your environment.

Blend with the locals

On one of my travels, I loved the way some of the tourists bought the cultural clothes of the country and wore them throughout the tour. It was their way of blending in with the locals.

When you make an attempt to blend in by showing your appreciation of their culture by wearing their local attire or eating with them or taking part in some of their cultural activities, you are likely to be more accepted in their fold and treated as one of them.

Why you need a holiday image

Take public transportation

Tourists usually take the bus tour and that makes everyone around them know that they are tourists. Aside from that, you miss out on seeing the country or destination for what it is.

If you have a good opportunity to hop on a train or bus while on holiday, grab it.

Take a route different

Every local knows the exact spots where tourists hang around. If you want to travel without looking like a tourist then you should avoid these places. Don’t follow the usual tourist routes. Be adventurous and see the places that are hardly visited by tourists.

Ease up on the photography

One of the characteristics of tourists is that they always have a camera in their hands ready or around their necks. There is nothing wrong with taking pictures. I make sure I take loads of pictures whenever I am on holiday. But if you don’t want to be look like a tourist then you need to ease up on the photography. Instead, enjoy the scenery and soak in the beauty of the environment.

Do you like looking like a tourist when you away on holiday or do you prefer blending in?
