My Ancestry DNA Test with Living DNA

I recently got the opportunity to have an ancestry DNA test done with Living DNA and I jumped at the chance. If you read my last post about me wanting to have an ancestry DNA test done, you will know how eager I was to get this test done. It has been on mind for years now, so I was very happy when I got the chance to do this.

For those who have never heard of this test before, it is a 3 in 1 DNA ancestry test like no other by Living DNA. The results of the test will tell you who you are and where you come from. It answers questions you may have surrounding your family ancestry and shows your full history.

The Process

Once I got the Living DNA sampling kit, I got it activated on the website and then I followed the instructions on the kit. I took a cheek swab and had the pack sent back. Within 36 hours, I got an email confirming they have received my kit and were working on my swab. Within 3 weeks, I got an email informing me that my results were now ready and I could view it in my online account. I wasn’t prepared for what I read.

The results cover 3 aspects of DNA – Family Ancestry (Autosomal DNA), Motherline Ancestry (mtDNA) and Fatherline Ancestry (Y-DNA, males only).

 

Family Ancestry (Autosomal DNA)

This part of the test looks at my ancestors in recent times (about 10 generations ago). The 90.7% African ancestry was expected but I thought the figure would be a lot higher. I didn’t expect to see the 7.6 European and 1.7 Near East. That was a shock. The 7.6 European part (France) is mainly from my father’s side from the looks of it. While the 1.7 Near East (Turkey) is mainly from my mother’s side according to the Motherline Coverage Map.

This part of the test looks at my direct maternal ancestry. It was interesting to read about my Motherline. I found the Motherline Coverage Map (mtDNA) very informative. It was good to see all the regions where we share a common ancient ancestor.

The highest on the Map were Chad, Kenya and Mozambique with 38%. I thought Nigeria would be at the top but it was down in the middle at 18%. Portugal, Syria and Equitorial Guinea were at the bottom of the Map at 1% each. The information on the map has definitely given me food for thought.

 

We are all connected

It is interesting to see how we humans are all connected. These results have definitely given me something to think about and I can see myself doing some more digging. It has answered many of my questions surrounding my genetic ancestry and I am happy I got the opportunity to do it.

Fashion for Outdoor Events

Spring is here and it will be summer before we say BOOM! Summer is all about barbecues, picnics and loads of outdoor events/activities. It is usually a busy time of the year and I really can’t wait for all the fun the season brings.

When it comes to dressing for outdoor events, we have to pay special attention to our clothing and accessories to ensure they are fit for purpose. Fashion for the outdoors is all about wearing the right outfit for the event. Being outdoors for an entire event can be hard, depending on the weather and whether you like being outdoors or not.

Here are some fashion and style tips you may find handy –

 

If in doubt wear jeans

Jeans are great for outdoor events. You can easily catch me wearing a pair of jeans. They are practical, stylish and very functional. Jeans are great for picnics, summer barbecues and parties, You can hide grass and food stains easily on a pair of jeans. They are also very easy to glam up. You can style it with a glittery or over the top blouse for a more stylish look.

Layer like a pro

If you are going to be spending hours outdoors, it is best to dress up in layers, so you can put on and take off as needed. Styling your outfit with a light jacket or wrap cardigan on a summery day would work great. You could also go for a look with a camisole underneath. This helps for when it starts off being very warm in the day but becomes chilly in the evening.

 

Go for comfy clothing

When it comes to outdoor events, I like to think of comfort after layering. Comfort is very important if I plan to have a great time. I like to wear comfy pieces like light jeans, cotton tops, dark linen trousers, wide knee-length skirts and the likes.

 

Remember the accessories

For a summer day, I am always with a hat and a pair of sunglasses to protect my eyes. I can’t imagine attending an outdoor event without them.

Go elegant to the Races

If going to the races is on your agenda this summer, make sure you have your elegant outfit ready. It is all about the glamourous dress paired with stunning heels, and hat/fascinator. Ensure you dress to look the part.

 

Style your footwear smart

Ensure you wear the right sort of shoes and make sure you can work in them. I remember wearing a lovely strappy sandals to a summer wedding a few years ago. It was done outdoors and I struggled to walk on the grass. My heels kept digging into the muddy grass. It was a horrible experience. You don’t want to find that you are struggling to walk in your shoes on the day. A way to get around this is to wear comfy shoes for the location of the event. A more structured heel or wedge would have been ideal for me. Also, it makes sense to have a pair of flats in your bag for when your feet need it.

 

 

 

 

Product Review – RMK Basic Colour Control

Happy International Women’s Day to all my amazing women. Today is a day to celebrate women and everything feminine. So I decided to review some lovely makeup products I got the other day. RMK got in touch and offered to send me some makeup/beauty products to review and I was super excited to get my hands on them. I am a huge fan of Japanese products. There are definitely at the top in the beauty industry and RMK ticks all the boxes when it comes to quality makeup.

A bit about RMK

For those who have never heard of this brand before, RMK is a cosmetics line that holds firm roots within the New York make-up artistry scene and is carefully brought to life in dedicated laboratories in Japan. I was lucky enough to get RMK Basic Control Colour in Silver (01), and the Colour Crayon in Red (04) and Fig (06).

This Basic Control Colour by RMK enhances the skin’s natural beauty. It comes in 4 shades – Silver, Coral, Purple and Green. I got my hands on the Silver and it is meant to enhance the skin’s natural luminosity for a brighter complexion.

PROS
  1. I love the compact packaging.
  2. The creamy gel  texture of this product is great for my skin. It is easily absorbed and I definitely brightens it up.
  3. It masks all the problem areas on my face.
  4. You can use this product as a primer. It works great as a base for makeup. The makeup just glides on effortlessly and stays put.
  5. It moisturises my skin perfectly.

 

CONS

None.

I can’t fault this product at all. It is a great makeup product and I will be using it a lot. You can grab it for £28 at Selfridges, Look Fantastic and Beauty Bay.

 

 

RMK Colour Crayon in Red and Fig

RMK Colour Crayon comes in 6 shades – Red, Pink , Fig, Rose, Coral and Beige. I got my hands on the Red and Fig shade. The Red shade is the classic look while the Fig shade is more of a dark red look.

If you know me well enough, you would know how much I love a red hippie. The shade of red is so beautiful.

PROS
  1. Both shades suit me. I love the way they look on my lips.
  2. I found both Lip Crayons easy to apply and blend.
  3. The compact packaging is great. I like the twist-up retractable style.
  4. A little goes a long way. I just needed to apply a bit to get the intensity I wanted.

 

CONS

None.

 

I can’t fault these RMK Lip Crayons. They are so amazing and I can already see myself using them regularly. You can grab the shades and the others for £19 each at Selfridges, Look Fantastic and Beauty Bay.
