Why Ugly Fashion is Big Business

It’s not new anymore. Ugly fashion is big business. Many designers have been creating absurd pieces and for some reason they gathered a lot of attention and interest.

For me, if a piece is not decent or wearable then I don’t go for it. But the truth is that the industry has been booming with the idea behind strange looking pieces. I’m more of a realistic fashion enthusiast. The fashion industry is thriving on such “ugly” items and I couldn’t help asking what is so special about such pieces that designers keep designing new variations of “ugly”.

Are you as curious as I am? Then here are some reasons I was able to discover why ugly fashion is big business.

They get social media attention

I know there have been times when I put on different outfits just to make sure that they work well for my outfit photos. That’s because I want to make sure that every photo is relatable and inspires people on great outfit combinations.

Just like me there are a lot people on social media who take their outfit photos seriously. It not only gives them recognition, it also gives something to talk about. And on social media, engagement is key.

What we term as ugly fashion is what actually creates great engagement. Ugly fashion is not just a fashion statement but something that is social media worthy. Anything that gets shares and comments works well all the time. If you don’t believe me, just ask Kanye West!

They are comfortable

Many consumers have confirmed that most of those ugly fashion items are comfortable and when it comes down to it, comfort is very important.

When I buy my clothes and shoes one of the things I look out for is comfort. I don’t know about you but I believe that being fashionable is not worth wearing uncomfortable clothing.

Many buyers search for comfort in any outfit they buy. They also understand the importance of staying comfortable. Imagine wearing something that keeps you self-conscious and uncomfortable for hours. You may look great but wearing anything uncomfortable is such a pain.

Since comfort is important to buyers, a good number of them would not mind if the outfit is ugly, because when you compare it with its “beautiful” alternative it wins hands down on comfort.

They are cheaper

It’s funny that ugly outfits are actually cheaper. Let’s face it, no matter how much money you have to spend on an outfit, the price tag still has an effect on your decision to buy that outfit. And yes, that’s where the compare game begins.

What we call ugly is actually more pocket friendly than the other finer clothing and it is totally logical for fashion lovers to go for what is affordable.

If ugly fashion items are social media worthy, comfortable and cheap, then that’s a real bargain to many shoppers. You will not only be considered as cool and an ardent follower of the latest trends, you’ll also be saving a lot of money. I guess, the secret behind ugly fashion has been revealed. Do you agree? Celebrity Engagement Ring Trends

The celebrities have definitely set an engagement ring trend for mere mortals like us to follow. When I got married, many years ago, things were very different from what they are today, especially in the engagement ring and proposal side of things.  There were usually no over the top public proposal, and proposals were fairly simple and very private. Social media was not big back then. There was no Instagram, so the pressure was non-existent unlike today.

The proposals are now over the top and the rings are getting more exotic. Who can remember Kanye West’s over the top proposal to Kim Kardashian in 2013? Kanye went all out with 50 piece orchestra and fireworks at San Francisco’s AT&T baseball park, and a 5 carat diamond ring by Lorraine Schwartz, estimated to be worth more than $1.6m. It was definitely the engagement of the year. Many of us still talk about it today.

Celebrity engagements have set the bar so high for engagement rings and proposals all over the world. I recently came across 77 Diamonds Celebrity Engagement Ring Trends Report for 2017 and I found the results very interesting. The report surveys 100 of the highest-profile celebrity proposals to discover their favourite engagement rings, diamond shapes, value, location and time of year to pop the question.

I found the survey very informing. I didn’t know half of the information on there, so it was a good read. The celebrities have changed almost everything in our world today, and when it comes to popping the question, they have stepped up the game completely.

Engagement Ring Trends

Here are some of the most interesting facts I found from the Celebrity Engagement Ring Trends survey.

Ring Design

According to the survey, various ring designs have been in demand from year to year. From 2013 to 2015, platinum was the engagement ring trend among celebrities. This changed to white gold in 2016, and then to yellow gold in 2017.

My engagement ring was yellow gold, and mine was a couple of years now, so I guess we saw the future engagement ring trend. However, If I was to get a new engagement ring today, I think I would go for a sparkly white gold ring or a platinum ring. I think I have fallen in love with white gold sort of engagement rings.

Still on the ring design, the oval cut diamond was popular with the celebrities in 2013 and 2014, but emerald has always been a celeb favourite.

Engagement Ring Carat and Value

The cost per carat for an engagement ring has changed a lot since 2014. The engagement ring value and carat are on an upward trend. The celebs are also spending much more on diamond quality than in previous years, which is good for all the parties involved. After all, diamonds are girl’s best friend.

Best Time to Pop the Question

According to the survey, most celebs got engaged in either the summer or festive season. I guess the amazing sunshine and festive cheer have a role to play in engagements.

What are your thoughts on these findings? Does any surprise you? Please share your views in the comments section below.

Kanye West’s Yeezy Clothing Line

I have never understood Kanye West’s Yeezy clothing line and this new season collection is no different. Personally I think Kanye should stick to rapping but it looks like he is more interested in the fashion designing world these days, so what do I know…

I just see the pieces as a bunch of ‘rags’ put together. They have no beauty or style whatsoever. I think Kanye West tries to hard to stand out with the entire focus being on the fashion shows being very weird different, that he loses focus on the collection itself. Or maybe he thinks his pieces are appealing but I beg to differ. I can’t imagine anyone in the ‘real world’ wearing anything from his collection, but maybe I am not just fashionable enough to see it. But then again, Kanye chatted with Vogue stating his clothing line isn’t really bout fashion (then what is it about Kanye?) –

“Let’s say ‘apparel,’ especially for the style of clothes I make,” he said. “I’m not saying that this is a fashion proposition, I’m saying that this is a human proposition.” The clothes are inspired by family, his home in Calabasas, California, and the desire to be out of the public eye sometimes. “Because there’s absolutely no way for me or my family to be invisible, I’ve put that longing for invisibility into the clothes.”

For this 4th fashion show, presented by Adidas with a performance by collaborator and artist Vanessa Beecroftit, it was all about getting on a bus to a secret location. The invited guests had no clue where the location of the fashion show would be until when they actually got there. The guests lucky enough to get an invite received it on the morning of the show. They were whisked off in a bus from a meeting spot to the fashion show venue – Roosevelt Island in New York.

The fashion show had models in underwear on a long lawn facing the Queensborough Bridge. They were in position for a bit under the scorching sun and a model apparently fainted, but that is beside the point. My issue with the whole Yeezy Clothing is the pieces are not practical or stylish, and definitely not worth the hype. He needs to stop with all these fashion stunts he pulls and focus on his designs and caring for his models too. But I guess he would still designing for a while until this all facade wears off, and he accepts the fact that he is a better rapper than he is a designer.
