To Freelance is the Future

The number of freelancers is on the rise in different countries. And as I delve deeper into freelancing, the reasons for this increase are getting clearer by the day. In fact, the potential for freelancers is immense and I’m really glad that people, especially the creatives, are taking advantage of it. If you’re reading this, you’re probably a freelancer or you intend to freelance. Maybe you have even hired a couple to help you out in your business. You’ll see that they are proving themselves to be an indispensible part of the industry.

Here are some of the reasons why freelancing is the future of work.

Search for better income

This is where most freelancers start. The desire to find a way to augment their income pushes them to find “side hustles” they can engage in after their 9-to-5 jobs. The reason is simple: their salaries are not enough to cater for their needs or the needs of their family.

Those who turn to freelancing have been able to raise their income level even higher than what they were earning in their 9-to-5. Well known freelancers have been able to rake in millions every year through freelancing alone. That is something they could never have imagined they could achieve through their 9-to-5 jobs.

Freelancers take up gigs that reflect their passions

The gigs freelancers go for reflect their interests and hobbies. Doing something they love makes them enjoy the work they do. Thus, their side hustles turn to their passion project and a means to escape their dreadful jobs. This means that they are more productive and deliver quality services.  They carry this passion and enjoyment with them even after they leave their 9-to-5 to dedicate more time to build a business on what they love doing the most.

Freelance to experience a life of freedom

Freelancing gives people the opportunity to quit their jobs and start off as owners of their own businesses.  As business owners, these freelancers get to enjoy unlimited freedom in their lives. No need to wake up early to rush to work. Having to endure hours of long commute or crazy weather conditions would be a thing of the past. No need to deal with office politics. They are in charge of their own time, the clients they work with and how much money they can make.

Freelance gives job security

The immergence of artificial intelligence (AI) has been giving a lot of workers concerns. Many believe that the presence of AI means that they are faced with the threat of losing their jobs.

The good news is that freelancers are not at risk of the presence of AI. Freelancers don’t only offer services, they build business relationships and influence in their niche. This is something that AI can’t achieve.

Assurance of quality service

Most people working in offices today are doing those jobs mainly out of necessity and not many of them enjoy the work that they do. Freelancers on the other hand love their job. Their love for what they do shows in the quality of their work.

Their passion drives them to ensure that their clients are given the best. Freelancers work faster, smarter and are more resourceful and innovative than those working in a 9-to-5. They believe in ensuring maximum satisfaction and not merely living from paycheck to paycheck.

6 Reasons Why Self Employment is Good for Mothers

As a mother, we are faced with so many responsibilities. Managing the home, our family and still making time for self-care can be really difficult if you’re employed at a 9-to-5. I can imagine it being more of a struggle to work a 9-5 and run my family, than to be self-employed, running my own business from the comfort of my home, along with my family. There are so many reasons why self employment is good for mothers.

If you’re still wondering if it’s a good idea to transition into being self-employed, then here are 6 reasons that will convince you to get started.

Flexible hours

One of the first things you begin to experience when you’re self-employed is that you can work at any time of the day. You’re not restricted to work at 9am and close at 5pm. You can set the time that is most convenient for you. You can also reschedule, especially when you have to be at your child’s school or you’re feeling under the weather.

Self Employment & Flexible Location

You know those days at work, where it feels as if the cubicle is choking you to death? Well, if you’re self-employed you can work anywhere you want to. You can work from the comfort of your home or work on the beach. The location is up to you. When you feel like you need a change of environment, it’s just as easy as taking your laptop and going to the place of your choice.

You are in control of the income you want to make

Being self-employed gives you the opportunity to determine how much you want to earn. In a 9-to-5 you are restricted to a fixed salary and before you can get a raise, you should have worked long and hard to be eligible for a raise. When you own your own business, you are the one who determines how much you want to earn.  There’s literally no limit to what you can earn so long as you put in the work.

Less stress

The beauty of self employment is the amount of stress that you get to cut out of your life. You don’t have to deal with the pressure from co-workers or an angry boss. Worrying about commuting would be a thing of the past, if you work from home. You don’t have to worry about that late evening meeting and how to still make it to your child’s recital. Let’s face it: working at a 9-to-5 can be overwhelming at times. When you’re self-employed you’re in more control of your life and your work.

Gives you the sense of independence

When you work in a 9-to-5 you’re limited on all sides. Everything you do is focused on pleasing the company you work for. Whether you like it or not, there will be days when you’ll be asked to do things that you would ordinarily not like to do. Just because you don’t want to lose your job, you’ll find yourself succumbing to the whims of your boss.

But in your own business, you are your own boss and you have no one to please but yourself. You do what you like and the decisions you take in your business will not challenge your authentic self.

Quality Time

The most important people in your life are your dear ones. Being able to just be a part of their lives and get the opportunity to impact their lives daily is precious. But when you are neck-deep in work from the office (which can get extremely demanding) you miss out on what’s important. Being self-employed gives you the freedom to be with your family and be a part of their lives. Everyday spent with the one’s you love makes your life richer and more worthwhile.

Self employment is the coolest way to go, but it regardless of the freedom and beauty of being self employed, it is not the best option for everyone, and may not be the best option for you. This way of life comes with its own issues. It takes a lot of determination, passion and disclipline to make it work.

The Risky World of Freelance

Being your own boss is the way to go! Freelance is the dream! You get to determine how much you earn. Flexible working hours, give you the opportunity to spend time with your family and friends. You’re not limited to a cubicle. Instead you can carry your laptop and work anywhere – from a hotel lobby to your favourite café.

Before you transition into the freelance lifestyle, you’re going to have to have to take risks. Because, let’s face it, it’s a risk to leave the safety of the cubicle. It’s a risk to move into a career that is unfamiliar to society. No matter what anyone says, the life of a freelancer is worth it.

Here are some of the most common risks you will face as a freelancer and how you can embrace the risks and make the most out of your journey as a freelancer.

Taking responsibility for the progress of your business

A 9 to 5 runs pretty much on autopilot. Most times you’re not really concerned about whether the business is doing well or not, so long as you finish your assignments or projects and meet the deadlines. But as a freelancer, you are in charge of your business, and you are the one who determines the progress and vibe of your business. If your business is failing, you have no one to blame but yourself. This can be overwhelming as the pressure is always on to be and stay successful at what you do.

Don’t let this discourage you. See your freelancing business as an opportunity to dictate the flow of your business. Being in charge is the most empowering thing ever.

Your income is not going to be stable

Just like every business, you’re going to face some down time in your freelance career. Unlike a 9 to 5, freelancers don’t get a fixed salary. Their income is determined by the volume of projects they get to handle. But there will be days when you will make a lot of money and there will be days when you won’t make a penny. This makes budgeting really difficult as you can never know how much you’ll get at the end of the month.

Don’t let this discourage you. An unstable income is a great opportunity to push you to come up with creative ideas to increase the volume of work coming to your business. You can set up programmes, pitch to potential clients, go into coaching and create courses. These help open the doors to various streams of income.

Working from home will make you lazy

There’s a huge difference between working from home and working in an office. The office gives you the illusion of serious environment where everyone is engaged in one project or another. If you’re working from the comfort of your home, the tendency to lounge is high. There will be days when you won’t feel like working when you can probably sit on your couch and watch a movie.

Don’t let this discourage you. Working from home will teach you to be disciplined with your time and space. Having a special corner where you do all you work and defined working hours would help massively. Be open with your family members and let them know that your working hours and be sure to set your boundaries.
