How to Keep the Kids Safe in the Sun

Kids are the most vulnerable to the effects of the sun. They are prone to the sun and heat related illnesses. Sunny days are here and as parents it’s crucial that we protect our kids from the sun.

Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun can lead to illnesses like skin cancer and melanoma or even a horrible sun burn.  The risks of prolonged sun exposure to your kids can be drastically reduced when you take proper safety measures. Here are 4 you can get started with.

  1. Apply sunscreen frequently

On sunny days, it is very important that you carry a bottle of sunscreen with you at all times. Sunscreens provide protection from the harmful effects of the sun. It is advisable to go for a sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher with broad-spectrum protection.

Don’t just stop at applying sunscreen before your child goes outside. Make sure you apply sunscreen on your child’s body often at least every 2-3 hours. That way your child has all round protection.

Be generous with the sunscreen on the parts of your child’s body that is most exposed to the sun, like the back of the neck, arms, feet and even their lips as they can also be prone to sunburn.

  1. Limit their time in the sun

Damage from the sun is at its peak between 10am and 4 pm as that is the hottest time of the day. As much as possible, try to limit your kids’ outdoor time within the hours of 10am and 4 pm. Get creative with activities that your child can do indoors during those hours when the sun is at its hottest. If your child goes out during those times, make sure your child takes frequent breaks from the sun or plays in the shade. And, of course, don’t forget the sunscreen.

  1. Get them covered up

Another way you can keep your child safe from the sun aside from applying sunscreen is making sure they are covered up. Wide brimmed hats can help shield their face from the rays of the sun and sunglasses keep the sun from harming their eyes.

The kind of clothing you give them to wear is also important to ensure your child’s safety from the sun. Opt for fabrics that are thin, breathable and able to cover the areas of their body that get the most exposure to the sun.

  1. Be a good example

What better way to teach your kids the importance of staying safe in the sun than by setting a good example for them. Kids learn faster when they see someone showing the way. If you are consistent with applying sunscreen on your body, hanging out in the shade whenever you’re outside or wearing a hat and a pair of sunglasses, your kids will definitely follow your lead. Don’t skip the safety measures no matter what. Always remember that your little ones are watching and learning from you.

6 Commandments of Interior Design

As a freelancer I get to enjoy the comfort of my home more than those who have a 9-to-5 job. Consequently, it’s given me the opportunity to play around with interior décor. However, it wasn’t without mistakes and interior design mishaps. I learned the hard way.

6 Commandments of Interior Design image

If you’re like me and you’re very conscious of having a cozy home that makes you happy each time you walk in, it’s so much easier to decorate when you have some handy interior design rules up your sleeve. These rules are what I call the “Commandments of Interior Design”. Follow these rules and be assured that your home will look superb. You’d even be surprised it turned out so well.

  1. Thou shalt not spend so much

“I want to change the décor of my room but how much would it cost?”

When it comes to interior design especially if you want to DIY the whole thing, the price is the first concern that comes to mind. Oftentimes that’s the reason why some people shy away from giving their space a facelift.

Coming from experience, interior décor doesn’t have to cost so much. In fact, expert interior decorators advise that you should only spend a fraction of the value of your house. Little changes like sitting arrangements, decorative ornaments and pictures you can hang on the wall make a huge difference. Plus, there are great deals on furniture if you search hard enough.

  1. Thou shalt not overdo it

Who wouldn’t want to make a great impression when someone walks in your house? We would all like the perfect state-of-the-art interior décor, but you’ll lose the essence of what interior design is all about.

Just like fashion, interior design seeks to reflect the personality, values and style of the owner of the house or occupier of the flat. If you try too hard by overdoing the decor then your rooms will no longer reflect who you are. Sooner or later you’ll hate the thought of sleeping in your bedroom or lounging in the living room because they don’t mirror your style – it’ll feel like you’re out of place.

  1. Thou shalt focus on functionality

Have you ever been guilty of acquiring stuff you don’t even need just because it “looks nice”? If you’re not careful you could get carried away by the zeal of decorating your home that you overlook the functionality of the items you want to purchase.

Each time you want to buy something to decorate your house, ask yourself: What am I going to use this for? Will it be useful in my home? What function would its presence have in my home?

If after asking those questions you get nothing back, then you don’t need it.

  1. Thou shalt get more light

Light is an asset in interior design. Whether its natural light or artificial, a well-lit room gives your space the life it needs. The general mood of your home changes when you have great lighting.

Take a step back and see how much natural light is coming into the room. If your only source of natural light is a small window, add a mirror on the wall facing the window to reflect more light to other parts of the room.

For night time lighting, use a combination of light sources not only the lights in the ceiling. Include standing lamps and side table lamps as light sources as well. This is very important with staircases in particular. The more lightning the better as you want this part of your area bright and airy.

It may be necessary to look into staircase refurbishment with reputable companies if you are struggling to get the lightning you need.

  1. Thou shalt add some green plants

Aside from the fact that plants help provide your space with more oxygen, they work well as ornaments. They also add a lot of life and colour to the room.

One major concern people have when it comes to keeping plants in the house is maintaining them. Search for easy-to-take-care-of plants or schedule time to water and trim your plants.

  1. Thou shalt break the rules

Rules are meant to be broken. I mentioned earlier that interior décor has to reflect your personality. Sticking rigidly to the rules may do you more harm than good. Play around with alternatives. Switch up the rules a bit. What’s important is that you have fun and create a space that makes you happy.

What do you think of these commandments?

Caring for Plants this Spring

I am not perfect when it comes to caring for my garden or plants or any landscaping stuff, but I am getting better. Flowers are easy to care for. I always get flowers so I had to learn how to care for them years ago. But caring for plants was tricky for me. I remember learning a bit of what to do with plants in our Agriculture class in high school, but that was many moons ago. When I got plant pots from the kiddies for Mother’s Day, I had no clue what to do with them. So I had to learn on the job. Along the way, I picked up some plant care tips which some of you may find useful.

How to Care for your Plants this Spring

Try not to move your plants around

Plants take their time when it comes to acclimatizing to different surroundings. So try not to move them around, as they may not adapt quickly. Luckily for me, this was not an issue from the beginning. I found a great position on a window seal from day 1.

Avoid over watering

One of the major causes of early plant death is over watering. Plants growing in soil that is too wet will suffer from a lack of oxygen which leads to the death of roots. This is a major issue as many of us tend to over water our flowers and plants to keep them alive. There is no street watering routine to stick to. It all depends on the type of plant you have. I water my plants when they need watering. Which is when the soil is dry.

Keep the plants near a window

The plants need to be as near a window as possible. Placing them near a window means they can get all the light that they need. Plants need light and warmth to survive.

Don’t spill coffee or tea into the plants

Be careful not to spill any coffee or tea into the plant pot. as this will attract flies that will eat away your plants. The sugar in the drink would make it a perfect breeding ground for insects as well.

Go for an easy to care for plant

Now this is the best tip of all. If you a novice like me, go for the easy to care for plants. The plants that are low maintenance and require little attention. Plants like geraniums and sago palms. They are durable and very easy to care for.

Do you have any tried and tested tips to share when it comes to caring for plants this spring?
