Will UK Fashion Survive Brexit?

fashion-picture

The whole world held their breath as they waited for the results of the June 23, 2016 referendum. The outcome was a narrow win in favour of Britain leaving the EU with 52% against 48% of the total votes. This result brought a lot of concern to Britain, and the fashion industry was not left out of it.

The UK fashion industry has been a prime mover in the economy contributing £26billion in 2014 and £28billion in 2015. This industry was also responsible for employing nearly 900,000 workers for jobs spanning from manufacturing to retail.

Although the survey conducted by the British Fashion Council (BFC) states that 90% of the fashion designers planned to vote to remain in EU, the industry will now have to face what’s coming with Brexit.

But does UK fashion have the chance to survive Brexit? I believe there’s a good chance. Here are some of the reasons why I believe the UK fashion will survive Brexit –

  1. The devaluation of the Pound could lead to an increase in sales from foreign buyers

Since the final results of Brexit, the value of the pound took a nose dive. Although this caused a serious panic in the fashion industry, fashion designers saw an increase in the volume of their sales. The reason for this was that the drop in the value of the Pound made the fashion items in Britain appear cheaper to the buyers paying in Euro, Dollars, and other currencies. Thus, tourists in Britain found fashion items more affordable and this encouraged more of them to buy from the British market.

  1. Encouragement of growth in the fashion industry

As more foreign clients from different countries like France, Italy and Hong Kong among others, are buying more fashion items from Britain, there are signs of an increase in the growth of the fashion industry.  Some fashion designers are experiencing an increase in their businesses.

The price difference will definitely be a huge bonus for the British designers, since their price is comparatively more attractive than the prices in other European countries.

However, London will always be known as a fashion capital with talented designers. So even if there were an increase in the price of fashion items in Britain, this will not stop the fashion conscious from owning the latest trendy pieces.

  1. There’ll be a huge boom in online retail with a large foreign client base

With Brexit the common trend seems to be a shift to an increase in foreign patronage, so e-commerce stores that have a majority of clients from countries other than the UK will have a mega boost. Of course, price is the main determining factor in this case.

So will UK fashion survive Brexit? I’m pretty optimistic that the future of UK fashion is bright. And I predict a massive boom in the fashion industry.

Ruth Wilson Covers Marie Claire UK December 2016

The lovely Ruth Wilson covers Marie Claire UK December 2016 issue and I am loving it. It is a lovely cover. Ruth Wilson looks flawless on it.

I am a huge fan of this woman. I have followed her acting career since her Jane Eyre days. I loved her in Luther, and she literally blew my mind away with her character in The Affair. I can’t wait for the new season of the series to start. It is one of my current TV favourites.

This issue sounds like a fun read. The excerpts from her interview with Marie Claire makes me want to get out and buy it. I guess that was the effect they were hoping for. Here are some of them –

On wedding and a wedding dress –

I hate the thought of walking down the aisle in a white dress – I think it’s just a horrible idea. And I’m just not that excited by the idea of a wedding day, or of a ring on my finger’ she says, ‘I’m not even interested in jewellery.

On filming The Affair –

But arguably her most talked-about role to date is as Alison Bailey in The Affair, a role that has won her critical acclaim as well as a Golden Globe for Best Actress. Meeting writer Jane Mulkerrins for coffee in New York, Wilson said the sheer intensity of the show almost wiped her out. ‘The first season was relentless and draining. I’m not someone who can ever do something half-arsed, but at points, I did think, “Oh my god I can’t go any deeper.” I didn’t know if I could sustain it.’

Apart from the interview, the other features also sound very interesting. The new generation party looks feature sounds like a good style read. And I would like to read about the music industry dirty secret.

This issue has hit the newsstands. Will you be reading? What do you think of Ruth Wilson?

Suki Waterhouse Covers Glamour Magazine UK December 2016

I can’t believe we are actually talking about a December 2016 magazine cover right now. It feels like yesterday I published the first magazine cover for the year.

Anyway, the lovely Suki Waterhouse covers Glamour Magazine December 2016 cover, with a very interesting pose. I don’t know much about her but I find her outfit and striking pose very interesting.

In her interview with Glamour UK, Suki discusses her single life, modelling career, social media and her business ventures. Here are some quotes from her interview:

Her single life –

“I’m on Raya [a dating app popular with celebrities, aka The Illuminati Tinder]. Me and my sister [Immy, also a model and actress] are on it. We just talk to each other instead of potential dates. I know that in the future I want to be in a committed, loving relationship and have kids. Even though I’m happy being single, I spend a lot of time dreaming about being in love. But right now, I’m building… I’m doing all these things for me. I don’t know if I have the tools to be in a relationship right now.”

Social media –

“It’s all grossly inaccurate,” she said. “Everything that’s put on social media is distorted. All these steps that you take to show everyone on the internet that you’re perfect.”

I agree with social media being a distorted view of life, but I don’t see it as inaccurate though. I just see it as a tiny, well-arranged version of real life and events.

This issue sounds right up my street. Apart from Suki’s interview, the party style article also looks like a good read. I can see myself grabbing it very soon.

What are your thoughts on this Glamour issue? Do you agree with social media being grossly inaccurate or distorted?
