With lockdowns in place all over the globe, millions of people are confined to their homes. Although these measures were introduced to protect everyone from a deadly virus, there are signs that lockdown is having a hugely detrimental effect on people’s health.

With outdoor exercise limited and gyms closed, many are finding it hard to maintain a healthy level of physical activity. People are spending more time in a sedentary state, watching TV and working from home and this is inevitably going to be harmful to people’s health. Recent evidence has shown that people’s eyesight is suffering from the increased screen time caused by lockdown too. But perhaps the greatest risk is to people’s mental health. As a species, we are not designed to be kept in a confined space, shut off from others, and worrying about the future. Gloomy news headlines and social media debates only make things worse, and it looks like little will change in the immediate future.

Therefore, it is of paramount importance that you do what you can to protect your health in this difficult time. Though you may be stuck at home, as long as you are proactive, you can keep an eye on your physical and mental wellbeing to stay as fit and healthy as possible. Here are four tips to help you.

Limit your technology use

When you’re stuck indoors with nothing to do, it’s easy to resort to watching TV and staring at your phone. Although you might be initially pleased by the prospect of finally catching up with your favorite series, too much time on devices is bad for you. Try to cut down the amount of time you spend online, and turn off your phone a couple of hours before bed to protect your sleep. It may be worth investing in some special glasses that block blue light. These blue blockers will help you sleep better at night and protect your mental health.

Make the most of your time outdoors

Despite lockdown, everyone is still entitled to time outdoors, whether for exercise or buying groceries. Even if you have no urgent need to leave the house, you should make the most of this freedom. Try to get outside every day, whether for a walk, run, or bike ride. As long as you are careful, there is no harm in it, and your mental health will benefit enormously.

Eat well

What you put into your body has a tremendous impact on your overall health. If you are continually buying greasy takeaways and eating junk food, you are doing great harm to your body. Buy fresh ingredients every time you go shopping, and learn to cook some delicious healthy meals.

Exercise indoors

As well as your allotted daily exercise, there is no limit to the amount of time you can spend working out at home. And the best bit is, you don’t need any equipment to get started. Just find a free online workout video and follow the instructions. You’ll be sweating in no time!

Staying sane in the midst of chaos

This year has been a rollercoaster for all of us. It has been up and down pretty much from January and the chaos is just getting louder and louder. Many people are struggling and I can literally feel the tension in the air. It is important to stay on top of our mental and physical health. This is not the time to bury our heads in the sand. Staying sane in the midst of chaos takes a lot of willpower and determination. You have to be ready to fight for your peace or else everyone else will drag you into their drama.

Here are some ways to help you stay sane in the midst of the madness going on –

Limit your time on social media

I have to spend some time on social media because of my job but these days, I limit the time I spend on the platforms. Social media is a huge drain right now, especially Twitter. There are all sorts of things going on at the same time all over the world. It is exhausting to be online nowadays.

Switch off the news

I don’t watch the news and haven’t done so for years. If you watch the news and you find that you are struggling, I would say you should take some days off and see how you feel. I usually pick up important info on social media and that is good enough for me.

Listen to soothing music

Music is like food to my soul. I am forever listening to my Spotify playlists. My current favourite tracks are Enya’s. I love her voice and style so much.

Workout

I start my day with a good 30-minute workout session. It prepares me for the day ahead and keeps me feeling great.  I would be lost without my workout sessions.

Do something for you every day

With everything going, it is super easy to put ourselves last and be busy worrying about everything and everyone. It is important to do something nice for yourself on a daily basis. It could be something as small as reading a book, watching a nice movie, going for a long walk, or as big as buying that new handbag you have had your eyes on for months now. The choice is yours. It doesn’t matter what it is, the important thing is that it is something that feels like a treat.

Taking care of your mental health during a pandemic

Our mental health can be very fragile on a regular day, so I can it imagine it being a lot more fragile during these uncertain times. There are so many things to worry about, it is almost impossible to vibrate high in the midst of the chaos and confusion going on. Taking care of your mental health during a pandemic can be tricky but it is doable.

Taking care of your mental health during a pandemic

Here are some ways you could go about making sure your mental health isn’t suffering.

Have some time to yourself

I think it is super important to have time for just yourself. That’s why I make sure I wake up at least a hour before everyone else gets up. That way I can have some quiet time just for myself. I get some more me-time later in the day. I am one of those people that thrive on alone time, so it is imperative I get everyday to feel ok. If you are like me, then you should stay on top of this and make sure you get time for just yourself even if it is just for an hour. That hour could save your mental health.

Eat and drink healthy

With this pandemic, it is important to have a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet. Eating and drinking healthy could save you from a whole lot of health problems, so make sure you are doing this right.

Get plenty rest

Getting good night sleep and plenty of rest during the day is very important. The last thing your body and mind needs now is stress. I know it is hard to not be stressed with all what is currently happening, but it is best to stay away from stress as much as possible and get plenty of rest to keep your energy levels up.

Have a routine

Having a routine does help especially if you have young kids. I find it easier to do all I do when I have a clear routine. It is flexible but I know what I need to do every few hours and that keeps all of us focused.

Meditate

Meditation may not be for everyone but it has really kept me going. I mediate numerous times a day. My meditation sessions relax me and keep me vibrating high, which helps me stay on top of my mental health.

Exercise

I am very active and the kiddies are active as well, so we are always on the move. We still go for short daily walks and that helps. The fresh air and exercise does wonders. We also watch fitness videos on Youtube and they get us moving at home as well.

Social media and News

You don’t need to listen to News over and over again, especially if they get you anxious and fearful. I don’t listen to the news. I read up the bits I need online and I watch short clips when necessary. I have never been a fan of the Press (which is funny since I have a blog), but I know I have to stay updated with what is going on in the world, so I watch and read what I need.

Talk about it

Tell someone how you feel about the pandemic going on. Talking is therapy and I can guarantee you will start to feel better once you tell someone how you really feel. Talking makes the pandemic not so scary.

Every storm runs out of rain, so I know this too shall pass. Remember to wash your hands, obey the social distancing advice and stay safe. Have a great weekend.
